The 90 meter (300 ft.) replication of the famous Brooklyn bridge at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

I would say that observations of patterns is my true quest as a nature photographer. I don't look for certain patterns, I just look, and when I see a pattern that strikes me, thats when I pull my camera out of its pouch. The pattern of the Shawnee Hills are observed from the Union County Wildlife Preserve in southern Illinois was duplicated in the clouds hovering above.

A view that would be impossible to replicate today - a westbound CP freight approaching Lobo, viewed from the Denfield Road trestle bridge. Power is SD40 5553 and M-636 4741. The bridge still exists, although tree growth makes photography extremely challenging today!

It was such a surreal sight to see so much water in the basin, it was such a perfect mirror, that it almost didn't feel real. And to have a sky so full of texture, layers and patches of blue, what a treat to have a sky like that for this one. I am glad that we changed our trip plans again to see this not so often occurrence. I was afraid I would miss out on seeing it.

When working on a photograph there is always an element of surprise, an element you can't fully control. I love how that works. Photographing these things is not something you simply do, it's an adventure that rewards with the discoveries made.

This one was planned to be the cover for my "Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy" Lego Star Wars book (shameless plug here). The joke was to replicate an old photograph (from Aug. 2010) with the then new snowtrooper minifigure. I thought it was a fun idea, the deadpan humour in it appealed to me and we decided to give it a go.

I shot many versions of the photograph, some with white background (like in the original), some with blue to add contrast to the monochromatic white. I think I shot couple of hundred frames for this only. But, alas, eventually it didn't work. The element of surprise, the snow, was under too much control, it did what I wanted it to do, yet it didn't: it didn't surprise me. There was not enough "wow" to make it worth the cover.

The joke alone didn't make the cut, it didn't really come through after all.

This would have made a decent cover, I'm sure, but we ended up using the original image, just re-edited from the ground up. I'm really happy with that.

Oneto Tom (detail), 1882 by sculptor Giulio Monteverde (Bistagno 1837- Rome 1917)

This tomb was commissioned by Francesco Oneto, a rich merchant and President of the "Banca Generale". The angel, holding the trumpet of the Universal Judgment with its right hand, offers no consolatory gesture, but seems distant and imperturbable. The sensuality of this statue deeply shocked the contemporaries but enijoyed a greet success as well: it was replicated countless times, both by the artist himself and by his imitators; it can be found in various versions in many cemiteries in Italy, France, Germany, England and in North and South America.

Replication

When I walked out my front door this morning on my way to work and saw the beginnings of the beautiful sunrise (thankfully the sun is coming up later these days), I knew exactly where I was going to stop on my way to work.

I drive past this vineyard everyday and have never taken the time to stop and photograph it. Just think of the opportunities I've missed!

The replicated lines of vines worked beautifully to catch the light as the sun peeked over the horizon.

Photo editing, the way I see it, isn’t about creating fake images. It’s about replicating, or at least approximating, what you really saw at the moment. What no camera can capture.

And sometimes to fix a thing or two that you don't like how it turned out.

Replication of a horse that would have drawn a fire wagon

. . . made from thousands of styrofoam coffee cups glued together facing outwards to form a large continuous and undulating 3D surface. It suggests to me some sort of runaway organic cellular growth. The piece is suspended from the ceiling and is back lit with natural light. Dimensionally, I'd estimate it to occupy a volume of approximately 10m x 5m x 5m so this image only captures a relatively small portion. The piece is by Tara Donovan and is 'Untitled'. Check it out if you get a chance - it is a very impressive and imaginative work of art and, I think, a fascinating photographic subject. Check it out at the Boston Museum of Fine Art.

Fancied doing another scary Kelly ever since i did "The Ring" so went round the old York museum yesterday with the background shot in mind and set up the lighting today on kelly for the composite.

For those who used to watch Stargate you'll remember the silicon based androids...

A bit of a crop to highlight the details of the scene. Certainly a fantastic replication of the Naval Ship.

Eerie lights that emerge in fog. The front of the building and water is 'painted' with one standard torch/flashlight from the right. The backlighting comes from another house as well as some outside lights, the fog just acted as an amazing natural diffuser. Don't think it could be replicated with anything man made.

Messing around yesterday trying to replicate a photo I'd seen elsewhere however I felt that B&W worked better than the colour version I'd seen.

Picture: Loews Portofino

Location: Universal, Orlando

Loews Portofino is a hotel under Loews Group with design inspired by small fishing town named Portofino in Italy.

Portofino (Ligurian: Portofin) is a small Italian fishing village, comune and tourist resort located in the province of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is crowded round its small harbour, is closely associated with Paraggi Beach, which is a few minutes up the coast. Other nearby beaches include Camogli, Chiavari, Lavagna, and Sestri Levante.

History

According to Pliny the Elder, Portofino was founded by the Romans and named Portus Delphini, or Port of the Dolphin, because of the large number of dolphins that inhabited the Tigullian Gulf.

The village is mentioned in a diploma from 986 by Adelaide of Italy, which assigned it to the nearby Abbey of San Fruttoso di Capodimonte. In 1171, together with the neighbouring Santa Margherita Ligure, it was included in Rapallo's commune jurisdiction. After 1229 it was part of the Republic of Genoa. The town's natural harbour supported a fleet of fishing boats, but was somewhat too cramped to provide more than a temporary safe haven for the growing merchant marine of the Republic of Genoa.

In 1409 Portofino was sold to the Republic of Florence by Charles VI of France, but when the latter was ousted from Genoa the Florentine gave it back. In the 15th century it was a fief of families such as the Fieschi, Spinola, Adorno and Doria.

In 1815 it became part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and, from 1861, of the unified Kingdom of Italy.

In the late 19th century, first British, then other Northern European aristocratic tourists began to visit Portofino, which they reached by horse and cart from Santa Margherita Ligure. Aubrey Herbert was one of the more famous Englishmen to maintain a villa at Portofino. Eventually more expatriates built expensive vacation houses, and by 1950 tourism had supplanted fishing as the town's chief industry, and the waterfront was a continuous ring of restaurants and cafés.

[edit]Main sights

Statue of Christ of the Abyss, put underwater on August 29, 1954 in the small bay at a depth of 17 metres. This statue was placed to protect fishermen and scuba divers and in memory of Duilio Marcante. Sculpted by Guido Galletti, it represents a benedictory Christ who is looking up towards the sky with open arms as a sign of peace.

Castello Brown (16th century).

Church of St. Martin (Divo Martino, 12th century).

Church of St. George, housing some saints' relics.

Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta, in Gothic style.

[edit]Other

Portofino has inspired a re-creation of the sea side town around the harbour at Tokyo DisneySea in Chiba, Japan, a full scale replication, in authentic detail at the Portofino Bay at Universal Orlando Resort in Orlando, USA, which opened in September 1999.

Portofino also featured on Top Gear in Episode 5, Series 12 where Richard Hammond, in a Ferrari Daytona raced James May in a carbon fibre powerboat from Portofino to St Tropez.

Portofino is the eponym of Frank Schaeffer's Portofino: A Novel (1992). It was the first of Schaeffer's Calvin Becker Trilogy.[2]
