The American Crocodile is the largest and most widespread of the New World crocdilians with a range from northern South America, Central America, the Caribbean and the southern-most tip of Florida. Water temperature tolerance is the limiting factor in distribution for this saltwater tolerant species.

A juvenile Reticulated Python which a farmer had found in his house. He caught it and put it into this cage to wait until a wildlife official could arrive to re-release it into an area where it was less likely to come into conflict with people.

Look at the cute face! These are a Threatened species in Illinois. I was at a conference in northern Illinois a few years back and we got to visit a site where they are doing research on these cool (and super cute) turtles. Emydoidea blandingii, Emydidae. Northern Illinois, Summer 2010.

This turtle was crossing the road.

This one worked out fine. Nice look in its eyes, sharp, nice texture on the skin.

This old gal came through the winter in very good shape. She is a very large one also. Snapping turtles are known to forage under the ice during the winter months.

Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) is one of five tortoise species traditionally placed in the genus Testudo, which also includes the well-known Marginated tortoise (T. marginata), Greek tortoise (T. graeca), and Russian tortoise (T. horsfieldii), for example. Three subspecies are known: the Western Hermann's tortoise (T. h. hermanni), the Eastern Hermann's tortoise (T. h. boettgeri) and Dalmatian tortoise (T. h. hercegovinensis). Testudo hermanni can be found throughout southern Europe. The western population (hermanni) is found in eastern Spain, southern France, the Baleares islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, south and central Italy (Tuscany). The eastern population (boettgeri) inhabits Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, and Greece, while hercegovinensis populates coasts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro

 

La Tartaruga di terra o Tartaruga di Hermann (Testudo hermanni) è un rettile appartenente all'ordine delle testuggini.Specie paleartica, è presente esclusivamente nell'Europa meridionale. L'areale si estende dalla Spagna alla Romania includendo le isole maggiori del Mediterraneo. La Testudo hermanni e l'Emys orbicularis sono le sole specie autoctone italiane, la Testudo graeca e la Testudo marginata sono specie introdotte a più riprese in tempi storici.Il nome Hermanni è in onore del medico e naturalista francese Jean Hermann (1738-1800.Le dimensioni del carapace degli adulti variano da un minimo di 13 cm nei maschi della Puglia a un massimo di 24 cm nelle femmine della Sardegna. La colorazione di base del carapace è giallo-aranciato con diffuse macchie nere, molto estese sul piastrone. La sutura pettorale è, generalmente, minore della femorale (blu nella foto). Altre caratteristiche sono: la pigmentazione gialla delle scaglie sotto gli occhi, assente negli esemplari adulti di T. h. boettgeri, e un caratteristico disegno sullo scuto sopracaudale a forma di toppa di serratura. Questa sottospecie è diffusa in Francia, Italia, Spagna continentale e Baleari. Prima comune, ora sempre più rara in Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Lazio, Liguria, Molise, Puglia, Sardegna, Sicilia, Toscana e Umbria. La sua presenza è segnalata nelle isole dell'Arcipelago Toscano (Capraia, Elba, Giglio, Montecristo), dell'Asinara, Pantelleria e Pianosa.
