My Time with Otomo

In May 2021, I received a request from the Belgian label Aguirrecords asking whether I could provide several photographs for the cover of a new vinyl edition of the ONJO CD Out to Lunch. Originally, they asked for 20 pictures, but by November that number was reduced to just two, which they had already incorporated into a proposed cover layout. For that, they now required high-quality originals for printing.

That set off a large-scale search: since I hadn’t touched my negatives for years, I now realized that the negatives I keep with me here in South Korea all date exclusively from 2001 and 2002. These cover the beginning of my time in Korea with Korean musicians, my several-day stay at the Festival Beyond Intelligence (FBI) in Osaka in 2002—where I met many Japanese musicians—and my artistic works from that time. Starting in 2003, I switched to digital photography, but unfortunately, that large mass of older digital shots is poorly catalogued, which makes searching extremely tedious.

One of the requested photos actually dates back to the previous century, and that reminded me that all my negatives up until the millennium are stored in my Frankfurt archive—which, due to the pandemic, I was not likely to be able to access any time soon.

Apparently, vinyl products with carefully designed visuals like these are especially aimed at collectors. At the beginning of 2020, for example, the French label Le Narthecophore had already put out a vinyl edition of the Peking Opera by the Goebbels/Harth duo from 1984, paired with Otomo’s group Ground Zero, which had sampled from our Peking Opera adaptation on their 1996 CD.

How did it come to that? When Otomo and I worked together for five years in the 2000s in various of his ensembles, he confessed to me—still with glowing eyes—how much of a fan he had been in the 1980s of the Goebbels/Harth records. And when Heiner Goebbels asked me, around 2007, if I’d like to play a “duo revival” with him in a large theater in Bologna, half of Otomo’s jazz ensemble was moved to tears at the very thought and immediately wished for a duo performance in Japan. I could directly sense the reverence of my Japanese colleagues, who documented on their own records how deeply they had been inspired by Hanns Eisler, especially by Über den Selbstmord.

When Heiner called me in the mid-90s to say that a very friendly (to me unknown) Japanese musician was in Frankfurt to visit us, I had no inkling of this admiration. We had occasionally received inquiries from younger musicians about our past duo productions—for instance from the loosely organized group Arbeit (Christoph Korn, Oliver Augst, Marcel Daemgen), who in the 90s saw themselves as operating in somewhat similar political waters. So it was in 1996 that I welcomed Otomo in my home in the Holzhausenviertel district, where, over tea, he shyly and modestly told me that he intended to sample some of the duo’s material with his group, and asked whether I would agree. I did—and only asked in return to take a photo of him, since back then, in the apartment I shared with my Korean wife, Soonjoo Yi, I used to photograph all our guests for our guestbook. Today, Aguirrecords is thrilled to have a picture of the young Otomo in analog form for the planned LP. And it is precisely this negative that I am now missing!

Later that same year, 1996, on Chris Cutler’s Recommended Records, Otomo’s group Ground Zero released their version of the Peking Opera, including samples from the Goebbels/Harth duo, and in the years that followed it made them internationally famous in the scene.

By 2003, my wife and I had extended to Seoul (while keeping our base in Frankfurt). Otomo gave a concert there with Sachiko M—his wife, who also appears on the Ground Zero album covers. I attended to see them again. During our happy reunion after the show, I mentioned that I would be active in Asia for the foreseeable future. Otomo immediately offered me a spot in his New Jazz Quintet, since his tenor saxophonist, Naruyoshi Kikuchi, wanted to strike out on his own. So it was done: in February 2004 I played my first concert as an official member at the Pit Inn in Tokyo, and by July we were touring Europe. It was a new and exciting experience for me, and altogether we ended up doing perhaps five tours from Asia to Europe, also with the expanded orchestra ONJO, which at the time was sometimes hailed as “the best band in the world.”

At the end of the last tour, in 2007, tensions emerged between the alto saxophonist Kenta Tsugami and me. He suddenly accused me of disturbing his solo. From my point of view, I had been providing supportive background sounds—spaces that had always been permitted. After the final concert in Zagreb, he confronted me with this backstage, and when I refused to back down, he even threatened to hit me. I made sure the door remained open so that some other band members could overhear. After that incident, both of us were dismissed. Otomo apparently played another two ONJO gigs in Europe with other musicians, and that was the end. Later, our drummer Yoshigaki Yasuhiro kindly informed me that I was not at fault and that Kenta had continued to behave strangely and aggressively in Tokyo, though no one could figure out why. Perhaps he had just separated from his wife.

At the end of 2007, Otomo put together a new band, Invisible Song, beginning with the studio recording of the CD Sora, for which he invited me again. With this lineup, we toured Europe in 2008. During that tour, Otomo seemed utterly exhausted, especially toward the end. It was said he was having liver problems. Otomo didn’t drink alcohol, but he did enjoy good food. Yet from that point on, he scaled down his activities, and larger group tours came to an end.

By 2007, I had also founded two new groups in Europe: the trio Taste Tribes and in Rome the quartet 7k Oaks. In 2009, I invited the American composer Carl Stone, who lived in Japan, for a duo project Gift Fig (2009–2014), which we briefly expanded into a quartet (The Expats) in 2010.

And now, today, a message arrives from Japan saying that after all, no photos are wanted for a new edition of the ONJO LP Out to Lunch …

Serious Request is a project by Dutch radio station 3FM in which they collect money for projects of the Red Cross. Three DJs live in a house of glass for six days (5 days in 2004) and was located at the Neude in Utrecht the first years without anything to eat in this whole period. In 2007, the Glass house was located on 't Plein in The Hague. In 2008 the Glass House could be found on de Grote Markt in Breda. Meanwhile they play songs requested by people who listen to the radio and those who take time to visit the house. With the requests the listeners donate a certain amount of money that is reliable for the person(s) in question. Furthermore lots of notable Dutch people are helping the project outside the house. There is also an auction held every year. The project was held for the first time in 2004 and has been held every year since and takes place during the week prior to Christmas. Each year one track is adopted by the DJs as the "goed gevoel plaat" ("feel good track"). These tracks are seen as the unofficial theme songs and were not chosen before the project started, but were automatically created as the week progressed.

I went into the stationery store for a work-related purchase. I was there for about 2 minutes. When I went in, I immediately made eye contact with the sales rep, asked for the particular item, and had her lead me directly to the correct location. As we turned to go to the till, these caught my eye, and I was unable to leave the stationery store without making an impulse buy!

Monitor M33

Built in 1915 at the request of Winston Churchill, First Lord of the Admiralty, and Lord Jackie Fisher, the First Sea Lord, after the successful performances of large river monitors, or ‘gunboats’ off the Belgian coast during the early stages of the war. The M33 is one of only two British warships to have survived from the Great War of 1914-18.

As part of a major shipbuilding effort undertaken at the time, a fleet of shallow drafted coastal bombardment vessels, known as ‘monitors’, the M33 was ordered from Harland and Wolff in Belfast, who subsequently constructed it at the neighbouring shipyard of Workman Clark Limited.

With a total of 35 similar vessels ordered, and varying in size from the 8,000 ton Erebus armed with 15 inch guns, to the likes of the 580 ton M33 with six-inch guns, the speed at which these vessels were built was a considerable achievement. Ordered on March 15, 1915, the M33 was one of a group of five other monitors to be fitted with twin six-inch guns. She was launched in late May and accepted into service on the 24th June.

Coen en Sander probeerden tijdens 3FM Zeroes Request de eerste groep Idols kandidaten en juryleden weer bij elkaar te brengen. Dat lukte.... niet helemaal. Maar al met al een goeie score!
