San Diego Fashion Week 2014 - SS 15 Collection - Responsive Textiles Collection
Responsive Textiles was created in relation to the idea that clothes are a second skin to the body, and therefore they should be as unique and human as we are. This is why designer and founder, Kristine Rodriguez, personally creates the fabric and structure of every garment by hand. Each piece is a product of labor, love and conceptual thought. As Rodriguez explains, “My priority is exploring a concept and telling its story through the knitted stitch. The garments that result are RESPONSIVE to this goal.” Her line of woven knits for women will be launching the S/S 2015 line on the runway at FWSD.

Developed in the late 1960s, the Battelle/Talaris property is architecturally significant to the region as a fine example of modern architecture. The Battelle campus concept, landscape and building design represents an important example of a mid-century move toward environmentally responsive design. David Hoedemaker of NBBJ was the project architect. He attributes the influence of Eero Saarinen with whom he previously worked, as well as Paul Kirk and AI Bumgardner on his own work. Richard Haag, the award-winning designer of Gasworks Park, designed the landscape. The property is also significant in that it served as the Seattle campus of Battelle Memorial Institute, a science and technology development company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. By 2001, Battelle outgrew the location, which subsequently served as home to the Talaris Institute, an organization dedicated to early childhood development. In 2012, the property changed hands once again and the new owner presented plans for redevelopment. The preferred development scenario retains many features of the designed landscape, but indicates several key buildings are being considered for demolition, leaving only the foundations. Concerned with losing the site’s delicate balance of the built and natural environment, a group of concerned neighbors formed Friends of Battelle/Talaris. The Friends have engaged with the owners and other neighborhood stakeholders to support a plan for the site that meets the owner’s development needs while retaining the historic integrity of the resource.

UNESCO, with the Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), financial support from the Government of Japan, and in partnership with the Institut de la Francophonie pour l'Education et la Formation (IFEF), the International Center for Girls' and Women's Education in Africa of the African Union (AU/CIEFFA), the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) and Microsoft, is organizing a regional training of trainers for representatives from the Ministry of Education and teacher trainers on gender-responsive STEM education in order to engage, inspire and empower more girls and women to undertake STEM studies.
The training adopts a theory-to-practice approach, drawing on UNESCO’s Cracking the Code report, the US Mission to UNESCO’s TeachHer initiative, and other resources and programme experience. The modules explore the situation related to STEM education in Africa, gender-responsive STEM education, gender-responsive pedagogy, gender-responsive teaching resources, and ICT integration in STEM education. The methodologies employ a mixture of interactive pedagogy including guided group activities, role play, group-based problem-solving and field visits, to build on participants’ facilitation skills.
The training of trainers is currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya (3-14 September 2018). The regional training will take place from 22-26 October with national teams of 6 to 8 people from 12 French-speaking African countries (Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Comores, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, and Senegal). The group project designed for the theoretical discussions, workshops and lectures section of the
festival can be considered as an artistic performance and intervention. By penetrating into the cityscape
of Ijevan, we wish to shape a new attitude towards public art. The event is aimed at turning the outlook
of city resident inwards, towards the space they are living in by raising public issues which heretofore
have been invisible.
Inwards is a group event; the projects are autonomous and based on personal experiences of the
authors.
