Freak Family Medicine

For 33 Days Of Halloween

Candy: *gently elbows Danny in the ribs* “You can’t ask her that!”

Danny (unrepentantly): “She’s one of the band. I can ask her whatever I’d ask Dane or Caid. Chuck?”

Charley: *blush painting her cheeks* “Look it’s complicated. I didn’t sleep with him, but…”

Danny: *winces* “There’re a lot of carnal possibilities in that ‘but,’ Chuck.”

Charley: *tightens her arms across her chest, defensively* “You don’t understand. My relationship with Diego is complicated. I couldn’t even begin to explain it, because I don’t even understand it myself half the time. He saved me—took me in when I had no one else, fed me, protected me, and then taught me to protect myself. He also may have, um, helped me work through a couple of my…*mutters* intimacy problems.”

Danny: “Oh, geez! So he’s like your own personal savior? That’s what you’re tellin’ me here? Damn, how is Great Dane supposed to compete with that? What man could? *shakes his head* Poor bastard.”

Candy: “Danny, don’t be stupid! She wasn’t saying she’s in love with Diego. She was just explaining why she has strong feeling for him. That’s what you were doing, right, Charley? You don’t, uh, love-love him…do you?”

Charley: “No. Absolutely not. As good as Diego has been to me, and as much as I do love him…*rolls her eyes at Danny’s moan of distress* Not love-love him! Good grief, I sound like one of my frickin’ sixth graders right now! Happy? Diego and I would never work on that level. He’s really…difficult and he makes me want to cut out his heart with a spoon nine days outta ten.”

Danny: *smiles, despite himself* “Why a spoon, cousin? Why not an ax or…”

Charley: *in her best Alan Rickman drawl* “Because. It’s dull, you twit, and it’ll hurt more.”

Candy: “Um, out of curiosity, what does this Diego look like?”

Charley: *shrugs* “I dunno. Tall. Dark. Not ugly.”

Candy: *clutches Danny’s arm in distress, digging her nails in* “Fantastic.”

Charley: “And his smile’s kind of crooked, like one side goes up a little higher than the other one…*voice trails off as she notices Candy’s and Danny’s expressions of alarm* We lived together for three years! I know him really well. Besides, I was just saying that his smile’s lopsided. It’s not like I’m waxing poetic about his six-pack abs or anything.”

Candy: *mutters* “Great. He’s got abs now.”

Danny: “We are in trouble here, kiddies. Deep, deep trouble. Sinkin’ fast. Glug. Glug.”

ODC "above the rest"

For my own celebration to round off #pridemonth I have created some individual looks for two of my Lukii - perhaps what they would have worn for the Pride parade in London yesterday ☺️.

Lukas the Weekender’s outfit is channeling a D&G vibe in my head (especially their use of colourful brocade in mens suits and predilection for bare chested buff looking male models 😅). Lukas wears Rococo jacket in rainbow colours made by me, shorts from Tantric Lukas, fishnet FR stockings worn as socks and Bellamy Blue Hot to the Touch boots with laces replaced. Necklace from Ayumi Charmed Child (extended with nylon thread to fit). From Rock Ringmaster to Rococo Ringmaster, Lukas has come a long way…

Round and round it goes

Spinning faster and faster and time goes by

The ringmaster laughing at the little boys and girls screams of joy

Their parents watching from the sidelines

As their precious cargo is taken on a tour they will never forget

Painted horses are their vehicles today

Taking them to a world of magic and wonder

Where dreams will never die and come true

If you just wish that little extra harder

Nothing seems impossible

And the future doesn't seem so bleak

And it feels like you will never grow old

Echoes of the 1940s Circus: Steam Trains, Big Top Lights and Forgotten Wonders

Description

A cinematic journey through a fictional vintage circus world inspired by the atmosphere of the 1940s: steam trains arriving through clouds of smoke, crowded railway platforms, canvas tents rising at dawn, performers preparing behind the scenes, glowing fairground lights, brass bands, trapeze artists, ringmasters, clowns, fortune tellers, animal acts, travelling caravans and the quiet moments hidden between spectacle and exhaustion.

This collection evokes the golden age of travelling circuses as if seen through the lens of an old documentary photographer, but with the visual richness of modern cinematic photography. Warm amber lights, deep shadows, smoky interiors, velvet costumes, weathered wood, worn posters, dusty roads and dramatic faces create a world suspended between memory, theatre and dream. Each image suggests a fragment of a larger story: the arrival of the circus by train, the construction of the tent, the anticipation of the crowd, the tension before the performance, the intimacy of backstage rituals and the melancholy beauty of a show that exists only for one night before disappearing again.

The series blends realism and fantasy, presenting the circus not only as entertainment but as a temporary city of artists, workers, animals, music, mystery and human emotion. It captures both the grand spectacle and the fragile backstage humanity of a travelling world built from canvas, light, discipline and illusion.

Ringmaster ready

This is a fancy denim jacket. It’s got a band/military/circus flair. How can it be all three? Magic. Fancy denim jacket magic.

I thrifted this fancy denim jacket months ago and have been dying to wear it ever since. It’s been too hot to wear in Sacramento. It’s too restrictive to wear traveling. And I wasn’t allowed to wear it when presenting. Finally, it got to come out to play at my casual, sedentary, air-conditioned office.

