I just thought it looked cool ^_^

During a recent field trip to Death Valley we camped in a remote wilderness area outside the main touristic area. It was beautiful to go to bed under a silent, star-studded sky, and it was beautiful (even if quite cold) to wake up to the colors of dawn. While other members of the party had boxed or traditional American breakfast (I can't eat steak or eggs in the morning, but I confess to have a weakness for bacon), I had a "home moment": back in Los Angeles, I had prepared a few raviole, which are a very simple kind of cookie, typical of the city of Bologna, made with flour, eggs, sugar and filled with jam. I had some coffee and milk with me, so I poured them in a mug to make a caffelatte and enjoyed dunking my raviole while the sun was rising on the horizon. For a moment, while the bright band of light on the mountains was getting closer and closer, I was back with my family, around the kitchen table.

I somehow doubt that this old Morris Oxford (c 1954) had anything to do with the woodlines, but it was a nice photo opportunity to finish the trip. Just a few kilometres up the road we would hit the bitumen where we would turn right (west) for the 63km run to Norseman.

ZoomCharts at DevClub.lv: Developing a Javascript SDK

On January 15, 2015, ZoomCharts Co-Founder and CTO Viesturs Zariņš presented at DevClub.lv - a community of Latvian IT specialists that gather monthly and host free talks, presentations, and events to allow the local IT community to share knowledge, network, and communicate. Zariņš discussed the unique challenges faced in developing JavaScript SDK.

Here is a brief overview of his PowerPoint presentation on ZoomCharts, the world’s most interactive data visualization software that will support all your data presentation needs with incredible speed.

What is ZoomCharts?

What defines ZoomCharts advanced data visualization software? It is NOT another HTML5 charts library. It is:

- Interactive

- Fast

- Touch enabled

- Supports big data

A long time ago

DOS 6.2 allowed for:

- 320x240x8bpp

- Direct access to pixels on screen

- Assembler for performance

Today, the Web has finally caught up in the graphics department. Now, we have access to:

- Multiple browsers and rendering technologies

- Multiple resolutions

- Performance that varies by browser and device

Development setup:

- We write in JavaScript

- Commit to GitHub

- Build system in JavaScript

- Debug in Chrome

- Run automated tests

- Like WebStorm (and Vim)

Graphics:

Canvas (fast)

SVG (slow)

WebGL (>50%)

Interactive animations:

Zoom in and out of the graph, drag and drop data, all with your mouse or trackpad.

Graceful degradation:

High FPS (frames per second) lets you scale graphics with low image degradation.

Third party libraries:

- Raphael

- Hammer.js

- Leaflet

- Moment.js

Challenges:

- Responsive design: layouts can shift and look nice on desktop screens vs. not so nice on vertical, mobile screens

- Big screen resolutions: uses devicePixelRatio for sharp rendering, but no hardware acceleration beyond 2048x2048

- Safari compatibility: with 100% CPU, input events are blocked and browser locks up; strange code offers fixes

- HTML on canvas: DOM is slow; basic HTML markup must be parsed and rendered manually; text caching helps

Support:

- Process: TrialSupportBuy

- 1 day issue resolution

- #1 Tell me what I did wrong

- #2 Can you do…

Testing:

- Automated tests on every GIT push

Automatically:

- Compare images

- Record performance

- View errors in console

Interactive testing:

- Next step: record and playback

BrowserStack:

- Interactive mode

- Automated: Selenium API

Debugging:

Chrome Developer tools (F12)

- Debugging

- Profiling

- Timeline

Remote debugging available: developer.chrome.com/devtools/docs/remote-debugging

Future:

- More charts

- Extension API

- Memory allocation tracking

- WebGL

We are looking for statically-typed language:

- Error checking

- Performance

- Superior minification

- Easy to write and read

- Easy to call from JS

Building

Custom build script:

- Compile

- Minify

- Extract documentation

- Embed customer data

Visiting the Ghost Town

Day eighty-two of The 100 Day Project for 2021.

Yesterday's drawing is a bit wonky.

Just like life, eh?

Yesterday was calmer. Flat but calm after an emotional early morning.

Working for myself has many advantages. Amongst others, if I need to take time out for self-care, I can. And I don't need to explain it to anyone. I don't need to justify it. Excuse it. Or have an awkward personal conversation with someone I know doesn't care about me beyond the service I provide, the work I do.

I did some paid work yesterday, but I didn't have to drag a tired, emotional wreck to the desk first thing. I didn't have to worry about my manager grilling me for logging on half a second late.

I don't miss that kind of working environment. Where your bum being on a seat and fitting your real life into strict time schedules is rated higher than the work you deliver or the care you take in your job.

Let's not even start on the bullying, chauvinism, sexism and racism (the last aimed at others, not me) endured within working hours in many of my past roles. I don't miss those things at all.

So yesterday I worked as much as I could manage. Outside of that, I looked after my heart and my mind.

I winced to see damage to my youngest avocado plant today. I can only presume it was caused by the candle I lit close (but not that close) the night before to stave off the darkness of the power outage.

Later in the day, I drew my old-school Apple remote that, unfortunately, no longer works with any of my devices.

I used a 4H pencil for the initial sketch, then overdrew with a B pencil for the darker elements and shading, and an HB pencil for the rest of the outline.

Despite sketching it in plenty of time to post before midnight, I prioritised editing prospective photos for the next instalment of my long-overdue Love letters to London series.

As much as I enjoy partaking in The 100 Day Project, it can become a bit all-consuming. Especially while working part or full-time.

When I signed up for this year's project, I didn't have many commitments. So that, and other new projects, like my 'Love letters...' were no big deal to manage. But on top of paid work and life right now, it was probably a bit ambitious, in retrospect.

And the "loser" in this situation is my photography. Which makes me unhappy, as you may imagine.

I'm sure I'll write more about this in my wrap-up post once the project is complete.

That doesn't mean I have plans to "phone it in" for the rest of the project (though some of you may be wondering!) It just means that sometimes I'm choosing more simplistic subjects to take things back to basics and reduce the time commitment each day. I'm still learning with each sketch.

And I actually have more elaborate ideas for sketches once the project is complete and my sketching becomes less time-bound. Again, I'll save those thoughts for the end of project wrap-up.

I actually have some of my favourite objects in the queue to draw in the next week. So please bear with me.

Meanwhile, I hope you're all doing okay. Sending you love, if you need it. Or even if you think you don't. xx

DeSIRE test flight on 24 April 2013.

The DeSIRE (Demonstration of Satellites enabling the Insertion of RPAS in Europe) demonstration project is a joint ESA-EDA initiative carried out by an international consortium led by Indra. It is aimed at demonstrating the safe insertion of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) in non-segregated airspace using satellites capabilities for RPAS command and control, ATC communications and Mission data transfer to ground, in order to satisfy the needs of potential user communities. The demonstration is carried out in Spain through several flights using a RPAS (Heron 1) providing airborne maritime surveillance services to the Spanish Users involved in the project.

Using Apple's remote app for the iPhone I can now control the audio and video in the home using the phone. In the kitchen but the kids want a new movie upstairs... not an issue. Having a party and want to switch up the music... just do it!

I still have to keep the Harmony around as the remote app doesn't launch Boxee.
