Well, I finally just bit the bullet and bought myself the ring flash. I've been eye-ing it, so I figured I'd just go ahead and get it. It comes with 4 rings: red, blue, yellow, and muted white. It also comes with at least a dozen colored gels that slide in front of each individual bulb, for a multicolored shot :) It's really fun to play with and I can't wait to see the results.

My DIY ringflash made of an old ring cake pan. This is a rough mock up and still a work in progress, the finished product will have a much better looking attachment point as well as a polished inside of the ring to hopefully be more reflective (my initial shots show that the flash power dies off a lot at the top). I'm trying to base my project on the Orbis ringflash since it seems to be a pretty nice one (that I'd love to have if it weren't $200). I also plan on making a bracket to attach to the camera or an umbrella stand.
D700, 50mm f/1.4G wide open, iso 500.
Outer ring cut from a strainer. Inner ring cut from a cereal bowl. Both coupled together with roughly 2.5 in. of PVC. Aluminum foil plastered to the inside, glue and duct tape hold it all together. A rectangular hole was cut in the bottom for a Vivitar 283, it's a nice little friction fit.
125/365 More ringflash loveliness together with my Holga. Took me a while to set up, only because I wanted a white(ish) background and had to fashion one out of some wrapping paper - I have ingenuity you see. Argh I LOVE the catchlights you get with ringflashes!
Taken at ISO 100 and f/11, in retrospect I think I'd have tweaked that a bit, but too late now :)

v 1.0 is a foam core back panel, corrugated cardboard sides & core, duct tape, acrylic face, packing material diffuser, velcro and silver mylar reflector inside, 12 1/4" dia. x 2" deep.
v 2.0 is a foam core manifold, take out container, margarine container core, duct tape, packing material diffuser, velcro and silver mylar reflector inside. 7 5/8" dia. x 2" deep.
Both of these work well for what they are. Most of the materials we're already available in my garage. Each took about 4.5 hours to make. When making one of these things, take your time, measure twice and cut once.
first in the series of dreams. ive asked members of my university to send in a vivid description of a dream they have had recently. and i will 'attempt' to recreate each dream. this is an example of the style i am looking for.

I bought 2 circular paper-mache boxes at the craft store (one big, one small), along with the template-plastic (it's in the quilting section).
I had the white & silver duct-tape on-hand at home.
so it cost me less than $10 (not including the tape).
the REAL one i want to buy is $200.
I WAS NOT GOING FOR AESTHETICS (obviously), this is purely for function. there is a DIY group here on Flickr that posts much prettier ones! :c )
This took me a few hours!
In putting together a new portfolio I've come across a number of older shots that weren't selects... though I now really like.

It was a very bright day in Liverpool and to be honest, too bright to do any anything in direct sunlight and use a flash but I was keen to try out an Orbis Ring flash I had recently aquired. I wasn't sure how usefull this kind of setup would be during the day but it really did seem to work well (if only to create the amazing spot catchlight in the models eyes).

just a quick go with my new "Ringflash." I attended the Photography show today at the NEC. So much to see and so much to learn! This week I am going to see if I cant put my speedlight to good use. You tube, google and a few hundred copies of practical photography should come in handy ;)
A home made ring flash. Made in 10mins out of a cardboard box, kitchen foil and a black card.

lighting: "studio setup" in the background with a Canon 430EX (courtesy of York PhotoSoc) and a Vivitar 285hv (that's the one that would be attached to the ring flash)
Got a little too close on this one so it is a touch hot.
