v 1.0 is a foam core back panel, corrugated cardboard sides & core, duct tape, acrylic face, packing material diffuser, velcro and silver mylar reflector inside, 12 1/4" dia. x 2" deep.
v 2.0 is a foam core manifold, take out container, margarine container core, duct tape, packing material diffuser, velcro and silver mylar reflector inside. 7 5/8" dia. x 2" deep.
Both of these work well for what they are. Most of the materials we're already available in my garage. Each took about 4.5 hours to make. When making one of these things, take your time, measure twice and cut once.
first in the series of dreams. ive asked members of my university to send in a vivid description of a dream they have had recently. and i will 'attempt' to recreate each dream. this is an example of the style i am looking for.
The above image was captured during a Welshot Imaging Chester Academy Evening. The theme this month was all about “Vintage and Valentines – Off Camera Flash Photography”.

I bought 2 circular paper-mache boxes at the craft store (one big, one small), along with the template-plastic (it's in the quilting section).
I had the white & silver duct-tape on-hand at home.
so it cost me less than $10 (not including the tape).
the REAL one i want to buy is $200.
I WAS NOT GOING FOR AESTHETICS (obviously), this is purely for function. there is a DIY group here on Flickr that posts much prettier ones! :c )
This took me a few hours!
In putting together a new portfolio I've come across a number of older shots that weren't selects... though I now really like.
Taken with Alien Bees Ring Flash on lowest power... seamless was white... extremely fast falloff.
The above image was taken during a Welshot Imaging promo day in Liverpool in support of their new Liverpool Academy Evenings starting in April. For more information about Welshot including details of their Snapshot Day on the 15th April 2012 see their website:
It was a very bright day in Liverpool and to be honest, too bright to do any anything in direct sunlight and use a flash but I was keen to try out an Orbis Ring flash I had recently aquired. I wasn't sure how usefull this kind of setup would be during the day but it really did seem to work well (if only to create the amazing spot catchlight in the models eyes).
For more information about the Orbis ringflash:
The Model during the day was Carla Monaco:

just a quick go with my new "Ringflash." I attended the Photography show today at the NEC. So much to see and so much to learn! This week I am going to see if I cant put my speedlight to good use. You tube, google and a few hundred copies of practical photography should come in handy ;)
These are very common, but also fast (for a weevil) and uncooperative. This was on a fence rail and I suspect it was getting a little the worse for wear. Anyway, I could get better details and angles on it than normal.
A home made ring flash. Made in 10mins out of a cardboard box, kitchen foil and a black card.
see notes.
lighting: "studio setup" in the background with a Canon 430EX (courtesy of York PhotoSoc) and a Vivitar 285hv (that's the one that would be attached to the ring flash)
Got a little too close on this one so it is a touch hot.

My first attempt at making a ringflash modifier for my camera seems to have worked!
See before and after picture here.
Sorry for the low quality picture, obviously the nice camera was unavailable :-)
The only part you can't see is a 45 degree reflector inside the top that directs the light down.
Oh, and yes I know this isn't technically a "ring flash" it's a "light guide" but that doesn't sound as good.
