Frames of Reference was a response to my research experiences as a digital texture painter - thoughts translated through the acrylic medium and onto canvas. Each painting plays with observation and the act of observing. Colors and tactile textures are presented out of context in sqaures of equal size, inviting the viewer to free associate.

Getting to the end of the experimental stage of the module I decided that I wanted to try and incorporate as many different materials and processes as possible into my final piece. I tested out using different materials in this piece of work, inspired by photos I had taken, incorporating ink, pen and collaged paper. I first painted the green ink border, then added in the brown paper collaged structures. I was then left with large areas of blank space and so chose to add in some more buildings in the background and add in colour to the trees in the middle of the page, using a felt tip. Overall this is one of my favourite pieces of work as it incorporates different materials and processes, showing detailed and empty space.
My final response was also on a 100x150 cm canvas (identical to my second response) as I felt like bigger canvases were the most effective for both my painting style and my flower compositions as I wanted the flowers to be striking as a foreground feature. I was extremely pleased with the outcome of this response; I think it is the best canvas I have completed because it conveys my development over the project, as well as the strength of the composition. I like that the colour intensity and saturation increases the further forward the plant is, as this gives it realistic depth and natural appearance. I think the background is sophisticated due to the little purple flowers and abundant green leaves. I feel that there is the right amount of background detail given, so it is not distracting from the flowers in the foreground. It is effective that the background is painted with light amounts of paint, as this gives it delicacy. I am entirely satisfied with the detail of the flowers as I believe they look realistic, which I achieved by enhancing the dark and light points of the flowers to make them appear three dimensional. I believe that the use of harmonious warm tones with a juxtaposing background gives the most visually-pleasing finish to the painting.
