La bugola, o erba di S. Lorenzo come viene comunemente chiamata, è una pianta sempreverde tappezzante, originaria dell'Europa e dell'Asia occidentale. Produce stoloni robusti che permettono alla pianta di colonizzare rapidamente ampi spazi di terreno, allargandosi sottoterra; ha fusti a sezione quadrata, erbacei, di colore verde scuro; le foglie sono ovali, a cucchiaio, di colore verde scuro, spesso con i bordi porpora o marroni; per tutta la primavera, e parte dell'estate, produce numerose spighe erette, ricoperte da piccoli fiori tubolari blu-viola.
J'étais parti pour une randonnée à Céüse, une fois de plus, dans le but une fois de plus de photographier notamment les pierres plates sur lesquelles au bord du sentier, les ombres des plantes et les fines crevasses combinent de superbes motifs ; mais une vision solaire m'a contraint à garer au plus vite ma voiture et à approcher avec une gourmandise de bourdon affamé ce riche buisson jaune qui envahissait le talus bordant la route le long d'un jardin récemment aménagé : La Freissinouse est un village qui contient mal ses nouveaux lotissements dont les tentacules s'étendent en toutes directions, et notamment ici, sur la route venant de Sigoyer.
Ce buisson épais dont les larges ombelles aux tiges robustes se balançaient dans un fort vent tombant du nord s'élargissait sur le talus en une flaque de soleil, masquant de son anarchie profuse la clôture métallique fortifiée d'une haie épaisse et bien taillée qui entourait un pavillon récent.
Après un premier arrêt pour saluer sans déranger de leur sieste un troupeau de vaches allongées dans un pré à l'herbe sèche posant aimablement devant le magnifique panorama du pic de Bure qui de toute la journée n'a pas daigné se dévêtir tout à fait de son manteau de nuages, ce magnifique bouquet méritait un petit arrêt...

I took this image when I was visiting my cousins.
American Herring Gull (Larus smithsonianus) are large gulls with hefty bills and robust bodies. In flight, they look barrel-chested and broad-winged compared to smaller species such as Ring-billed Gulls.
Adults have light-gray backs, black wingtips, and white heads and underparts. In winter, dusky streaks mark their heads. Herring Gulls take four years to reach adult plumage. Juveniles are mottled brown; second-year birds are brown but show gray on the back. Third years have more gray on the back and more white on the head and underparts. The legs are dull pink at all ages.
Herring Gulls patrol shorelines and open ocean, picking scraps off the surface. Rallying around fishing boats or refuse dumps, they are loud and competitive scavengers, happy to snatch another bird's meal. They spend much of their time perched near food sources, often in congregations of gulls.
Look for Herring Gulls in winter along coasts and near large reservoirs, lakes, and major rivers. They feed in habitats as diverse as open water, mudflats, plowed fields, and garbage dumps, and gather in almost any open space near food. In summer, they’re most likely to be seen along the Atlantic Coast, Great Lakes, and coastal Alaska; they also breed across the boreal far north.- Wikipedia
ROBUST AND PUGNACIOUS LITTLE WADER. The Turnstone has a short, stout and triangular bill that is used to turn stones and tideline debris in search of seashore invertebrates. All birds have reddish-orange legs, and show a striking black an white pattern in flight. Sexes are similar.

El Acueducto de los Milagros es una construcción de ingeniería civil para el transporte de agua del embalse de Proserpina a cinco kilómetros de la antigua ciudad de Mérida en España. Tradicionalmente se ha datado su origen en la ciudad de Emérita Augusta, capital de la provincia Lusitania en el Imperio Romano en el siglo I, perdurando su uso durante varios siglos. Forma parte del
conjunto arqueológico de Mérida, declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 1993.
Dicho acueducto tenía como función principal suministrar agua al lado oeste de la ciudad. El punto de captación de agua o caput aquae se situaba en el embalse de Proserpina, desde donde nacía una conducción por cañería que serpenteaba a lo largo de entre once o diez kilómetros.
La conducción discurre sinuosa bajo el suelo siguiendo la curva de nivel con una ligera pendiente. Es en su mayor parte una galería subterránea excavada en roca viva, salvo en los pasos sobre algunos arroyos que se salvan con pequeñas arquerías en alzado. En la parte final de la conducción es donde se sitúa la arquería más famosa, cuando se salva el río Albarregas, para lo cual se tuvo que construir una serie de pilares -arcuationes- que constituyen la parte más vistosa. El acueducto finalizaba al entrar en la ciudad por el punto más alto del cerro del Calvario, donde apareció intramuros, un ninfeo como final monumental (tradicionalmente denominado castellum aquae, aunque este debió situarse en las proximidades).
Este último tramo de arcos superpuestos se alarga 830 metros, con una altura de 25 metros en la parte más profunda del valle del río Albarregas. La estructura de dicho tramo es característica de Mérida. Se compone de robustos pilares, en los que alternan cinco hiladas de sillares de granito con otras tantas hiladas de ladrillo, otorgando así una peculiar elegancia con la mezcla de los dos colores, el del granito y el rojo intenso del ladrillo. Arcos a diferentes alturas van enlazando los pilares, cuyo núcleo es de opus caementicium. Los arcos de enlace son de ladrillo, salvo el que salva el cauce del río, que tiene las dovelas de granito muy bien trabajadas. Son todavía 73 los pilares que han permanecido más o menos deteriorados.
Popularmente se dice que su nombre, acueducto de los Milagros, se debe al asombro general de haber resistido tantos siglos como si fuera un milagro divino.

