The collar/leash is also something random we found hanging in the workshop. (I should also point out that Anna mistook the choke chain collar hanging next to it for *nipple clamps*.)

Though not Christian, I have always enjoyed taking my camera to New York's Easter Parade to capture the costumes and excitement that make it unique.

Sadly, in 2020, like so many New Yorkers, I am self-sequestering at home, trying to stay safe and help slow or stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and even if I weren't, there was no Easter Parade to attend (for exactly the same reason).

As luck would have it, I never edited and posted my photos from the 2019 parade, so with ample time on my hands. here are some of my favorites from 2019. Hopefully, life and the parade can return to normal (or whatever you'd call it) in 2021.

Description and Synopsis:

The cover depicts a scene at a circus. A ringmaster holds the hand of a woman who may be a tight-rope walker. Behind them are a man, a horse, a clown, and a crowd of spectators.

Further Notes;

George R. Sims was a British playwright, novelist, journalist, and poet whose writing focused on the social issues of his day. He wrote detective fiction as well as fiction meant to stimulate social reform. Sims strived to imbue his writing with realism founded on the actual stories of the police, criminals, and London street-dwellers (“George R. Sims”).

The following "spot-on" comments by Valerie Lawson titled “Happily Ever After: The Ballets Russes’ Romeo and Juliet” are from the website Behind Ballet. They were first posted on December 5, 2011 at:

www.behindballet.com/happily-ever-after-the-ballets-russe...

“Tantrums and tears, catcalls and goggles, a visit from the police and a pink dressing gown slung on a peg. It could only be a scenario created by Diaghilev, the ringmaster of the Ballets Russes.

“In 1926, Diaghilev orchestrated a surrealistic version of Romeo and Juliet in which the lovers elope, departing the stage by plane in leather coats and airmen’s caps, complete with goggles. The scenario may seem Monty Pythonesque, but the months before – and after – the ballet’s premiere were far from funny. Following the first performances in Monte Carlo, the Ballets Russes presented the work in Paris, where the opening night was disrupted by a riot. Diaghilev could not have been happier. He thrived on scandal and outrage.

“The chaos accompanying the ballet’s creation was inevitable, considering the mélange of collaborators. Choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska, with an entr’acte by George Balanchine, the Ballets Russes’ production was danced to a score by the English composer Constant Lambert, with design by two leading surrealist artists.

“Diaghilev persuaded the Russian ballerina, Tamara Karsavina, to dance the role of Juliet, while Serge Lifar, Diaghilev’s lover at the time, danced the part of Romeo. Karsavina did not approve of Lifar’s partnering skills, but she hid her distress.

“Diaghilev initiated the work, commissioning Lambert, then 20, who called his score Adam and Eve. Diaghilev promptly changed that to Romeo and Juliet, then set about dictating the scenario. The story would take place during a rehearsal of a ballet based on Shakespeare’s play. Lambert was not impressed, but undeterred, he asked the distinguished portrait painter Augustus John to design the ballet. Diaghilev dismissed that idea, commissioning instead a friend of Lambert’s, the English artist Christopher Wood. But Wood, too, was dismissed, as Diaghilev decided that no designer was necessary. As the ballet was about a rehearsal of a ballet, there was no need for any scenery, he told Lambert. However, after a visit to France, Diaghilev changed his mind once again.

“At an exhibition in Paris he admired the works of the surrealist artists Max Ernst and Joan Miró. He bought paintings by both as a gift for Lifar, then commissioned the artists to design Romeo and Juliet.

‘“For a long time’, wrote the author, Arnold Haskell, ‘the Russian ballet had been considered bourgeois by the Surrealist group … the obvious thing to do was to commission décor from some of the group and win them over that way.’

“The designers travelled to Monte Carlo, where Ernst painted curtains representing day and night and Miró painted a front cloth. For the first scene, set in a rehearsal studio, Miró scattered some everyday bits and pieces – a barre, some screens, and that pink dressing gown centre stage. Lambert was horrified, telling his mother that the designers were ‘Tenth-rate painters from an imbecile group called the Surrealists’.

“In the second scene, depicting the performance of Romeo and Juliet, the tragedy unfolded in the usual way, but after the death of Juliet, Romeo – and a very much alive Juliet – donned their aviator costumes. The ballet ended with Karsavina, apparently representing a plane in flight, hoisted to a horizontal position on Lifar’s shoulders.

“The premiere at the Theatre de Monte Carlo on May 4 went well enough but when the ballet opened in Paris it was greeted with catcalls, whistles and fisticuffs, led by diehard surrealists who objected to Ernst and Miró being led astray by a capitalist venture (the Russian ballet).

