This is the first time I think I have ever seen a squirrel resting. I was trying to be ultra stealthy and I don't think he knew I was there.
Not much is left in the ghost town Lake Valley in New Mexico. But this rusty automobile rests peacefully in the desert in what was once the center of a town of several thousand people.
i found this stem of clover in a puddle. it’s a reminder that simple things can be elegant, beautiful, and even poignant. it’s also a reminder to pause. there’s no need to “do it all.” there’s no urgency. in this moment, there’s space to breathe and be.
This Phoebe took a quick rest break from, hunting bugs in mid-air, and allowed us to capture this photo. We thought the lighting was just right. The Black Phoebe is a dapper flycatcher of the western U.S. with a sooty black body and crisp white belly. They sit in the open on low perches to scan for insects, often keeping up a running series of shrill chirps.

Over the last couple of days we've had a major hatching of dragonflies and they've filled the skies with their darting flight.
They are also landing and resting on our garden plants. This is a juvenile Common Green Darner and it modeled nicely for me :)

These moments of respite are so important to our ability to keep going. So many people run into burnout because they fail to realize this important necessity. This should not be as unfamiliar of a concept as it is, but here in the west we are so work driven, task oriented, and we are lured in by the opportunity to make another dollar and advance our social status. It may seem like wasted time to rest when we could instead be working, earning more money, going on more adventures, hanging out with more friends, and so the list could go on forever. Yet there is a reason that God ordained for there to be a day of rest once every week. He did not create us to just do work all of our lives, although work is certainly a part of what He created us to do. Moreover He created us to know Him, to spend time with Him, and to rightfully enjoy the many blessings that He has given us. My challenge to you is that if you recognize that you are not taking time to rest, do so. Do not fill this time with a whole laundry list of things to do, but rather sit and be with the Father and see what He teaches you and watch as He will refresh your soul in this time!
A bull elk takes a break from the hustle and bustle of the previous week, (or longer), of chasing cows during the fall rut.
The Pacific Black Duck (Anas superciliosa), seen here, is a dabbling duck found in much of Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, and many islands in the southwestern Pacific. In New Zealand it is known as the Grey Duck.
I watched this duck at a distance for quite some time, mostly it rested with its bill tucked in its feathers. Then without warning it sprang into action, had a big stretch and promptly went back to sleep. My patience was rewarded with this and several similar shots.

Black-tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus)
"The black-tailed deer is one of nine subspecies of the mule deer. It was first recorded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-06.
Black-tailed deer live in the temperate coniferous forests along the Pacific coast. These forests are characterized by cool temperatures and lots of rain, but an overall mild climate. Black-tailed deer do not therefore migrate in response to seasonal changes, unlike some of the other mule deer subspecies. Instead, black-tailed deer often spend their entire life in the same general area.
Black-tailed deer can be distinguished from mule deer by their larger tail, the back of which is completely covered with black or dark brown hairs. Mule deer have smaller tails in which only the tip is covered with black hairs. Black-tailed deer are generally smaller than mule deer."

A katydid stopped for a rest on my front door. This is SOOC except for some minimal cropping. He stayed on the door for at least 20 minutes while people went in and out of the door at least three times.

Le plus dur : descendre pieds nus (... le reste aussi quasiment ...) jusqu'à la rivière sur une pente glacée ...
