This robust-looking seabird breeds around the coasts of Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and the south-west and north-east of England, but may be encountered more widely around our shores outside of the breeding season.
Bempton Cliffs, East Yorkshire
Compact, robust, and big-headed warbler. Males are striking with a black hood contrasting with whitish throat, gray back, and red eyering. Females duller with a gray hood, white throat, and buff body. Common in many typical Mediterranean habitats including tall bushes, open woodland, gardens, coast, and plantations. Usually first detected by its song, a fast, angry-sounding rattling "ctret-tret-tret-tret-tret" or "tetwtweer-tik-tik-tik" with whispering in between. The call is a dry "tseck."

The Vosgienne is a French bovine breed of medium size robust and well adapted to the mountain, found mainly in the Vosges mountains.
Length: 35mm
A robust looking damselfly with a dark greyish abdomen and a blue "tail" in the male. The eyes of the male are deep red and the thorax in both sexes is bronze black on top. The female has short, yellowish ante-humeral lines.
Found in lakes, gravel pits, canals and slow-flowing rivers. The males often sit on water lily leaves defending their leaf from allcomers.
The similar, but smaller, Small Red-eyed Damselfly is sometimes found in the same habitat and careful observation is needed to distinguish the two species. Could be confused with the Blue-tailed Damselflies Ischnura elegans and I. pumilio, but these are smaller less robust looking insects and do not have red eyes.

Königsberger Huhn
Das Königsberger Huhn ist ein robustes, graublaues Legehuhn (keine anerkannte Rasse, sondern eine Gebrauchskreuzung bzw. ein Hybridhuhn). Es ist bei Garten- und Hobbyhaltern sehr beliebt, weil es ruhig, zutraulich und sehr eifrig beim Eierlegen ist.

A robust, squirrel-like rodent found in alpine grasslands throughout the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau. Adults typically weigh between 4 and 9.2 kg, with a body length of 45–67 cm and a tail measuring 12–15 cm. They have thick fur and adaptations that help them endure cold, high-altitude environments.
These are very social animals living in colonies and we sighted them in good numbers on the side of mountain roads during our trip. They were playing with each other, seemingly hugging at time and foraging together. Their burrowing behavior not only provides shelter but also supports communal hibernation for six to eight months each year. These marmots feed primarily on grasses and flowering alpine plants. Marmots in the wild have an average lifespan of about 15 years.
The species plays a key ecological role in alpine meadows, supporting predators such as snow leopards, wolves, and large raptors.
Deeply romantic yet squat and robust, Wells Cathedral, the Cathedral of St Andrew the Apostle, is mostly in Early English style. Construction was started in 1175 by Bishop Reginald FitzJocelyn on the site of a Saxon abbey built by St Aldhelm in 705; it replaced Sherborne as the seat of an episcopal see in 909, and it was removed again to Bath after the Norman Conquest in 1090. The new building begun by FitzJocelyn was intended from its inception to facilitate a return of the episcopal seat to Wells. The bulk of the work was finished by 1326.
The magnificent West Front, with 300 sculpted figures, followed in the years after 1365 under master mason William Wynford.
The Cathedral fell into disrepair under Oliver Cromwell, and after a happy interlude during the Restoration was again damaged by Puritan soldiers during the Monmouth Rebellion, who damaged the West Front and stabled their horses in the nave.
Wells Cathedral is the seat of the Bishops of Bath and Wells.

The sun had already disappeared when Carolina spotted this incredible scene while driving through the Apalachicola National Forest. We quickly turned around and I took my tripod down to the water's edge to take advantage of the rapidly vanishing ambient light. I was hoping for a different composition, however as soon as I eased into the water I realized that it became very deep very fast, and the bottom consisted of loose mud that quickly swallowed my leg up to my knee.
Luckily I was able to find this nice clump of plants close to the shore, and set about capturing a few frames, which I later manually focus stacked. After finishing up, Caro and I enjoyed watching a number of bats exit an adjacent culvert and fly just above the waters surface in pursuit of the swarm of mosquitoes and other insects emerging for the evening.

One of the weirder sights in Loch Eck is this little tree managing to survive and prosper in the middle of the loch. Nature can be such a robust thing!

Wingspan range between 60-65 inches to give you an idea how big this gull is. Described as pugnacious, predatory, and omnivorous. I've seen one snacking on some coconut meat. That's the species secret to survive robustly I guess.

