Rolling Stones, ‘No Stone Unturned’, 1973. Stone, unturned: see what they did there? Some called it barrel scrapping back then. Decca owned all the Stones catalogue up until ‘Sticky Fingers’ released on the band’s own label in 1971. Peeved at losing their cash cow, Decca released various compilations with the material they owned, usually without the band’s approval. By 1973 this compilation was the seventh Stones compilation released in less than 3 years. Milk it. Moo!

This compilation is mainly B sides and, as such, probably not that familiar to the casual radio-friendly Stones listener. Therein lies its strength. It’s hard to fathom today that the Stones were part of the Revolution. What they, and all those other Sixties bands, were doing back then was once new, different, edgy, hated by parents. So, these deep cuts offer a different slant on the boys to the modern Stones Inc travesty. Plus, it’s the Brian Jones-era band: no Brian, no Stones.

‘Poison Ivy’ kicks it off. Standard Stones cover of a well-known tune. ‘The Singer Not the Song’ was the B-side to ‘Get Off my Cloud’ 1965. It’s mid Sixties pop with acoustic jangly guitars and blues country vibe, just slightly out of tune. ‘Surprise, Surprise’ 1965 sounds like a Soul cover but it’s an original, with solid Charlie drums and nifty electric pickin’. Mick channelling his Blues Delta roots, ahem. ‘Child of the Moon’ 1968 is a great strummy riff with keyboard, great harmonies, woozy and psychedelic folk tinged. A hidden gem. ‘Stoned’ from 1963(!) is a lurching, stomping, drunk piano, rockin’ instrumental with blistering lead licks and echo-laden Mick announcing he’s stoned. The band sound it. Party tune. ‘Sad Day’ 1966 has a rumbling bass, pretty acoustic guitar, piano, solid snare snap, and a pumping 12 bar break. ‘Money’ 1964 is bluesier than the Beatles’ version, harder with upfront bass and blowing harp. ‘Congratulations’ 1964 is Country flavoured with Sixties pop vibe. ‘I’m Moving On’ is a live cut from 1965 with slide guitar from Brian, distorted bass, harmonica peals, fan screams: not pretty, but tight and captures the excitement. ‘2120 South Michigan Avenue’ is a tight R&B instrumental, recorded at Chess Records in 1964. Hammond organ, echo laden harp, booming bass, crisp guitar chops. The band were thrilled to be recording where heroes Chuck, Bo, Muddy et al recorded. It’s a slinky groove. Sunglasses after dark. ‘Long, Long While’ 1966 is another Soul influenced slow number with keyboard swirl and lazy guitar. ‘Who's Driving Your Plane?’ 1966 is sloppy 12 bar blues boogie with drunk piano and demented energy. Blitzed fun.

A mixed bag then but refreshing to hear stuff that doesn’t usually get an airing. Great cover too, photos by Davis Bailey of that '60s parish...

Rolling Stones, ‘Miss You’, 1978. The last time the Groaning Bones did anything vaguely interesting. The album ‘Some Girls’ had some punk energy to it and the band actually sounded like they cared. In amongst the riffs was this disco-fied curio which became a big hit. Probably the weirdest hit they ever had. It still has a funky swing to it. Turn that bass up, y’all!

a little bit of an extreme edit for me. buddy took this test shot while trying to figure out shutter speeds for rolling shots. poor lighting and prep and I though shot would be a good opportunity to go crazy with edits

Technically this picture isn't that really good, but the otter himself was really cute, I had to show that!