The old robust lock gates and the friendly lock keeper's houses offer a beautiful view of the Volkerak and the nature reserves outside the dike, Slikken van de Heen and Dintelse Gorzen. The Slikken van de Heen on the Brabant side is not accessible to visitors. However, the Dintelse Gorzen can be visited by hikers. Natuurmonumenten has set out a walking route here that makes it possible to experience this beautiful and unique nature up close.
Next to the lock is an old bunker from the Second World War. This was built by the Germans at the time as part of the so-called 'Atlantic Wall' and served as a defence against possible attacks from the current Volkerak. Nowadays, the Information Centre for the West Brabant Waterline is located here.
Nature port Benedensas is the starting point for a beautiful walk, canoe, sloop or bike ride through the water-rich edge of the Brabantse Wal. Stroll along paths through the bird paradise of Dintelse Gorzen or experience the serene tranquility of the Steenbergsche Vliet by canoe. There is also plenty to discover at Benedensas itself. Little robust rainbow skink captured at White Rock, Queensland in full jpeg glory. Was one of at least five individuals all clamouring over a rocky outcrop in a seemingly co-operative fashion. Two in the leaf litter at the bottom of the rock face and two making their way down from the top. This little guy (approx 15cm tip to tail) looked like he was on sentry duty who would frequently wave his tail back and forth as though communicating my presence to the others or to serve as a warning to me. More than likely though it is no more than a distraction… to keep my eye on the tail, that they can so easily drop, in order to make a hasty get away.

"Salal is a dense, robust, thicket-forming subshrub or shrub, usually from 1-4 ft. high, with erect or spreading, intricately branched stems which can root when reclining. Whitish to pale pink, urn-shaped flowers hang along reddish or salmon racemes in upper leaf axils. Flowers are followed by dark-blue fruit.
The fruit is a source of food for wildlife and were once also eaten by coastal Native Americans, one group of whom, the Chinook, gave the plant its common name, Salal. The leaves are often used in flower arrangements."
These robust green wild leek leaves are reaching skyward for the scant sunshine as they hope to photosynthesize and power the growth of their amazing underground bulbs. Out east in the Appalachian Mountains these plants are called ramps and residents there hold festivals to celebrate the flavor of those edible bulbs. Don't pick them here at the State Preserve but if you have wild leeks growing on your property you can dig up a few bulbs and savor their delicious woodsy onion flavor. Wild leeks do flower, but not until July when these large distinctive leaves are long gone.

SMALL (20cm) ROBUST WADER, feeds along the edges of breaking waves, running at great speed. Used to see flocks up to a hundred or so around Thanet, now all you seem to see is in ones or twos if your lucky! SEEN AT HAMPTON, Nr HERNE BAY, KENT U.K.........................Best viewed large.

Robust, gregarious, and black-trimmed large white pigeon. Inhabits coastal forests on small offshore islands, only making occasional forays to mainland areas to forage and to roost. Often perches high on the bare branches of trees or on power/telephone lines; often found in flocks of ten or more. Song is very low in pitch and includes “woo-oo-woooo,” with the last syllable drawn out; loud at first and then trailing off. Compare with Silver-tipped and Torresian Imperial-Pigeons where overlap exists; no similar species in introduced range in the Caribbean. (eBird)

We saw these pretty pigeons only a couple of times during our time in Singapore. Always high up in a tree, in small groups. We'd seen the Torresian Imperial-Pigeon in Australia, and honestly, I can't tell the difference between the two.

ROBUST AND FAMILIAR SEABIRD, best known for its large and densely packed breeding colonies. Swims well and dives frequently , it flies on whirring wingbeats and the relatively narrow wings are also used when swimming under water. Found it difficult to capture a decent image of them, on this visit, always a bit hidden by the cliffs.

Es una hierba robusta perenne, más o menos pubescente, que puede alcanzar un metro de altura. De profunda raíz única, cónica, gruesa y pivotante. Muestra numerosas ramificaciones; las hojas basales son espatuladas, semicarnosas, suavemente dentadas, y las ubicadas en la parte superior del tallo se encuentran reducidas a brácteas. La floración, entre julio y septiembre, da lugar a inflorescencias liguladas de color azul-lila más o menos intenso e incluso rosa o blanco, sostenidas por un pedúnculo largo, rígido y estriado longitudinalmente; la flor tiene la particularidad de no abrirse más que a pleno sol, y seguir la trayectoria de éste al igual que los girasoles. Liane robuste endémique à la Nouvelle-Calédonie, pouvant atteindre 25 m, commune en forêt dense humide sur la Grande Terre.
Le Moucherolle à dos bâti (Batis pririt) est une espèce de passereau de la famille des Batidae. Il réside en Afrique australe et dans le sud-ouest de l’Angola.
C’est un petit oiseau insectivore robuste, que l’on trouve dans les forêts sèches de feuillus et les broussailles épineuses. Le nid est une petite coupe soignée basse dans un arbre ou un buisson.