D’une longueur d’environ 14 cm pour un poids de 16 à 20 g, l'espèce présente un dimorphisme sexuel marqué au niveau de la calotte.
Le mâle arbore une calotte noir brillant, contrastant avec le gris clair de la tête et du cou. Ses parties inférieures sont gris clair, avec des reflets argentés sur la gorge et la poitrine.
La femelle et les juvéniles se distinguent, quant à eux, par une calotte roux châtain, un plumage plus brun-olive sur la face dorsale et gris-beige sur la face ventrale.
Majoritairement migratrice, cette fauvette est pourtant de plus en plus observée en hivernage dans nos régions, témoignant des évolutions climatiques actuelles.

Yesterday morning we came upon this large dead squid that had washed up. You just never know what you might find when you walk the beach!
After some online searching, I think this may be a so-called robust clubhook squid, which is one of the larger squids and a relatively rare find on the beach.
There is really no way I would ever encounter such an animal where it lives, and so I must be satisfied with the mystery and the excitement of finding its remains unexpectedly.
It does something to you to find a creature you cannot identify and have never seen before. It's like for a moment you lock eyes with Life itself.
La cardencha (Dipsacus fullonum [= D.sylvestris]) es una hierba magnífica, robusta, bienal –es decir, que florece, fructifica y se seca en el segundo año-, con tallos cuadrangulares repletos de pequeños aguijones o acúleos. Sus hojas son grandes, lanceoladas con el margen recortado en formas punzantes, sésiles, de color verde claro con el nervio medial ancho, resaltado en blanco y con aguijones adicionales en el reverso. Estas hojas se disponen opuestas en pares y, especialmente las de la base del tallo, están algo soldadas de manera que forman un pequeño cuenco donde se acumula el agua de lluvia y donde no es raro encontrar insectos ahogados. Si la parte vegetativa de la cardencha ya es característica, la inflorescencia no es menos espectacular. Se trata de un gran capítulo ovoide, densamente erizado de brácteas punzantes. Cada bráctea protege una flor que, al abrirse, mostrará una corola soldada en tubo, de color rosa violáceo y, a diferencia de las flores de la familia compuestas, 4 estambres libres. Primero se abrirán las flores que ocupan la franja central de la inflorescencia y, días más tarde, lo harán las de las franjas de arriba y abajo. A modo de fortificación de defensa adicional, posee además unas elegantes hojas transformadas, estrechas y punzantes, que se curvan y se dirigen hacia arriba, hasta superar con creces la altura de la inflorescencia.
La cardencha vive en las buenas tierras húmedas cercanas a los arroyos y en los bordes de las acequias.

As you can see, the male Bowerbird has this funky pink crest that adorns the back of his head and the nape of the neck. THis was the best shot I could get of it as he obviously wasn't trying to attract me with his charms.

The species of the genus Xylocopa are big bees, robust, hairy, with coloration from black to blue or metallic green in females and yellow in males of many species.
The name “carpenter bees” is mainly associated to Xylocopini, because they excavate their galleries within hard and usually dead wood, excepting the palearctic subgenus Proxylocopa.
They arepolilectic bees, that is, they visit a great variety of plants. Their provisions consist of a compact and dry mixture of pollen.

The photograph captures the vivid scene of crimson and orange Daylilies in the aftermath of a summer rain. The petals, splashed with drops that reflect the subdued daylight, appear invigorated and richly colored. The dynamic range of reds to oranges in the petals creates a visual warmth that contrasts with the cool freshness left by the rain. Each bloom is in a different stage of its life cycle, some vibrant and full, others gently wilting, a natural tapestry of growth and senescence. The green leaves, robust and sword-like, cradle the flowers, their dark color making the reds and oranges pop even more dramatically. This ensemble of Daylilies, captured with raindrops that amplify their allure, presents a scene of natural vibrancy and the cyclical beauty of the garden in the rain.
Connu de tous, le "piaf" est si commun en milieu urbanisé et si peu farouche que le passant ne daigne même plus le regarder, excepté lorsqu'il a quelques miettes à lui lancer. Pourtant, cette petite boule de plumes sautillante, robuste et effrontée mérite notre attention.

En la región que llaman de Carballeda, tiene una modesta parroquia del siglo XIII en la que, a semejanza de la de Tábara y con ventaja sobre ella, destaca la importancia de la torre rematada por un chapitel en planos de curvada triangulación. Bajo el chapitel, una cornisa, en sus lados principales se torna tejaroz labrado. Una robusta cabeza de buey alude o se relaciona con el nombre de la localidad.

Crinum or Swamp Lily (Crinum pedunculatum) presents its first blooms of the spring in my Gold Coast hinterland garden. Each stem produces about twenty blooms eventually. It is a popular and robust garden plant in northern Australian gardens and is native to Australia and Papua New Guinea and a few Pacific Islands. I like the anthers!
