Tenryu-ji is a world heritage site for its relationship to Shogun Ashikaga Takauji and former Emperor Go-Daigo. It is also the head temple of the Tenryu sect of Rinzai Buddhism. It also has the oldest garden of its kind due to the fact that it survived the many fires which destroyed the actual temple buildings. Those buildings were established, originally, in 1339 with the current ones dating back to the Meiji era.
