Something for the weekend, Sir? Rolling Stones, ‘Exile on Main St.’ from 1972. Their previous album, ‘Sticky Fingers’, is pretty good but, as we’ve all got enforced isolation upon us, I went with this sprawling double album slob of a monster.
Most of this album was recorded in the South of France, near Nice, as the Stones had become tax exiles. Top rate of UK tax was at 90% in those days. Imagine that. Mick was doing a Business degree at the LSE before becoming a full time Stone, so he understood the figures. Keef? Well, he was smacked out of his mind and rented a villa that had been a Gestapo headquarters in France for the duration. The whole album sounds and feels dirty and sordid and damaged and disturbed and raw and funky and a million miles from their Sixties pop hits. And it’s all the better for it.
Over four sides, the band create a sloppy, loose stew of blues, rock, soul and country. Recordings were made in the basement of the villa at night, with condensation running down the walls. Sonically, it is a murky, blurry, analogue soup, like a late-night honky-tonk-bar lock in. For me, and others, this is the Stones masterpiece: the ‘real’ Stones, the peak summation of everything they’d learned and lived.
‘Tumbling Dice’ and ‘Happy’ are the hits you hear on the radio, but buried in the grooves are deeper, slinkier, sexier, darker vibrations. They actually sound like the old Bluesmen they’d been copying for years. Slow blues chug, fast rockers, Country balladry, sanctified Soul. It sounds ancient and modern. Mick’s lyrics, when you can make them out, are top notch: jaded, faded, weary… “the sunshine bores the daylights out of me”, indeed.
Too many songs to list here really, but the whole thing is a feast. The original album cover is a joy too, with photos by Robert Frank to stare at. The weird, underworld, deviant America. You know, the fun stuff. If you only know the Stones from their ‘greatest hits’ then give this a spin. It’ll rock ya...
300zx Vlsd with hicas 240sx output shafts and stock 240sx axles. it would have been easier to use a hicas 240sx Vlsd, but i couldn't find one at the time. another option would have been to use j30 vlsd and axles.

Look carefully and you can see the wire ties still running down the keel. This is the point where they can be removed. Most of them came out fairly easily, but some were really stuck with the epoxy. On those, I held a soldering gun against them for about a minute and the heat forced the epoxy to release.
Driving to the car park ended up being a snap: no wrong turns, no getting lost! We arrived on schedule at 3pm and met up with our car rental guy just as we were entering the medina. Shortly thereafter, we met with our riad host Hicham who led us to the Dar El Menia.
Lake County is one of the few places in Florida, that is not flat! Nice sweeping rolling hills through parts of the county gives it often times a bit of the feeling of more northern states.
West Point Garrison Commander, Col. Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