“When the curtain rose to reveal Miró’s décor, a shower of leaflets fell from the upper balconies. Written in red ink by two founding members of the surrealist movement, Louis Aragon and André Breton, the leaflets were captioned ‘Protest!’

“Diaghilev was prepared. He had alerted the police to a probable disturbance and told the conductor to continue, even as the yelling drowned out the music. As Haskell wrote, the ‘plunge into modernism brought a scandal that was dear to him and convinced him he was on the right track’.

“But the life of this madcap Romeo and Juliet was brief. It took Prokofiev’s powerful score, written a decade later, to bless the ballet with its long life.”

Circus, circus cat and the Circus Ringmaster!!

Norman Barrett MBE, Ringmaster at Zippos Circus.

Lord of the Misterious Castle

[Lukas Maverick Rock Ringmaster re-root by me]

The year ahead is like a circus performance in a world devoid of gravity. The show begins with the illusion of control – a ringmaster in a tall hat calls the audience to attention, his voice trembling with uncertainty while straining to sound authoritative. The curtain rises, but instead of solid ground beneath their feet, everything is consumed by an endless weightlessness.

The clowns float aimlessly, their painted smiles stretched in desperation as they try to catch props that constantly slip from their grasp. The audience watches, but it’s unclear whether they are mere spectators or part of the performance – their faces flicker like holograms, always on the verge of disappearing.

In the centre ring, the trapeze artists launch themselves, but there is no safety net to catch them. Their flight seems infinite, directionless. They drift apart, their hands reaching for something invisible – a dream or a reality they can no longer grasp. The acrobats stretch the laws of physics to their breaking point, but their movements feel more like desperate attempts to cling to their own essence than to impress the crowd.

And then, there’s the hall of mirrors – a strange sideshow tent in the circus. Here, every projection is cast back at us – our hopes, our fears, our masked faces. But the mirrors are shattered, and each fragment reflects a different version of the year, a different story. Which one is real? Who can say?

The music is chaotic – a cacophony of pompous trumpets and distorted violins that cuts to the soul. It has no rhythm, no beginning, no end, only a constant sensation of something suspended in the air – a decision, a conclusion, an escape.

The circus goes on, floating in a vacuum between the real and the artificial. The performance never ends, for there is no “next act” – only an eternal, weightless dance towards something indefinable. The audience does not applaud. They cannot decide whether the show is beautiful or tragic. Perhaps it is both. Perhaps it is neither.

Poem:

The ringmaster calls with a tremor concealed,

In a voice that wavers, its authority steeled.

The curtain lifts; the ground is lost,

In a realm where gravity pays the cost.

The clowns float by with painted grins,

Hiding despair as the show begins.

Their juggling acts, a futile fight,

To hold the pieces in the weightless night.

Above, trapeze artists leap and soar,

Reaching for dreams they can’t restore.

No net below, no tethered line,

They drift apart in endless time.

The mirrored tent reflects our fears,

A kaleidoscope of fractured years.

Each shard a tale, a fleeting face,

Reality scattered in time’s embrace.

The music wails, a discordant plea,

A symphony born of entropy.

No rhythm to guide, no end in sight,

Only the weightless, eternal flight.

And still the circus spins its tale,

A cosmic jest, a fragile frail.

No applause, no final bow,

Just weightless dancers lost in the now.

Haikus:

Endless trapeze arcs,

No ground beneath, only air,

Dreams dissolve mid-flight.

Mirrors fracture truth,

Faces flicker, fade, and blur,

What’s real disappears.

Painted smiles drift on,

Clowns juggle what they can’t hold,

Laughter turns to dust.

Gravity undone,

The circus spins in the void,

Time is the tightrope.

For my own celebration to round off #pridemonth I have created some individual looks for two of my Lukii - perhaps what they would have worn for the Pride parade in London yesterday ☺️.

Lukas the Weekender’s outfit is channeling a D&G vibe in my head (especially their use of colourful brocade in mens suits and predilection for bare chested buff looking male models 😅). Lukas wears Rococo jacket in rainbow colours made by me, shorts from Tantric Lukas, fishnet FR stockings worn as socks and Bellamy Blue Hot to the Touch boots with laces replaced. Necklace from Ayumi Charmed Child (extended with nylon thread to fit). From Rock Ringmaster to Rococo Ringmaster, Lukas has come a long way…

Barbie® doll's favorite "ringmaster" of glamorous fashion — Bob Mackie — presents a stylish circus. Inspired by the exciting world beneath the Big Top, this doll wears an elaborate laced coat with extravagant red plumes. Her red boots and top hat are accented with a golden star and she comes seated on a black and golden trapeze swing. Costume, boots, gloves and hat are not removable. Doll may be removed from swing, but legs and arms will remain in a fixed position.

Ivy often feels she is the ringmaster of a bizarre universe...
