shot with a single portaflash head (336VM), set directly in front of subject. Used a snoot to direct light and a black backdrop at least 2 stops below subject with most ambient light negated. Linked via direct cable from hot shoe and fired via infra red remote.
Another feature of the new blue decor package are these large colorful square panels that run along the tops of the department walls. They are themed in-tune with the department. Here you can see that they are shoe-themed. Here is how this section of the store looked with the previous decor.
The Des Plaines, IL, Kmart made much greater use of them, and they covered much of the perimeter of the box of the store. Here in Manhattan, there are department-store windows around the perimeter, which don't allow for them to be used as heavily on the interior, so they are used only on the internal walls where there is room.

The massive 143,000 sq. ft. Penn Plaza Kmart is a top-performing Kmart store due to its location one block from Macy's flagship in the heart of the Herald Square shopping district. The area is a shopping and tourist destination in Manhattan, and Kmart recently received a version of the new blue decor which we have seen only in the Des Plaines, Il and Elmhurst, Il stores. The update was most likely in response to Target's announcement that it was opening a 43,000 sq. ft. flex store one block over in former Foot Locker/Woolworth space.
This unique Kmart opened in 1996 on the ground level and 3 sub-levels of a skyscraper at a time when Kmart was building stores all over New York City and Long Island (and expanding greatly nationwide).
The Des Plaines store, in addition to receiving the new blue decor and circular department signage, was also re-merchandised in many areas and received new departments like fresh foods (K-Fresh) and a full-service paint department. By contrast, the changes here in Manhattan seem to be mostly cosmetic, with only the jewelry and accessories counter moving.
