The mill was renovated and is home to local historical society and museum. The structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places
The Malvern Roller Mill is a country grist mill located in Whiteside County, Illinois along Old Clover Road. The mill building sits about 300 feet from the present-day roadway, Felton Road, which was rerouted in 1992. The mill is near the small Whiteside County community of Malvern, about nine miles northeast of Morrison, Illinois. The mill building sits on the south bank of Rock Creek, and to its northeast is a stone faced dam. The dam stretches the 80 to 90 feet across the Rock Creek. The 1858 mill building is of studded wall construction. The rectangular shaped building is 26 feet by 38 feet. To the west of the mill building is a circa 1890 Pratt truss bridge. The Christian Mens Fellowship group from the First Christian Church of Sterling toured this building on September 12, 2010

Everybody cut footloose...
I don't think this building has been painted since that movie filmed here.
John Murray built the mill in 1913, replacing another mill that was built in 1883. Three generations of the Murray family operated the mill until operations ceased in 1967. The mill sat idle until the county Historical Association purchased it in 1980. The mill was restored to working order in 1985. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The mill dam is an arch-gravity dam. An arch-gravity dam has the characteristics of both an arch dam and a gravity dam. The dam that curves upstream in a narrowing curve that directs most of the water to the sides, providing the force to compress the dam. It also uses the weight of the dam itself to hold the water back. It combines the strengths of two common dam forms and is considered a compromise between the two. A famous example is the Hoover Dam.
The owner explains that the two large water turbines (20 & 50 HP) are located under this raised protion of floor. when the water gates on the sluice were opened the water would rush through the turbines causing them to turn. According to accounts from Julia (Appel) Ridge, the daughter of John Appel, when the mill was running the whole building would shake and tremble with all the machines running.
Notice the double ended hook behind the owner used to lift the original grind stones, these stones were later replaced by the Rolling Machines. The stones are now part of a walkway outside (see other photos)

A row of belt-driven roller mills was at the heart of the operation. An interesting article on flour milling in America: www.angelfire.com/folk/molinologist/america.html
The Malvern Roller Mill, also known as Appel Mill and Malvern Milling Company is located near the unincorporated village of Malvern, Illinois, in rural Whiteside County, north of Morrison, Illinois. The original mill on the site, built by 1853, was destroyed by a flood and the present mill was erected in 1858. The mill's first owner was William P. Hiddelson who operated the mill until he sold to Benjamin Hough in 1871. The mill changed hands over the years until it landed under the control of George Appel in 1892. The Appel family closed the mill in 1942 but it remained in their family until 1985. It is the only known mill in northwestern Illinois that retains all of its original equipment for an all roller and no grindstone process.

Atlas Steel Frame Scale, U.S. Standard. Mounted in the floor the scale was large enough to weigh a wagon. notice the old singer sewing machine used to sew up the tops of grain sacks. The salt lick still sits at the foot of the scale, a testament to the fact that everything has been preserved, just as it was, upon closing in the 1940's.
