Reserves of fossil fuels are declining and the EU wants to shift to a low carbon economy. On Tuesday MEPs on the Environment Committee called for improvements to the emissions trading system (ETS) to help meet EU targets for a minimum reduction of 80% in CO2 emissions by 2050.

AECOM – (Ljungby and Toftanäs, Sweden)
The primary goal of this SEK 1 billion project is to create a motorway link with minimal impact on the local community. Encompassing four interchanges, 28 bridges (nine over and 19 along the E4, including two over rivers), AECOM was responsible for the preliminary design and environmental impact assessment for 31.5 kilometers of the E4 between Ljungby and Toftanäs in Småland, Sweden.
Involving more than 15 subconsultants in Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, AECOM required a well-defined data environment and workflow. Using Bentley Descartes, Bentley Pointools, InRoads, MicroStation, OpenRoads, and ProjectWise, the team was able to enforce CAD and civil software standards across all design teams. Extensive utilization of 3D modeling streamlined collaboration and allowed for earlier clash detection.

All professionals talk about strategy, but few really understand what it means, or how to apply it correctly. How to Think Strategically challenges biased thinking and allows readers to enjoy the rewards of sound strategy and strategic thinking.
In the business world, 'strategy' must rank as one of the most bandied-about terms whenever there's a discussion on how to grow a company, win a new client or beat the competition.
Unfortunately, it is also one of the least understood — with many conflicting takes among professionals and scholars on what strategy actually means. The casualty of all this confusion is the quality of strategy that is actioned — and the results that follow.

How to Think Strategically: your roadmap to innovation and results — a new Financial Times series book released this month by Pearson, the world's leading educational publisher — promises to do away with this “boardroom babble” once and for all by equipping professionals with a clear framework of “the strategy roundabout”, methods such as “lean testing” and tools that will enable the reader to develop a strategic mind-set and devise a winning business strategy time and again.
The 280-page handbook tackles both theory and practical applications, providing an easy-to-follow roadmap that takes readers through the whole process of strategic thinking and provides a powerful framework of theories, tools and tips illustrated with a wealth of real-world case studies.
By the close of the book, professionals of all levels will be able to formulate a robust, compelling strategic plan capable of handling any situation or objective — efficiently AND effectively.
Co-authors Davide Sola and Jerome Couturier, professors of strategy and management at ESCP Europe Business School, have assisted businesses large and small in sharpening their strategies in their capacity as strategy consultants for McKinsey, A. T. Kearney and 3H Partners, a company that advises multinationals and governments about entrepreneurial solutions.
They say that although everyone has an innate ability to strategise, and do so quickly, most fail to take strategic thinking beyond intuition and vague notions of 'goals', 'situation analyses' or to-do lists. While helpful, none of these alone constitutes a strategy.
Professor Sola said: “Many people in business, even at management level, are very confused about what strategy really means. They do not have a clear theory to follow. This leads to hit-and-miss results with as many bad, and costly, business decisions as good ones. “Strategy embraces goals, objectives, planning, resources and more, but it cannot be reduced to any one of them.
“How to Think Strategically is a step-by-step practical guide to getting to grips with, and embracing, strategy as an invaluable tool to achieving individual or company business goals.”
The book is divided into two sections:
Part one explores what strategy is, highlights the factors that lead to success and explains how to turn strategic thinking into strategy
Part two focuses on putting strategic thinking into practice with a step-by-step walkthrough on devising and implementing a business strategy, and how to identify and deal with any challenges that arise.
To accompany the title, and help bridge the gap between theory and implementation, a handy Strategic Plan Generator App is also available which allows the user to apply their new-found skills by crafting a strategic plan.

This roadmap by H. M. Gousha Company of Chicago was distributed free in 1951 by Chevron gasoline stations. It shows Arizona before the Interstate Highways and before Lake Havasu City was created. (There is a gutter line with staples, an artifact from the original Gousha booklet, visible across the top of the map.)

I was asked by some potential buyers to give them testshots of the 17-55 mm 2.8 out of cam in the critcial areas (f 2.8, 17 and 55 mm).
So we went on a walk and I just stared shooting. Fortunately I had set the cam to RAW + jpeg. So after I had loaded down the pictures for the potential buyers I found that there were actually some RAWs worth developing "for real". So here is my son with his current favorite hobby. His style is evolving fast and I know that I will miss my lens once it is gone...

Political groups welcomed Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s ambitious vision for a strong and united Europe 2025 in the annual “State of the Union” debate this morning.

Nur wenige regionale Konflikte waren von so langer Dauer wie der indisch-pakistanische Konflikt vor allem um das umstrittene Gebiet von Jammu und Kaschmir.
In Kooperation mit den Büros der Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung in Delhi und Lahore kamen auf Initiative indischer und pakistanischer NGOs im Januar 2010 Vertreter der Zivilgesellschaften beider Länder zu einer Friedenskonferenz in Delhi zusammen, der Indo-Pakistan Peace Conference. Nach Abbruch der offiziellen Friedensverhandlungen zwischen Indien und Pakistan nach den Terroranschlägen von Mumbai im November 2008 saßen damit erstmals wieder Repräsentanten beider Seiten an einem Tisch. Sie fordern die Wiederaufnahme der Regierungsgespräche und einen Fahrplan zur bilateralen Versöhnung und regionalen Stabilität.
Die Konferenz wurde organisiert von ANHAD, Centre for Policy Analysis, COVA, Focus on the Global South India, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Hind-Pak Dosti Manch, Peace Mumbai, SAHR, SANGAT und SAPA.

ESCP Europe Professor Dr Davide Sola took the opportunity of teaching in Tokyo to offer alumni and guests a talk on the book he co-authored with fellow professor Dr Jerome Couturier: How to Think Strategically: your roadmap to innovation and results
The CCIFJ, the French Chamber of Commerce in Japan hosted the talk and a drinks reception, which was well attended on Wednesday 12th March 2014.
Dr Sola provided an overview of the key concepts behind strategic thinking, drawing on the theme of his successful business book and app 'How to Think Strategically', posing the question: some people seem to achieve the best results, again and again. Is it luck? Or is it strategy?
"Strategy is everyone's business. It is impossible for a few senior executives, even very gifted ones, to know everything that is important about what is going on in an organisation and its environment, and all the lessons that are being learned, not just in R&D, but right across the operation," said Dr. Sola in his book.
Dr Sola was in Japan to run the second module of the Global Manager Programme 2014, dedicated to Strategy Management.
