Rendering test with V-Ray in Sketch-Up. Any suggestion on how to improve the lighting? It doesn't seem quite right for some reason.
The render coat is now complete. It is a silicone-based layer which is flexible to allow for minor movement in the structure over time. It is also self-coloured so should never need painting.

I have been told to set the tile size to 256 when rendering with my GPUs as this gives the quickest result, so I decided to experiment. This is what I found.
The picture is a floor and three pieces of wall. All are just planes with simple procedural textures on them. The floor also uses a grid produced in GIMP added as an image texture and used as a displacement, to give the effect of tiles.
Rendered to 1920x1080 (100%), 100 samples with the "Border" checked box ticked so that only elements within the camera shot are actually rendered. The following are the render times with square tiles.
16x16: 6 mins 29.45 secs
32x32: 1 min 54.75 secs
64x64 (default): 36.47 secs
128x128: 17.50 secs
256x256: 14.73 secs
512x512: 14.65 secs
1024x1024: 1 min 38.18 secs.
I then wondered if somewhere between the 256 and 512 sized squares would be quicker, so I went straight down the middle for a 384 pixel square.
384x384: 14.38 secs.
I am sure someone could explain the differences but I am now wondering whether the recommendation of using a 256 pixel square tile was calculated or arrived at by trial and error.
I also don't know whether the differences would be similar in a much more complex render, in which case the difference between 256 and 384 might be marked.
