My latest ANIMAL VIDEO (warning, it's a bit shocking): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T2-Xszz7FI

You find a selection of my 80 BEST PHOTOS (mostly not yet on Flickr) here: www.lacerta-bilineata.com/western-green-lizard-lacerta-bi... (the website exists in ESPAÑOL, FRANÇAIS, ITALIANO, ENGLISH, DEUTSCH)

ABOUT THE PHOTO:

So this photo is a bit of a novelty for me - at least here on Flickr, but it's also a journey back in time in a sense. I've always loved b/w and sepia photography; already as a very young teenager I would go out into the woods with an old Pentax Spotmatic (which I had nicked from my father) whenever it was a foggy day to shoot b/w compositions of sunbeams cutting through the ghostlike trees.

I used films with a sensitivity of at least 1600 (for those of you who remember what that means 😉 ), and the resulting photos had an incredibly fine grain which I loved; I blew them up to the size of posters and hung them on the walls of my teenage man-cave next to Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Slash.

But then I abandoned photography altogether for 20 years, and when I finally picked up a camera again, it was one of the digital kind. Now neither film nor grain played any role in my photographic endeavours - let alone b/w compositions: because the reason I fell in love with shooting pictures once more was the rare and incredibly colorful lizard species that had chosen my garden as its habitat.

It's this species - the Lacerta bilineata aka the western green lizard - that my photo website www.lacerta-bilineata.com/ and also my Flickr gallery are dedicated to, but I've since expanded that theme a bit so that it now comprises the whole Lacerta bilineata habitat, which is to say my garden and its immediate surroundings and all the flora and fauna I find in it.

I like that my gallery and the website have this clear theme, because in order to rise to the challenge of portraying all aspects of a very specific little eco system (which also happens to be my home of sorts), it forces me to constantly explore it from fresh angles, and I keep discovering fascinating new motives as my photographic journey continues.

Which brings me to the horse pasture you see in this photo. This playground for happy horsies lies just outside my garden, and it normally only interests me insofar as my green reptile friends claim parts of it as their territory, and I very much prefer it to be horseless (which it thankfully often is).

Not that the horses bother the reptiles - the lizards don't mind them one bit, and I've even seen them jump from the safety of the fly honeysuckle shrub which the pasture borders on right between the deadly looking hooves of the horses to forage for snails, without any sign of fear or even respect.

No, the reason I have a very conflicted relationship with those horses is that they are mighty cute and that there's usually also foals. The sight of those beautiful, happy animals jumping around and frolicking (it's a huge pasture and you can tell the horses really love it) is irresistible: and that inevitably attracts what in the entire universe is known as the most destructive anti-matter and ultimate undoing of any nature photographer: other humans.

Unlike with the horses, the lizards ARE indeed very much bothered by specimens of loud, unpredictable Homo sapiens sapiens - which makes those (and by extension also the horses) the cryptonite of this here reptile photographer. It's not the horses' fault, I know that, but that doesn't change a thing. I'm just telling you how it is (and some of you might have read about the traumatic events I had to endure to get a particular photo - if not, read at your own risk here: www.flickr.com/photos/191055893@N07/51405389883/in/datepo... - which clearly demonstrated that even when it's entirely horseless, that pasture is still a threat for artistic endeavours).

But back to the photo. So one morning during my vacation back in May I got up quite early. It had rained all night, and now the fog was creeping up from the valley below to our village just as the sky cleared up and the morning sun started to shine through the trees.

And just as I did when I was a teenager I grabbed my camera and ran out to photograph this beautiful mood of ghostlike trees and sunbeams cutting through the mist. There had already been such a day a week earlier (which is when I took this photo: www.flickr.com/photos/191055893@N07/51543603732/in/datepo... ), but this time, the horses were also there.

Because of our slightly strained relationship I only took this one photo of them (I now wish I had taken more: talk about missed opportunities), and otherwise concentrated on the landscape. It was only later when I went through all the photos on my computer that I realized that I actually really liked those horses, even despite the whole composition being such a cliché. And I realized another thing: when I drained the photo of all the color, I liked it even better - because there was almost a bit of grain in it, like in the photos from my youth.

Since then I have experimented quite a bit with b/w and sepia compositions (some of which I will upload here eventually I guess), but this photo here is the first one that helped me rediscover my old passion. I hope you like it even though it builds quite a stark contrast with the rest of my tiny - and very colorful - gallery. But in the spirit of showing you the whole Lacerta bilineata habitat (and also in the spirit of expanding my gallery a bit beyond lizards and insects), I think it's not such a bad fit.

As always, many greetings to all of you, have a wonderful day and don't hesitate to let me know what you think 😊

When you meet someone new, it’s like opening up a new door of possibilities into the way your life can be. But, the thing is, people always show you their best selves when they start a relationship and it’s hard to know if those are the long lasting qualities or if it’s just to make a good impression before the bad traits show themselves-the drinking too much, the affairs, the vulgar jokes, the gambling, the passive aggression-all those vices that make us human but also make us toxic to one another. I was lucky enough to meet someone that stayed the same way he was when I met him and we’ve been together for over 20 years but I know this is not often the case...

Oddly enough, I find meeting someone new often similar to traveling to a new place.

