Japanese Maple leaf....flash fired from below through the leaf. Half power. Honestly I think this is one of the best shots I've ever taken. Pretty happy with this one.

Finally I did it, I went to the store and bought all the thing I needed to complete my ringflash! That included: aluminium bar, glue, screws, foam and some things more...
After a loooot of work I finished it! Now the parts are all connected and the flash is quite handy;-) As you see, it works well...and that thing is so damn powerful!
If someone is interrested in copying my idea, feel free to ask for my sketches if you don't have any clue of what I did!:-)

This was my first time using a ringflash thanks to John Grosclose. He had it all setup and even had a couple of SB-800 ready to go in optical slave mode. I had been wanting to work with hard side lights and a ringflash, and this was my chance.
Not so bad for my first shot. Malia threw out some great poses, and I had some fun with the setup and my G9. I do whish I had played with the output of the ringflash, but things move pretty fast at a Strobist meet... Next time.

Removing the attachment from the shoe mount flash allows you to swing open the ringflash and change lenses.
This is the finished prototype :)
Not the most pretty device to attach to a camera but hey... IJW (it just works)!
Oh and its quite a lightweight addition too :)
See notes for some construction details.

Brandi is a body builder who is entering a fitness competition. I would say her level of fitness is high. She is also quite beautiful (I know I had to tell you that); I removed a couple of small blemishes but that was it for post. No general skin retouching.

Final image from the blog entry on using a ringflash, combined with other lights, to light a product for a quite distinctive look.
Inspired by some of the DIY projects at www.strobist.com, I built my own strobe-based ring flash, and I think I got a good result for hundreds less than the "real" manufactured ones. It's constructed of two sheets of clear acrylic cut out on the bandsaw to form the basic shape, some tin flashing for the reflective interior, some flexible styrofoam to form the inner and outer ring, metallic duct tape and some velcro. I think it produces a nice even ring, with little fall-off on the top side away from the flash.
Look for some shots I did with Lexi and her friends with the ring flash coming up.

I bought an Orbis ringflash and tried it on Batman with great results. I think.
