During the Italian Renaissance, Venice gave birth to an artistic style known as the Venetian School (1450-1600 A.D) that placed importance reflected light and its impact on color. In contrast to the Florentine paintings from the same time period, which focused on linear form, Venetian paintings blended Byzantine and Gothic elements with subtle layering and blending techniques to apply color of a muted vibrancy to more closely mimic colors found in nature.

Color Vibrancy The richness in Venetian color reflected the wealth prominent in Venice during the Renaissance. The dark reds, brilliant blues and muted yellows used in the oil paintings of Venetian School artists such as Jacopo Bellini have both a deepness and transparency meant to reflect light and expose the shades of layered color. Often muted in tone, Venetian colors gradually softened throughout the Renaissance to replicate natural color rather than exaggerated hues.

Layering and Blending Unlike the Florentine masters who began masterpieces by focusing on the linear movement of a composition, the Venetian School artists would begin forming their work with shapes of color painted directly on the canvas. Shades of color were carefully layered and blended to create a subtle shift of hue and tone to define form in place of the severe lines notable in other style movements.

Shadows and Light, A careful consideration of light's impact on color is reflected in the work of the masters of the Venetian School period. Whereas other movements would mimic the actual color of a subject as a whole, Venetian colorists would incorporate the subtle shifts of hue caused by the reflected light on the subject with their unique layering and blending techniques. With the interplay of shadows and light across a subject, traditional Venetian color application suggests form without sharp edges, creating a difficult to achieve sense of depth and realism.

The Senate chamber is housed in the east wing, the oldest section of the Capitol. It serves 40 senators who are elected every four years. The entire legislature meets annually from the second Monday in January to approximately the end of April for 90 calendar days.

Brass columns in Senate ChamberThe massive columns are polished to reveal their bright copper color. The columns were hand-cast in Italy and originally provided air circulation. On the sides of the bases are ornate circular grills, which were designed as air vents. They could be opened to allow hot air to rise to the attic.

In 2005 the Senate chamber underwent extensive renovation. The desks, made from native Kansas wild cherrywood, were returned to their placement in a semicircle that was original to the 1885 period. Marble walkways between the bronze and copper columns and the windows were restored. The Senate chamber also received new carpeting stylistic of the period. It was such a surreal sight to see so much water in the basin, it was such a perfect mirror, that it almost didn't feel real. And to have a sky so full of texture, layers and patches of blue, what a treat to have a sky like that for this one. I am glad that we changed our trip plans again to see this not so often occurrence. I was afraid I would miss out on seeing it.

For some reason, replicated lines appeal to me and when they interact with one another the appeal turns into an obsession.....

Replication

When I walked out my front door this morning on my way to work and saw the beginnings of the beautiful sunrise (thankfully the sun is coming up later these days), I knew exactly where I was going to stop on my way to work.

I drive past this vineyard everyday and have never taken the time to stop and photograph it. Just think of the opportunities I've missed!

The replicated lines of vines worked beautifully to catch the light as the sun peeked over the horizon.

This is also for sale as a canvas print on my website: www.kevinbrownephotography.com

Thank you for looking.

The Castle that isn't a Castle... Wray Castle is a house built in the Victorian Gothic style to replicate a Medieval Castle. Built in 1840 by James Dawson, a wealthy surgeon from Liverpool, as a retreat from the noise and dirt of the city. His wife, Margaret inherited a sizeable fortune from her father's gin, engineering and sugar refining businesses. The house is currently owned by the National trust and is undergoing renovations. Unlike many stately homes, the building is empty, having been cleared and the contents sold off, after the estate passed to a distant cousin of Margaret Dawson.

One of the only artefacts found that is believed to be from Wray, is a family photograph album which was found in a car boot sale in Wales.

"I haven‘t seen a tree in decades and even though I‘ve briefly spotted some wooden planks drifting by on the water surface back when the big wave of 78 hit, I’m starting to forget what it really looks like! We have to keep these memories alive, no matter the cost! If only we would be able to venture out again… I‘d gladly risk my life, if they‘d only let me!"

Another stopping spot on our ATV ride. This lovely woodsy waterfall, ending in a pool of water, reflecting the delightful island of violets, was just so beautiful, that I would love to replicate it on our property! (Large)

Fancied doing another scary Kelly ever since i did "The Ring" so went round the old York museum yesterday with the background shot in mind and set up the lighting today on kelly for the composite.

. . . made from thousands of styrofoam coffee cups glued together facing outwards to form a large continuous and undulating 3D surface. It suggests to me some sort of runaway organic cellular growth. The piece is suspended from the ceiling and is back lit with natural light. Dimensionally, I'd estimate it to occupy a volume of approximately 10m x 5m x 5m so this image only captures a relatively small portion. The piece is by Tara Donovan and is 'Untitled'. Check it out if you get a chance - it is a very impressive and imaginative work of art and, I think, a fascinating photographic subject. Check it out at the Boston Museum of Fine Art.

I love this shot from the film and how it's lit, so I tried to replicate it as best as I could. :)

On twitter today I'll be posting the original pictures I shot and cropped to create this picture. :)

A bit of a crop to highlight the details of the scene. Certainly a fantastic replication of the Naval Ship.

LMS Stanier Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 46233 "Duchess of Sutherland" approaches Twyford station with a Southend to Gloucester "Cathedrals Express" charter. The locomotive has recently had a yellow stripe added to its cabside, replicating the 1960s when this was used to denote that the locomotive was barred from travelling under the overhead electrification wires south of Crewe. It is seen here flouting those rules on the newly electrified Great Western Main Line...

This gatehouse is much like the one that occupied this site in Roman times.

I love this car- the ex-Chris Evans Fiat 126 Abarth 'replica'. Except it's not a replica as a real version was never made. A true one off in a befitting condition.
