The Spencer Repeating Rifle was a revolutionary weapon when it was introduced to the Union forces during the Civil War. Instead of the single shot muzzle-loaders used by the troops, the Spencer was breech-loaded & could fire seven shots in less than 12 seconds before reloading.
This example bears the serial number #1081 - which identifies it as one of the Spencers (Serial Nos. #1000 to #2050) issued to the 5th Michigan Cavalry just prior to the battle of Gettysburg in 1863. In that action, the Michigan Brigade (1st. 5th. 6th, & 7th. Mich. Cavalry) was commanded by Brigadier General George A. Custer.
There is a partial initial "T/" carved into the stock, but we do not know the soldier(s) who used this weapon. We do know that it would have seen action at the East Cavalry Field at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 when Custer's troops, including his dismounted 5th Michigan Cavalry, stopped the advance of J. E. B. Stuart's Confederate cavalry. It is widely believed that the Spencer played a crucial part in this victory & thus the overall Union victory at Gettysburg..

Ya'll know how much I love clouds! I know, I know. I have a shot quite similar to this (or 2 or 3). But I can't help myself. We worked rural territory today and the skies put on quite a show. All I had with me was my phone-cam. Fun to edit though!