Robust and stocky, attractively marked with yellowish brown and white markings. Found in woodlands where the larvae will develop in rotten branches, mainly Oak. These nocturnal beetles can be seen from April to September. Rare in Southern England and South Wales.
Hace semanas que no salgo al campo, pero hoy puedo subir unas cuantas fotillos, jeje, ahi unos Lestes dryas del mes pasado en Madrid, muchos ejemplares parasitados por ácaros rojos, como este, también sobre los Sympetrum sanguineum y presumiblemente sobre su huésped favorito, S. meridionale, aunque cuando fueron tomadas estas fotos estos aún no habían emergido.
Entre estos Lestes dryas se encontraba también algún L. sponsa, aunque yo no logré fotografiar ninguno.
Oiseau fin au plumage brun, légèrement plus grand que le rouge-gorge mais pas aussi droit. Sa queue est d'un roux chaud. Ses pattes sont longues et robustes, et qu'est-ce qu'il chante bien.....

Taken at Ongegund Lodge & Conference Centre, Old Sir Lowry's Pass Rd, Helderberg Rural, Western Cape, South Africa.
Deeply romantic yet squat and robust, Wells Cathedral, the Cathedral of St Andrew the Apostle, is mostly in Early English style. Construction was started in 1175 by Bishop Reginald FitzJocelyn on the site of a Saxon abbey built by St Aldhelm in 705; it replaced Sherborne as the seat of an episcopal see in 909, and it was removed again to Bath after the Norman Conquest in 1090. The new building begun by FitzJocelyn was intended from its inception to facilitate a return of the episcopal seat to Wells. The bulk of the work was finished by 1326.
The magnificent West Front, with 300 sculpted figures, followed in the years after 1365 under master mason William Wynford.
The Cathedral fell into disrepair under Oliver Cromwell, and after a happy interlude during the Restoration was again damaged by Puritan soldiers during the Monmouth Rebellion, who damaged the West Front and stabled their horses in the nave.
Wells Cathedral is the seat of the Bishops of Bath and Wells.
Robust warbler found near the ground in thick vegetation. Yellow below with blue-gray head and olive back. Adult males show black chest patch. Females are paler gray on the head; immatures are more olive-toned with a yellowish throat. Breeds in brushy, weedy clearings within mixed or coniferous forest. Often favors raspberry thickets. Tends to stay hidden in low vegetation, so can be difficult to see. Listen for its rolling song, “churry churry churry chew.” Most similar to MacGillivray’s Warbler, but little range overlap, and Mourning has somewhat shorter tail and lacks bold white eye-arcs. Also frequently confused with Common Yellowthroat, especially in fall, but Mourning is larger, with heftier pinkish bill, and brighter yellow underparts. (eBird)
You almost never see a Mourning Warbler high in a tree, so seeing this male out in the open, singing his heart out to potential mates, was very exciting. Previously, I had had only a quick glimpse of a face deep in the shrubs.

Die Ponys sind sehr robust und finden Verwendung sowohl in der Landwirtschaft als auch bei der Erhaltung von zahlreichen Naturschutzgebieten wie Geltinger Birk (Ostsee), Schmidtenhöhe (Koblenz) oder dem Brönnhof bei Schweinfurt und im polnischen Białowieża-Nationalpark, wo sie in extensiver Landwirtschaft gehalten werden. Die größte Population lebt in Oostvaardersplassen in den Niederlanden unter nahezu wilden Bedingungen.
The Konik (from Polish: horse, small horse) is a pony breed from Central and Eastern Europe. The ponies are very robust and are used both in agriculture and in the preservation of numerous nature reserves such as Geltinger Birk (Baltic Sea), Schmidtenhöhe (Koblenz) or the Brönnhof near Schweinfurt and in the Polish Białowieża National Park, where they are kept in extensive agriculture . The largest population lives in Oostvaardersplassen in the Netherlands in almost wild conditions.

The Harpy Eagle is a massive raptor of lowland forests of Central and South America. It has a strong bill and particularly robust tarsi and toes, which coupled with its large body size position the Harpy Eagle as the world's most formidable eagle (Brown and Amadon 1968). Although it can capture a variety of prey, Harpy Eagles are notable for hunting primarily medium sized mammals, such as sloths and small monkeys. It already has been extirpated from many areas where it formerly was found, especially in northern Central America, and despite its wide distribution the species as a whole is regarded as Near-Threatened by BirdLife International and it is in the red list as Vulnerable by the IUCN 2023.
