Lutheranism is Latvia's largest religion, and the Riga Cathedral is a Lutheran church -- though it started life as a Catholic cathedral in 1211, with various expansions and reconstructions over the years. In a refreshing bout of ecumenical pragmatism, the second-biggest church was handed back over to the Catholics, the second-biggest denomination, in 1923, shortly after Latvian independence. This was controversial enough that a referendum was called to block the transfer, but it failed resoundingly.
