A couple of pilgrims take a brief rest from their march to the Hindu Festival being held near Reengus knowing they are not too many miles from their destination. And, while you'd like to think it's the train that draws their attention, in more likelihood it's the couple of photographers, unusual in these parts, who are standing trackside.
The target is captured cresting the rise just to the north-east of Ringas Junction - 4,500hp Indian Railways WDG-4 locomotive no. 12412 hauling a long trainload of washed coal in sheeted box wagons.
This cross-country route between Phulera via Ringas Junction to Rewari had not long been converted to broad gauge and, in the days of metre-gauge operations, the now abandoned shelter at right would have been used by the level crossing keeper. During gauge conversion the level crossing was removed and a single track underpass built to handle the intermittent road traffic.
Through the heat haze in the distance can be seen a few more coloured flags. It's tradition, for those who are able, to make their way to the festival on foot and there are many tents by the side of the road en route where the locals take it upon themselves to provide sustenance and a seat for the weary travellers, and indeed anyone else who cares to stop by (including ourselves).
Thanks to www.flickr.com/photos/lickeybanker/ from whom I've pilfered train and operational details!

The First WDP-4B loco in the 40xxx series. It was hauling the Rewari Passenger. Shot at NZM.

TKD based Alco WDM3A 14136 is waiting for the home signal to clear and allow clearance towards Rewari whilst working train 14029 01h55 Sri Ganga Nagar to Delhi Jn passenger via Bathinda, Hisar and Rewari on 15th December 2024
Erode WDM-3D #11295 led 22986 Delhi Sarai Rohilla - Udaipur City Rajasthan Humsafar Express heading towards Rewari.
Captured a rare moment in rail history! Steam locomotive WP #7000, affectionately known as "Ashoka," gracefully chugged through Shahbad (SMDP) on a foggy winter morning, heading towards Rewari with the enchanting Steam Heritage Express.
Earlier, I focused on capturing 14088 JSM DLI Runicha featuring the stunning 20055 TKD Bleed Blue WDP4. As I was about to wrap up my railfanning day, satisfied with the iconic TKD livery shots, I was surprised. A mysterious greyish-black train appeared in the distance from Palam, and my initial guess of "Alco" was quickly dismissed as I zoomed in through the camera lens.
To my sheer amazement, it was a live steam locomotive! I promptly prepared my phone and camera, positioning myself for the perfect shot. Ashoka's rhythmic chugging, melodious whistle, and leisurely pace garnered attention from onlookers as it gracefully passed through SMDP.
This unexpected encounter marked one of the greatest captures of my railfanning journey. This is the essence of steam heritage—a nostalgic reminder of a bygone era. Steam trains exude a majestic charm uniquely their own. Let's hope the Indian Railways runs these steam beauties more frequently, coupled with effective marketing and affordable pricing, allowing more enthusiasts to relish this magical experience.

Sabarmati's OG Cab beast storms through Shahabad Mohammarpur with Jaisalmer - Delhi Jn Runicha in tow.
These OG cabs, with their rugged design, give the locomotive a distinct American look. Today, 14087/88 Runicha Express runs under electric traction.
It's 7.38am and in the soft early-morning sunlight Alco YDM-4 no. 6637 approaches Ringas Junction with the 6.20am Sikar Junction - Jaipur (train O2088).
At the time, the Sikar - Jaipur route was a small pocket of metre-gauge activity in a wide area already converted to broad gauge. In fact, to the right of where I'm stood, part of the station was already running BG trains with the platform raised and resurfaced accordingly.
The over-bridge in the background carries National Highway 11, a 429 mile long road linking Jaisalmer (Rajasthan) and Rewari (Haryana). Tourists might be unwittingly familiar with it to seeing as it's the main highway between Agra and Jaipur.

Indian double stack! WDG4G 49021 at Rewari with a container train for the Delhi area on 15th December 2024. A GE design, the WDG4Gs are loosely based on the Evolution Series. The fleet will eventually number 700 of these 4500 hp machines plus, (somewhat controversially considering none of the USA Class 1 railroads had any luck with them), 300 copies of a 6000 hp design. The first 50 WDG4Gs - including 49021 - were constructed at the famous GE plant in Erie, PA USA. The remainder are under construction by the Diesel Locomotive Factory, Marhowrah in Bihar, Northern India. Whether ordering 1000 diesel locomotives whilst pursuing a programme of 100% electrified rail network was sensible is debatable, but as recent events have shown, if you have a war with the neighbours then perhaps some resilience isn’t a bad idea.
Indian Railways had a fleet of just 69 of the WDP1 Bo-Bo design locomotives. In a fleet of literally thousands of V16 powered Alcos, these were a bit of an 12 cylinder powered anomaly. Supposedly designed to be used in pairs on express passenger trains, they reportedly suffered from bad oscillation at high speeds and apart from a few expresses around Bhimavaram were never paired up regularly. (Apart from a short spell in top & tailed formation on the Delhi - Rewari route before someone writes in).
They were based at Tuglakhabad (Delhi) and Vijayawada. The Tuglakhabad allocation monopolised passenger trains in Harayana and the Punjab. The onset of electrification and timetable reductions in the Covid era saw all the un-refurbished examples stored. 15021R was one of the luckier ones having been rebuilt at Patiala, now literally building its own gallows by working an electrification train. The passenger trains formerly worked by these machines in Northern India are now in the hands of pairs of WDG3As / WDM3As or electric locos. Giddarbaha, 31st January 2023.
Huge crowd waits at Rewari as the 24-coach Ashram express led by BGKT WDP-4 #20097 pulls in. Note the roof platers getting down.
Given the size of the thing, it’s hard to believe this is a metre gauge steam loco! There were over 1000 YGs produced. YG 3415 is seen here at Rewari and apparently is operational, although with gauge conversion there’s nowhere left to run it these days! 23rd March 2025

Indian Railways WDP-1 'Baldie' 15018 heads away from Rewari Junction at the start of its journey to Delhi in December 2016. The veteran Tughlakabad [TKD] based Alco was working the 54310 RE-DLI Passenger service, a journey of 82 kms with 15 intermediate stops. The IRFCA database lists this locomotive as withdrawn and listed for auction sale in September 2023.

Star exhibit at the Rewari steam shed during my visit was TKD WDM3A 16664! 😀 I’ve no idea why this was here. I’m guessing with so little work for diesels in general these days - especially Alcos - IR are in no hurry for it back.
TKD WDM-3A #16305 heads towards Shahabad Mohammadpur with 54417 Delhi - Rewari Passenger for its next hault.

Indian Railways WDG-4 12252 of Sabamati [SBI] shed eases a lenghty (50 BLCBM flats) double stack Adani Logistics container train round the tight curve on the approach to Phulera. The train had travelled south west from Rewari Junction via Ringas Junction enabling it to avoid the busier and more circuitous route through Alwar and Jaipur.
