The most famous of all Indian Steam Loco classes has to be the bullet nosed “WP” class. This one - 7000 - built by Chrzanów, Poland in 1958 is supposedly operational. Another source says the boiler needs work, so maybe not? Some background info: the WP Class was the standard express passenger loco for Indian Railways on the broad gauge network. The first 16 were built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1947, with 755 eventually being constructed by a variety of manufacturers. The earlier batches were constructed by Baldwin, MLW, the Canadian Locomotive Company and various European manufacturers before production switched to CLW - the Chittaranjan Loco Works in West Bengal. The last examples were produced in 1966. Rewari Steam Shed, 23rd March 2025.

The Rabari, also called the Rewari or Desai, are an indigenous tribal caste of nomadic cattle shepherds and camel herders that live throughout northwest India, primarily in the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, as well as some states in Pakistan, especially in the region of the Sindh Desert. They have roamed the deserts and plains of what is today western India for almost 10 centuries. For some traditional-minded families this is still the case now but the new generation is slowly moving away from this way of life.
The word "Rabari" translates itself as "outsiders", This is because of their trade and what they used to do in times past, refers to the fact that, as nomadic herders, in traditionally, they always move from one place to another on the outskirts of towns, where there was enough land for their grazing herds. Due to this reason, the Rabari couldn’t live in town houses and have room for their animals also. They started living on the outskirts of towns and beyond for this necessity.

Metre Gauge YP Pacific No. 2562 passing through the medieval fortifications at Debari Gate with the 01.00 from Rewari Junction to Udaipur City. From here there are just 15 kilometres to it's destination.
As travel opportunities are somewhat limited at the moment, I've started looking through the back catalogue of un-posted material and there's quite a lot to go at.
WDP3 No. 15514 departs Delhi Cantonment with train 2RD 07h40 Rewari - Delhi Jn Passenger on 27th October 2007. The metre gauge service had been discontinued 2 years previously and the single track broad gauge line was somehow expected to handle all the express trains and the substantial commuter volumes! Running a few passenger trains such as this with load 23 certainly helped, but expresses such as the Ashram still set sail from Delhi Cantoment etc with a healthy contingent of people on the roof!
The route is now broad gauge, double tracked and electrified.
Processed from a K64 slide.
TKD based WDM3A 14136 at Hisar whilst working train 14030 06h45 Meerut Cantt - Sri Ganga Nagar (Via Rewari and Bathinda) on 15th December 2024. At the time, I believed this would be my last BG Alco ride in India. Much to the amusement of friends and family, I returned in March 2025 and had more Alco rides, so the Alco can got kicked down the road a little further.

For those of us concerned by such matters this Tughlakabad loco didn't warrant close inspection - the number on the body, cab and bufferbeam had clearly been altered and appeared to read 15046 underneath! Loco identity stuff of nightmares and best swept under the carpet...
Last train of the 2006 trip was this beast, Tughlakabad WDP3A #15514 with train 8RD, the 17:15 Rewari Junction - Delhi Sarai Rohilla Passenger. Seen at its destination on Saturday 12th November.
As we made our wary towards Delhi there was a gradual worsening of the air quaility as the city's smog got steadily denser, to the point were I found it difficult to breath.

The Legendary and World's Oldest Running Steam Locomotive Puffs Out Smoke as it is being Shunted and Tested.
Some Information Regarding This Historical Gem. It is now housed at the only Functional Steam Shed in the country , The Rewari Steam Shed under Northern Railways.
History -
The locomotive was constructed by Kitson, Thompson and Hewitson at Leeds, in England, in 1855, and reached Kolkata, then known as Calcutta, in the same year.On arrival, it was given fleet number "22" by its owner, the East Indian Railway Company, not receiving a name until 1895. Initially, the 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) gauge locomotive was used to haul light mail trains in West Bengal, operating between Howrah and Raniganj, and during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 hauled troop trains. It was later consigned to line construction duty in Bihar, where it served until 1909.
The Fairy Queen spent the next 34 years on a pedestal outside Howrah station. In 1943, the locomotive was moved to the Railway Zonal Training School at Chandausi, in Uttar Pradesh, where it served as a curiosity object for many of the students based there.
Specifications -
The Fairy Queen was built by Kitson, Thompson and Hewitson at Leeds in England in 1855.The coal-fired engine is powered by two outside cylinders measuring 12 by 22 inches (300 mm × 560 mm), and has a power output of 130 horsepower (97 kW), producing a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour (25 mph). It carries 3,000 litres (660 imp gal) of water in an underslung water tank. The locomotive weighs 26 tonnes (26 LT), and the coal tender 2 tonnes (2.0 LT). Built for the 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) Indian gauge, it has a 2-2-2 wheel arrangement, developed by Robert Stephenson and Company in 1833, with a driving wheel measuring 1,800 millimetres (71 in) in diameter.
Restoration -
The Indian government bestowed heritage status on the Fairy Queen in 1972, rendering it a national treasure. It was restored and given a special spot in the newly built National Rail Museum at Chanakyapuri, in New Delhi.
Following the success of the Palace on Wheels, the locomotive was restored to full working order in 1997, in preparation for its first mainline journey in 88 years and its return to commercial service on 18 July. The two-day excursion saw the train plying the 143 kilometres (89 mi) from New Delhi to Alwar in Rajasthan, with passengers spending an overnight stay at the Sariska Tiger Reserve. The locomotive hauled a carriage capable of carrying 60 passengers at a maximum speed of 40 kilometres per hour (25 mph), with a service car holding a generator, compressor and pantry. The operation was repeated between December and February in the following years. It was certified by the Guinness Book of Records in 1998 as the world's oldest steam locomotive in regular operation. The following year, the train received a National Tourism Award for the most innovative and unique tourism project from Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Prime Minister of India.
In 2011, it was discovered that rare locomotive parts that were "as good as irreplaceable" had been stolen, and the locomotive was moved to Perambur Locomotive Workshops at Chennai, in Tamil Nadu, for repair. On arrival, it was found that an estimated 50 to 60 parts had been looted, including the boiler, condensor, lubricator and flow tubes. The Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer at the workshops stated "What we received is a dead body, a piece of metal whose every removable part has been removed, leaving only the metal shell. The list of parts to be procured is huge." Officials estimated that it could take at least a year to restore the engine, even if suppliers of replacement parts could be found. Following a substantial rebuild, in which the workshops had to construct the missing parts themselves, the locomotive returned to service on 22 December 2012

About WDP-3A -
The WDP2 later renamed WDP3A was Indian Railways’ first success at creating a high-speed, high performance dedicated diesel passenger service locomotive with “modern” aerodynamic looks and dual cab forward design. Despite the swashbuckling exterior, inside the WDP3A still remains through and through ALCO with the same 3100 hp engine doing duty making it the almost identical brother of the WDM3A and WDG3A. They took the WDM3A, re-geared it, did away with the hood-unit driving structure and replaced it with two driving cabs at either end and extended the body shell all the way to the edge of the superstructure, giving it the “full” look, all the first of its diesel kind. But sadly production was stopped after it was decided to procure newer, more powerful and contemporary locomotives from EMD. A problem with the WDP3A was that it would get uncomfortably hot inside the driving cabin on the radiator side and the locos were nicknamed “toasters” by the loco pilots. The WDP3A is best known as the power for the Trivandrum Rajdhani on the Konkan Railway and are homed at Golden Rock Trichy (GOC) (SR) and Tughlakhabad (TKD) NR sheds. TKD WDM3As are named “Pushpak”. The WDP3A still remains one of IR’s most handsome locomotives.
