This guy has his mouth opened for minutes. Look at those teeth, so white and sharp and deadly

I took this shot on my old Panasonic Lumix bridge camera a few years ago - but I am still pleased with how it turned out, it's one of my favourite shots...

I took my students to the Metro Toronto zoo today and took lots of photos. Here is the first of many to be loaded.

Meet Zazoo, my 4-year-old female leopard gecko who came to live with me on 8th April :) She's a friendly little character!

A couple of garter snakes in the dead leaves of my Siberian iris at the pond

Big Momma was the best damn garter snake in the world. She was big, calm, tame and utterly spectacular. She was also tremendously prolific, giving birth to two litters (26 and 42 babies, respectively) in the two years I had her.

She was gravid when I took this photograph on May 12, 2002. By the time she gave birth on June 13, the liver tumour -- a result of her advanced age -- had become much more obvious. She died later that fall.

One of my favourite snakes. Ever.

Daboia russelii. This highly venomous snake is native to South Asia. It is one of the leading causes of snakebite fatalities in the world, as it lives in heavily populated areas where medical treatment is poor. The venom is very complex in that it contains coagulant, hemorrhagic, and neurotoxic properties. In some snakebite victims, the venom affects the pituitary gland and can reverse puberty. Some snakebite survivors even suffer complications years after the bite. However components in the venom are proving to be very useful in drugs to treat human ailments.
