Smooth curves of landscape: a wind-blown tree standing at the base of a gentle rolling hill, Machrie Moor.

Standing in front of a display exhibit are two members of Rolling Thunder, which remembers our MIA's and POW's. They visited the library with their dogs, Cavan and Freedom, to promote Rolling Thunder and the work they do.
St Nicholas, Castle Hedingham, Essex
Sible Hedingham and Castle Hedingham are two large villages which merge into each other across the infant River Colne in the rolling hills of north Essex. The Hedinghams are quite different in character. Sible Hedingham, much the larger, is a working village of housing estates and small factories on the old Cambridge to Colchester road, whilst Castle Hedingham, with its castle, tea shops and pargetted houses, is a pretty tourist trap village. Both parish churches are big, Castle Hedingham's much the grander, one of the finest Norman moments in the county.
My Harrall ancestors farmed in Sible Hedingham, but they were not baptised in Sible Hedingham church, nor did they worship there. Instead, they walked the short distance into Castle Hedingham and the Congregation of Protestant Dissenters at the chapel there, today a United Reformed church in the shadow of the great parish church. Many of them were buried in the little chapel graveyard, although none of their headstones survive, if there ever were any.
Before the end of the 18th Century my great-great-great-great-grandfather Daniel Harrall took his small amount of capital and bought a farm on the Hoo peninsula in Kent. At the time of the 1851 census, in his seventies, Daniel would gave his birthplace as Civiledingham, a reminder that Sible Hedingham is a corruption of Civil Hedingham, the place the people lived as opposed to its rather posh neighbour across the river. Daniel's granddaughter Mary Ann Harrall was my grandfather's grandmother. She knew Charles Dickens when she was a child.
Shake it, throw it, watch it rolling. In this photo, a dice was captured while rolling after being thrown. To show this movement, one dice was placed and focused, and another dice was thrown over it to get the effect of motion.

I snooped around the Rolling Hills Estates Farmer's Market this morning. The items on the plates are what I brought home. :-)