A pair of swans on the frozen lode. I hear that swans succumb to the same upsets as with human relationships, but some stay together for life! All the parallels between humans and other animals are endlessly interesting to me

A proximité d'un élevage de puceron j'ai remarqué cette Fourmis et Coccinelle qui semblaient favoriser une relation de bon voisinage. Après quelques accolades, l'une et l'autre sont retournée à leurs occupations.

Near an aphid farm I noticed this Ant and Ladybug which seemed to favor a good neighborly relationship. After a few hugs, one and the other returned to their occupations.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

Wishing all my WTBW friends Congratulations for our Third Anniversary! Thanks to you all for your wonderful artistic contributions for a better world over the past 3 years. Hopefully, in a small way we make a difference.

Let's all reach out beyond the divide and come together in kindness, tolerance, understanding, love, help, respect, positive thinking and actions, compassion and embrace our differences, my friends!

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

I was bewitched by the friendly relationship between these two foals; in the next autumn they will be tamed and started their sporting profession. Only then will it be given a name,

by the Stud or from those who will buy them directly or at auctions.

Thank you very much for your visits, faves, and kind comments - Chandana

Love watching these symbionic relationships, where the ants offer protection in exchange for a sugary poop, called honeydew.

Here they appear to be waiting for breakfast. Thanks for your comments and faves, they are truly appreciated.

As found, after 8 inches of snow melted, in November.

It is a symbiotic relationship. The peony produces nectar from unopened buds that ants love to eat, much like Bamboo says. There are a few species of plants that produce nectar outside of their flowers to tempt ants to live nearby.

The peony or paeony is a flowering plant in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. Peonies are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Scientists differ on the number of species that can be distinguished, ranging from 25 to 40, although the current consensus is 33 known species. The relationships between the species need to be further clarified.

Excerpt from www.butchartgardens.com/stunning-dragon-fountain-gift-peo...:

A striking bronze dragon fountain was unveiled today at The Butchart Gardens by owner Ms. Robin Clarke and Ms. Sheng Lei, Vice Mayor, City of Suzhou.

The magnificent 2 meter high by 3 meter long bronze and granite sculpture weighing in excess of 2700 kg, is a gift from the People’s Republic of China and the City of Suzhou in conjunction with the 35th anniversary of the Sister-City relationship with the City of Victoria. Special guests in attendance at Saturday’s unveiling included Her Honour, Judith Guichon Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Her Excellency Liu Fei, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps, the Mayor of Central Saanich Ryan Windsor, and a large delegation of government officials from the City of Suzhou.

“Consul General Madam Liu Fei and Officials from Beijing recognized the long-standing history The Butchart Gardens enjoys with Chinese people locally and within China” said Dave Cowen, General Manager. “The dragon is a universally recognized symbol of China. We are very honoured to accept this magnificent gift and to welcome the Chinese delegation, local dignitaries and special guests on this happy occasion.”

According to wikipedia:

The European robin (Erithacus rubecula), most commonly known in Anglophone Europe simply as the robin, is a small insectivorous passerine bird, specifically a chat, that was formerly classed as a member of the thrush family (Turdidae), but is now considered to be an Old World flycatcher. Around 12.5–14.0 cm (5.0–5.5 in) in length, the male and female are similar in colouration, with an orange breast and face lined with grey, brown upperparts and a whitish belly. It is found across Europe, east to Western Siberia and south to North Africa; it is sedentary in most of its range except the far north.

The term robin is also applied to some birds in other families with red or orange breasts. These include the American robin (Turdus migratorius), which is a thrush, and the Australian red robins of the genus Petroica, members of a family whose relationships are unclear.

'I've come to believe that it’s worth getting to know your fearful mind... it’s never going to leave you. You can’t evict it. It’s more or less hardwired into your psyche and will accompany you onto every stage you set foot on, into every job interview you go to, and every new relationship you enter into. It’s there, and it’s not going to shut up.'

Edzná is a Maya archaeological site in the north of the Mexican state of Campeche.

The most remarkable building at the site is the main temple located at the plaza. Built on a platform 40 m high, it provides a wide overview of the surroundings. Another significant building located in the plaza is a ball court. Two parallel structures make up the ball court. The top rooms of the ball court were possibly used to store images of the gods associated with the events, along with items needed for the games.

Edzná was already inhabited in 400 BC, and it was abandoned c. 1500 AD. During the time of occupation, a government was set up whose power was legitimized by the relationship between governors and the deities. In the Late Classic period Edzná was part of the Calakmul polity. Edzná may have been inhabited as early as 600 BC but it took until 200 AD before it developed into a major city. The word Edzná comes from "House of the Itzaes". The architectural style of this site shows signs of the Puuc style, even though it is far from the Puuc Hills sites. The decline and eventual abandonment of Edzná remains a mystery today.

Edzná was discovered in 1907. The first organised excavations started in 1958. In 1986, coordinating agencies began to employ Guatemalan refugees in the excavation, restoration and maintenance at Edzná.

Thank you everyone.

My friend Rachel has such a wonderful relationship with Bolingo. She has spent years developing this connection. The handstand happened while they were doing their normal training exercises. This regular training allows the keepers to elicit certain behaviors in order to provide routine medical checkups and other examinations without the need to sedate them. In a perfect world none of these animals would need to be in captivity, but unfortunately the way we are destroying the natural world it may be the only way to prevent these amazing animals from going extinct. Bolingo has already fathered two children, Oliver and Enzi. This sort of world wide breeding program helps to ensure the long term survival of these animals.

....something about relationships........
