(from the archives of my trip to new york city last november.)

where were you september 11th, 2001? i remember the morning as if it were yesterday. i was getting ready for school, still in college at the time, taking remedial math upgrades. my mom phone while on her way to work to tell me to turn on the TV. i flicked on CNN and didn't move for the next hour. i watched on live TV as both towers fell. i remember saying "oh my god" and "holy shit". i went to school that day feeling so numb but my mind was twisted. my sister was scheduled to fly to new york that thursday. all i kept think was i couldn't wait to call her and tell her that her trip would be cancelled. someone made a passing comment about it in math class but i don't think anyone realized the magnitude and the lasting effect the events of that day would have.

this past november i was able to travel to new york and visit ground zero. i took the PATH train right through the middle of it actually. the visit was a very sobering experience. the gaping hole, the plaques listing thousands of names, the building next door that still shows it's scars... you can't helpo but be in awe of the whole scene. seeing the site and the city first hand brough everything i had seen on CNN to reality, a very unfortunate reality.

if you feel compelled, please take a moment to remember and share your 9/11 stories and photos here.

Wonder if these classic passenger cars remember stopping at this old Milwaukee Road depot? Now they just roll on by at 79MPH like all the other passenger trains do in this age of railroading.

863 is the year when the Saints Cyril and Methodius came to our lands from Greece, and made the first alphabet for the Old Slavonic language. This was needed for the recognition of the language as official for ceremonies of the Christian church. Until then the only official language was Latin, and this simple fact led to tensions and many armed conflicts - western countries of Europe have seen them as supporters of Christianity, and the tendention of eastern countries to use their own language was seen as opposition against the church. The work of Cyril and Methodius in Moravia was base for all later comming Eastern Christian and Orthodox churches.

so, i paid a visit to the remember me set today and it was actually quite worthwhile

i got to watch them filming for about 2 hours... maybe a little more

the crew was actually very nice, let everyone stand across the street, provided the fans moved into washington sq park so as not to be in the shot as the filmed

basically, this morning/afternoon, they filmed a shot where rob and the guy who plays his friend in the movie are saying goodbye and parting ways

of course, they filmed it over and over and over

unfortunately, when they broke for lunch, a bunch of fans went way out of control.

i promise you, i was not one of them. in fact, when they broke loose and took off, chasing rob and his bodyguards out of his trailer and around the block, i turned around and went around the corner in the OTHER direction

but, then, i re-encountered the angry mob when i rounded the corner

obviously, i'm a little nuts... i stood at a movie set all day... and, you know i've done other kooky things.

but, i could never, would never, will never RUN after someone

and, these people took it one step beyond that, they actually grabbed at him while they chased.

and, many of them were NOT kids

i have no idea how anyone thinks that's okay.

anyhow, hope poor rob wasn't too emotionally scarred from the first day on the nyc set

i am busy tomorrow with work... so, i won't get to go back

but, even if i don't catch another glimpse for the rest of the summer, i'm content

i was about 10 ft away for several hours and that's good enough!

I remember once taking a freewheel apart and rebuilding it. Only once I might add! Those pawls, springs and ballbearings were a nightmare.

Due to the increasing Allied threat in 1945, among other things, Kamp Amersfoort was transferred to the Dutch Red Cross. On April 19, 1945, this was officially confirmed by “SS-Brigadeführer und Generalmajor der Polizei ‘Schongarth’.

The existing 475 to 500 prisoners were no longer the responsibility of the German occupying forces. On April 20, the guards left the camp. From that moment on the present former prisoners enjoyed their relative freedom. Kamp Amersfoort was at that time a shaky enclave in occupied territory. On May 8, 1945, when British and Canadian soldiers marched into the camp, the liberation was also to the former prisoners a fact.

April 19, 2013

Every year, the transfer to the Dutch Red Cross is commemorated. The memorial - where former prisoners, relatives and interested parties to be present - will take place on the grounds of the memorial of Kamp Amersfoort.

The journey is in the revealing of what’s already true about us,

in the unveiling of our essence. Our task is to unlayer beliefs of

separation, smallness and unworthiness and come into the full

expression of who the Universe created us to be.

~Mary Manin Morrissey

Last year we were in Canada during the Christmas season. We got this ornament for our tree here in Orlando to remember our time there.

Eixample is the "new city" in Barcelona. Meaning "the expansion," it's the part of Barcelona designed in the late 18th and early 19th century just north of the Old City. Its streets are very orderly -- a square grid -- with a few diagonal avenues running through it.

You'll primarily find 5-6 story buildings where the ground floor is commercial (restaurants, markets, bodegas, etc.) and all the upper floors are residential. At each intersection, all the corners are slightly recessed to form a small circle.

From street level, you'll notice the balconies, mostly wrought-iron or of a uniform color. If you can find a way to see an aerial view of Eixample, you'll definitely see how square and orderly the street layout is.
