A ROBUST and pugnacious little wader. The Turnstone has a short, stout, and triangular bill that is used to turn stones and tideline debris in search of seashore invertebrates, but I rather suspect that this sea defence bolder is it a bit too big by far ..........lol........Seen at Hampton, near Herne Bay Kent.

SMALL and ROBUST wader, that feeds along the edges of breaking waves on sandy beaches, running often at great speed, often with other waders like the turnstones, a real joy to watch, and a bit of a challenge to photograph. Seen at Minnis Bay, Birchington Kent.

Robust songbird with short, fairly stout bill. Male pale gray above, pale orange below, with a bold white throat bordered in back. Female and immature are grayish above, pale below with extensive streaking that fades at buffy lower belly. Inhabits drier woodland and shrubland. Loud whistling song, given by both sexes. (eBird)

Comonly seen and heard but often difficult to photograph. I finally got an opportunity to capture this distant male perched out in the open. We'd been able to get fairly close to the females a few times, so this was a nice chance to complete the "set".

Eagle-Eye Tours - Eastern Australia.
ROBUST and familiar seabird, best known for its large and densely packed breeding colonies. The Guillemot swims well and dives frequently, its relatively narrow wings are also used when swimming underwater. Black and white but has a chocolate brown head and upperparts, seen in certain light.
Sexes are similar, and much loved by me. See on Skomer.

I've had a hard time identifying this pretty bird since I downloaded it. Merlin suggested a female White-breasted Whistler, but that would be rare. A quick check of my eBird checklists informed me we had a seen a Rufous Whistler and, et voilá, problem solved. A female Rufous Whistler (I hope). The eBird reviewer will be very quick to advise me if I am wrong.

Robust songbird with a strong, pointed bill. Grayish overall except for brown back and pale spot between eyes and bill (lores). Immature similar but with faint streaks on breast; juvenile more heavily streaked still, with rusty eyebrow. Inhabits most treed environments in Australia, foraging in pairs from ground level into treetops. Sings a beautiful five-note song. (eBird)

We recorded these birds nearly every day during our travels, but they were usually very difficult to see. This photo is from our first encounter with the Gray Shrikethrush, and it really didn't want its photo taken. Still, I managed to get most of the bird in the frame before it disappeared back into the deep shadows.

Robust warbler found near the ground in thick vegetation. Yellow below with blue-gray head and olive back. Adult males show black chest patch. Females are paler gray on the head; immatures are more olive-toned with a yellowish throat. Breeds in brushy, weedy clearings within mixed or coniferous forest. Often favors raspberry thickets. Tends to stay hidden in low vegetation, so can be difficult to see. Listen for its rolling song, “churry churry churry chew.” Most similar to MacGillivray’s Warbler, but little range overlap, and Mourning has somewhat shorter tail and lacks bold white eye-arcs. Also frequently confused with Common Yellowthroat, especially in fall, but Mourning is larger, with heftier pinkish bill, and brighter yellow underparts. (eBird)

When we arrived at the trail, we could hear him singing deep in the tangles below the path. We looked high and low, and finally resigned ourselves to a "heard" tick for this lovely warbler. After spending a hour or two on the trail, in the company of mosquitoes, we headed back to the car. A large crowd of people alerted us to something good and there he was, out in the open, singing for all to hear.

This is taken on the veranda of the Rocket Cafe Cromer. Scared of heights, forty foot drop but no camera shake ! Note robust fence! It was a beautiful bright day after two days of driving rain.

In Alberta, this robust flycatcher of the Genus Contopus breeds in the boreal forests. We can see them here in central Alberta as they pass through during their southern migration.
They spend the winter in the tropics.

The Australian magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white passerine bird native to Australia and southern New Guinea. Although once considered to be three separate species, it is now considered to be one, with nine recognised subspecies. A member of the Artamidae, the Australian magpie is placed in its own genus and is most closely related to the black butcherbird (Melloria quoyi). Currawongs have yellow eyes, whereas Magpies have red-brown eyes and Butcherbirds have very dark brown, almost black eyes. It is not, however, closely related to the European magpie, which is a corvid. The adult Australian magpie is a fairly robust bird ranging from 37 to 43 cm in length, with distinctive black and white plumage, gold brown eyes and a solid wedge-shaped bluish-white and black bill. The male and female are similar in appearance, and can be distinguished by differences in back markings. The male has pure white feathers on the back of the head and the female has white blending to grey feathers on the back of the head. With its long legs, the Australian magpie walks rather than waddles or hops and spends much time on the ground. Described as one of Australia's most accomplished songbirds, the Australian magpie has an array of complex vocalisations. It is omnivorous, with the bulk of its varied diet made up of invertebrates. It is generally sedentary and territorial throughout its range. Common and widespread, it has adapted well to human habitation and is a familiar bird of parks, gardens and farmland in Australia and New Guinea. This species is commonly fed by households around the country, but in spring (and occasionally in autumn) a small minority of breeding magpies (almost always males) become aggressive and swoop and attack those who approach their nests. Paws for thought… The beautiful Caracal is a medium-sized cat native to Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and arid areas of Pakistan and northwestern India. It is characterised by a robust build, long legs, a short face, long tufted ears, and long canine teeth.
