Abstraction in its main sense is a conceptual process where general rules and concepts are derived from the usage and classification of specific examples, literal ("real" or "concrete") signifiers, first principles, or other methods.
"An abstraction" is the outcome of this process—a concept that acts as a common noun for all subordinate concepts, and connects any related concepts as a group, field, or category.
Conceptual abstractions may be formed by filtering the information content of a concept or an observable phenomenon, selecting only the aspects which are relevant for a particular subjectively valued purpose.

I received a wonderful surprise from my friend Rob in the mail today. It sure brightened up my day and I'm gonna wait for just the right time to light it up! Thank you Buddy!
Continuing with my current fad of messing about with portraits, I decided to turn the camera on Rob...
Rob lost his luxurious beard in a tragic accident with some clippers in the hands of an irresponsible hair cutter. Fortunately, for us, he's still a handsome young man.
A Local Landmark Many people who visit Marvig ask the significance of the painted rock by the road junction in the village. A picture of the rock even appears in an Art Gallery in Glasgow by all accounts. Painted on the rock is the legend Thuit Rob an a seo (Rob fell here). The Rob referred to is Seaman Robert Campbell. He was well known for having a dram or two and he fell and split his head on the rock then went home and fell into his bed. When he woke up his head was stuck to the pillow and after examination he was sent to the hospital but he soon signed himself out. By all accounts it was a pretty nasty gash.

Stranger Portrait #10
Well its official, I have hit double figures!! I will be honest and say that I am impressed with my (to use an Americanism) sticktoitadness because there was a time yesterday when I was about to pack up and go home with only one stranger portrait having been shot in 2 and a half hours. After shooting #9 Sabrina I walked the streets of Perth for what seemed like an age, really struggling to find someone interesting to shoot. Add to that I had a couple of knockbacks and I had just about talked myself into cutting my losses and getting on the train for the long commute home.
Luckily enough, Rob appeared in the middle of a crowd and I thought back to something I had read on Barbara Asboth's blog (barbasboth.com/blog/street-portraiture-the-100-strangers-...) about her needing to challenge herself to photograph/approach different kinds of people, particularly older men. I was mindful of this and wanted to challenge myself to shoot someone different to what I had been shooting. Rob was the perfect subject with a HUGE moustache that screamed character.
I stopped him and introduced myself etc etc and he seemed a bit suspicious but when I told him that the reason I stopped him was because of his awesome moustache he relaxed (I think he knew it was pretty cool : - ) ). I asked him where he was from and he told me "Beverly". Me not being from Perth did what I usually do when people talk about places said "oh yeah... where's that?" he laughed and said "nobody ever knows where Beverly is"! He told me it was 20 minutes past another tiny town about an hour from the outskirts of the city. "Ahhhhhhh" I said, still having no idea.
Apparently he has had his moustache all the way since the 60s. And as a person who has had his fair share of facial hair, i asked him a question that had always perplexed me "doesn't it get in your food and stuff when you are eating?" (a problem I had encountered when my beard got unruly). He drawled, "nah you get used to it". Then he came out with an absolute gem "they used to have lifters for that you know" and he went on to describe an apparatus whereby one lifts one's moustache while eating to avoid it interfering with your food! He went on to demonstrate!! What a character!! I was giggling like a schoolgirl!
