The Merville Gun Battery was a coastal fortification in Normandy, France, in use as part of the Germans' Atlantic Wall built to defend continental Europe from Allied invasion. It was a particularly heavily fortified position and one of the first places to be attacked by Allied forces during the D-Day Normandy Landings. The 9th Parachute Battalion (part of the 3rd Parachute Brigade attached to 6th Airborne Division) was given the objective of destroying the battery under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Terence Otway. However, when the battalion arrived over Normandy, their parachute descent was dispersed over a large area, so instead of over 600 men, only 150 with no heavy weapons or equipment arrived at the battalion assembly point. Regardless, they pressed home their attack and succeeded in capturing the battery.

Tried to replicate a piece of equipment using what I had available. Turned out ok, all things considered. Started with a piece of clear plastic, the type that most toys come packaged in, cut out my design (based mostly off the Sideshow Snake Eyes weapon) from 3 strips then glued them together to get the desired thickness. Filed all the edges down. Two coats of black acylic paint (need to water it down next time) then drybrushed a dark silver for the metal look. The handle was wrapped with thinly cut grip tape used for hocky.

The Campania in the Roman era exhibition recently opened on the ground floor opposite the impressive Farnese collection. The 20 rooms are filled with sculptures and paintings from the 2nd century BC to the 3rd century that decorated public buildings in Naples and southern Italy (including some from Pompeii and Herculaneum).

This is a drawing for replicating an old timber greenhouse in low maintenance and durable aluminium, no mean feat with double doors at each of the 3 gable entries.
This is my pieced quilt replicating the model made by my daughter. She helped me make this by pressing and cutting thread for me and making sure I didn't mess up the colors! I also cut blocks four times bigger that we will make into a twin size quilt blanket. This was a challenge in that I had to make my own pattern. I spent a lot of time with graph paper before cutting my fabric. This is also my first quilt with all solid fabrics. I decided I really like working with solids - they're cheerful and fun. They reminded me of the quilts I saw online these last couple of weeks from QuiltCon. Thanks for the fun challenges, Kim!

Design Replicated from the General U.S. Grant Bridge Fullerton - Portsmouth General Plan. The Dravo Construction Comapny Designers and Building Engineers Works Department. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Approved Dec. 14, 1926. Drawing No. 17110
Construction of the Ulysses S. Grant Bridge began May 26 and was completed August 27 at the cost of $1,000,000. The Bridge was dedicated August 22, 1927. The Ulysses S. Grant Bridge, eligibal for the National Register of Historic Places, was designed by Roger Robinson and David B. Steinman, 1887-1960, one of America's most respected bridge designers, incorporated unusual engineering feautures into the design to compete with the Cantilevered Truss commonly used on Ohio River crossings. The bid came in 10% below the lowest bid for Cantilever construction. The unique cost saving features included, Rocker Towers, Prefabrication of Cables, Sand filled anchorages and a continuing stiffening of truss. The bridge was fabricated and erected by the Dravo Construction Company with supporting design provided by the J.E. Greiner Company . The Main suspension span measured 700' and the two side spans measured 350'. Two 111' steel towers mounted on concrete piers supported the cables. The upstream and downstream cables consisted of 486 wires each. The Continuous Truss, A Warren Pony with Verticals, measured 14' in depth. The bridge functioned as a toll facility owned and operated by The Portsmouth - Fullerton Bridge Company until 1957 when purchased by the State of Ohio. The family of Ulysses S. Grant was said to have operated a Tannery on the Kentucky side of the Ohio River where Ulysses S. Grant spent summer vacations working as a clerk.