Jacket, White House Black Market (thrifted). Dress, BB Dakota (thrifted). Boots, Steve Madden. Earrings, World Market. Scarf, DSW. Belt, thrifted.

***This outfit is modeled on Ashlyn.

PERSONAL FUN FACT: I had my reservations towards this outfit when I saw it on the American Girl website in 2021. I was placing my first Wellie Wishers order, after having just purchased two secondhand dolls at the local flea market. Colleen and I were brooding over which ensembles would be the most practical to buy. This Ringmaster Outfit simply didn't make the cut, even though it was a few dollars off on the website. I thought it was a bit too gimmicky to put money towards. A few days later, I had a thought about Kohl's website. I remembered that they too sold Wellie Wishers. This is unusual for American Girl, who typically only sells their own products. But the Wellies were licensed out to a select few locations. When I hopped on the Kohl's website, I was surprised to see an outfit that was sold out on the AG one. Plus, I realized that this Ringmaster Outfit was only $14!!! That was $10 off the retail price...more than the sale that was going on via American Girl. Since I needed some shorts for the summer (all mine were 13-14 year old cut offs I made from high school jeans), I thought this would be the ample opportunity. I hate spending decent money on my clothes, but I desperately needed shorts. I am also a size that's difficult to find at thrift stores...plus I'm weirdly particular about how pants fit me. The other three items all arrived first. For some reason this Ringmaster Outfit was shipped out a week later (it came from Texas). I was worried that there was some issue with the order, but was relieved when it actually was sent out. In person, this outfit is SO much cuter. I was blown away by the quality and its charm. Ashlyn is darling in this--more so than I anticipated. Colleen and I both agreed that Willa's red hair might clash a bit with all the pinks in this getup. The fun thing is, you can remove the coat, headband, and shoes in order to use just the bodysuit as pajamas!

From the Dark's Den of Deformity Family

The carnival is in Dark's blood. And there is quite a lot of blood in his carnival...

This build is based on the art from Atlas Games Gloom: The Game of Inauspicious Incidents & Grave Consequences by Keith Baker.

This is Catch Photo #73 I'm playing with My husband Darek (aka blankspace321).We each take turns adding one thing to the photo. We limit ourselves to a total of 10 additions. This is my 4th addition of the 10. Now it's Darek's turn.

As of August 29, 2022 we have been doing Catch Photos for thirteen (13) years.

The year ahead is like a circus performance in a world devoid of gravity. The show begins with the illusion of control – a ringmaster in a tall hat calls the audience to attention, his voice trembling with uncertainty while straining to sound authoritative. The curtain rises, but instead of solid ground beneath their feet, everything is consumed by an endless weightlessness.

The clowns float aimlessly, their painted smiles stretched in desperation as they try to catch props that constantly slip from their grasp. The audience watches, but it’s unclear whether they are mere spectators or part of the performance – their faces flicker like holograms, always on the verge of disappearing.

In the centre ring, the trapeze artists launch themselves, but there is no safety net to catch them. Their flight seems infinite, directionless. They drift apart, their hands reaching for something invisible – a dream or a reality they can no longer grasp. The acrobats stretch the laws of physics to their breaking point, but their movements feel more like desperate attempts to cling to their own essence than to impress the crowd.

And then, there’s the hall of mirrors – a strange sideshow tent in the circus. Here, every projection is cast back at us – our hopes, our fears, our masked faces. But the mirrors are shattered, and each fragment reflects a different version of the year, a different story. Which one is real? Who can say?

The music is chaotic – a cacophony of pompous trumpets and distorted violins that cuts to the soul. It has no rhythm, no beginning, no end, only a constant sensation of something suspended in the air – a decision, a conclusion, an escape.

The circus goes on, floating in a vacuum between the real and the artificial. The performance never ends, for there is no “next act” – only an eternal, weightless dance towards something indefinable. The audience does not applaud. They cannot decide whether the show is beautiful or tragic. Perhaps it is both. Perhaps it is neither.

Poem:

The ringmaster calls with a tremor concealed,

In a voice that wavers, its authority steeled.

The curtain lifts; the ground is lost,

In a realm where gravity pays the cost.

The clowns float by with painted grins,

Hiding despair as the show begins.

Their juggling acts, a futile fight,

To hold the pieces in the weightless night.

Above, trapeze artists leap and soar,

Reaching for dreams they can’t restore.

No net below, no tethered line,

They drift apart in endless time.

The mirrored tent reflects our fears,

A kaleidoscope of fractured years.

Each shard a tale, a fleeting face,

Reality scattered in time’s embrace.

The music wails, a discordant plea,

A symphony born of entropy.

No rhythm to guide, no end in sight,

Only the weightless, eternal flight.

And still the circus spins its tale,

A cosmic jest, a fragile frail.

No applause, no final bow,

Just weightless dancers lost in the now.

Haikus:

Endless trapeze arcs,

No ground beneath, only air,

Dreams dissolve mid-flight.

Mirrors fracture truth,

Faces flicker, fade, and blur,

What’s real disappears.

Painted smiles drift on,

Clowns juggle what they can’t hold,

Laughter turns to dust.

Gravity undone,

The circus spins in the void,

Time is the tightrope.

A client didn't want a clown because she thought the kids would be scared, so this Ringmaster was a great alternative.
