7DWF, Sundays: Fauna (yes, there's a horse!)
Sliders Sunday
For the time being my last one from my Good Friday visit to the Charlottenburg Palace. A heavy slide for Sunday, and an alibi horse for 7DWF's Fauna ;-). I did so much here that I don't even recall each step. At first I only wanted to bring out the details, enhance the clarity, increase the saturation a little, remove the noise from the sky. Then started to play around with those new LR presets, and all of a sudden the sky went from "normal" blue to turquoise. Still tweaked it a little here or there, and all of a sudden there was this vignette in the upper corners. Well. This was some sort of "processing by accident" ;-).
The equestrian statue was created between 1696 and 1703. The rider is Frederick William I. (1620-1688), Great Elector of Brandenburg (not to be mistaken for Frederick William I. of Prussia, the "Soldier King"). The name of the horse has, unfortunately, not been delivered to posterity. The Charlottenburg Palace itself was mainly built between 1695 and 1712. I don't want to bore you with more details, as it's Sunday. Please check Wikipedia, if interested, where you can find everything about the Palace in many languages: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlottenburg_Palace
Wishing you Happy Fauna, HSS and a beautiful Sunday, dear Flickr friends!

#Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek was founded by the brewer Carl Jacobsen, a man who had a vivid interest in contemporary Danish and French art - and ancient art too. He had a great collection which he, and his wife Ottilia donated to the public, in two deeds in 1888 and 1889. The collection seen today still reflects these intentions.
The museum contains over 10 000 objects of art - ancient and somewhat more modern.
The museum today consists of four buildings - the oldest being the Dahlerup building, named after its architect Vilhelm Dahlerup, who was the master behind what is still the main entrance to the museum. His complex was symmetrical with three wings, around an open court-yard. He was very influenced by earlier eras, and for example the façade is in a style which should be called Italian Renaissance - though 400 years too late. His interior was in turn influenced by both roccoco, and the Imperial Rome. This was inaugurated in 1897.
The second building was made by Hack Kampmann, and fittingly called the Kampmann building. Kampmann was a classicist, and his creation differed greatly from the other. But the second building was built to fit with the already existing one, forming a closed courtyard in the middle, which was covered with glass and would form one of the most famous sights of the place, the Winter Garden. This was opened to the public in 1906.
In 1996 the latest addition to the museum was opened to the public, the Henning Larsens building, by the architect of the same name.

Palazzo Biscari is a private palace in Catania, Sicily, southern Italy.
It was built by will of the Paternò Castello family, the princes of Biscari, starting from the late 17th century, lasting for much of the following century, after the devastations of the 11 January 1693 earthquake. The new palace was built directly against the city walls (Charles V's walls), which had partially withstood the earthquake. The oldest section was built under Ignazio, third prince of Biscari, who entrusted the project to architect Alonzo Di Benedetto. Ignazio's son, Vincenzo, commissioned the decoration of the seven large windows facing the seaside, by the Messinese sculptor Antonino Amato. Later the palace was modified under the fourth Prince, Ignazio Paternò Castello, who had it enlarged eastwards under design by Giuseppe Palazzotto and, later, by Francesco Battaglia. The building was finished in 1763 and inaugurated with big celebrations. The palace is accessed through a large portal facing via Museo Biscari, leading to the inner courtyard, which features a large double staircase. In the interior is the "Feasts Hall", in Roccoco style, with a complex decoration of mirrors, stuccoes and frescoes painted by Matteo Desiderato and Sebastiano Lo Monaco. The small dome, destined to the orchestra, has a frescoe depicting the glories of the Paternò Castello di Biscari family. It is accessed through a staircase decorated in stucco within the gallery facing the sea.Among the other rooms are the "Fief Room", featuring large canvasses of the Biscari feudataries; the "Princess Apartments", built by Ignazio V of Biscari for his wife, with pavements of ancient Roman marbles; the "Birds Gallery" and the "Don Quixote Room". There is also a museum, once housing the collection of Ignazio V, most of the material of which is now in the Castello Ursino in Catania.

In 1551 two Augustinian Friars from Salamanca, Spain arrived on these shores. Soon there were monastic buildings on this site and a first church (1554) was designed by Esteban de Amaya and the carpenter Cristóbal López. Many changes - often due to earthquake damage - were made down through time resulting in the present-day church in an amazing churrigueresque and roccoco style. Since 1585 it was named a parish church dedicated to Marcellus of Tangier (c.250-298), a Roman centurion martyr-saint.
So much to see here. I wandered around amazed at the glittering gold and opulence. Looking at the baptistery screen I noticed a silhouette. First I thought it might be a map presentation to illustrate the spread of christendom. Looking more closely I realised my mistake. That silhouette (see inset), fittingly for its location, shows the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. And perhaps my first view wasn't as wrong as I thought. I think there's also a kind of map: left bottom Spain, then above that France and Eurasia, on the right of Jesus Africa and far right Madagascar...?
PS Usually silhouettes are black against a light background; this one is golden against dark.

They're moving towards you with their colors all the same"
Brinkley Capriola snapped the silhouette, I took the haze

The Major cloister - Certosa di San Martino Naples
In 1325 on the top of the hill of Sant'Erasmo, Carlo d'Angiò, Duke of Calabria, the firstborn of Roberto d'Angiò, had the monastery of the Carthusian order erected, the favorite of the French royal house.
The Sienese architect and sculptor Tino di Camaino, already famous for the Cathedral of Pisa, and master builder of the Angevin court was called for the construction of the Certosa di San Martino.
The current aspect of the Certosa is due to the work of three architects: Giovanni Antonio Dosio (1581) who softened the rigid Gothic image giving it an elegant Renaissance style, Cosimo Fanzago (1623) who created the precious baroque vestment and Nicola Tagliacozzi (1723) who succeeded to summarize in his work the architecture, the painting and the distinctive sculpture of the Rococo taste. Over time very renowned artists worked for the Carthusian monks: among the painters there were Ribera, Battistello Caracciolo, Lanfranco, Luca Giordano, among the sculptors instead, Giuseppe Sanmartino and Domenico Vaccaro.

The Liepaja Holy Trinity Cathedral features the world’s largest mechanical organ which has never been reconstructed, but from atop the church’s 55-meter high tower the panorama of Liepaja can be seen.
The cathedral was constructed between 1742 and 1758 in the Baroque-style with Classicism features. The cathedral’s dominating feature remains its Baroque-style decorative brilliance and charm, including light and shadow contrasts. The cathedral interior is characterized by its Roccoco features and luxurious furnishings with wood carvings and gold plating. The Trinity Cathedral once housed the congregation of the local German Lutheran community. The Duke or Courland’s private box stands to this day on the second floor of the church.
