Compositionally Challenged

Week 29 Reflections

Shot with an Enna "Correlar 80 mm F 2.9" lens on a Canon EOS R5.

With green airglow in the sky, we arrived back at the parking lot with a couple of minutes to spare, so we went to a nearby puddle that I had scouted earlier for a quick reflection shot before departing.

After hiking at the Land of Medicine Buddha in the Santa Cruz mountains I went for sunset at the Twin Lakes State Beach in Santa Cruz, California. The sun was peaking through the clouds at times, and the sea was quite rough. Later at the blue hour I noticed a bird walking on a log. I hunkered down to get a reflection shot of the bird and the Walton Lighthouse in the back.

I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

"Mountain Mornings" - Reading & Northern #425 backs slowly away from the coal dock in the former CNJ yards of Jim Thorpe, PA on the morning of July 4, 2021. Rain the previous few days left a nice puddle for a reflection shot of this former Gulf Mobile & Ohio pacific.

This photo isn't exactly what I had planned. I was walking through the Melbourne CBD taking photos when it started to rain. I've been waiting for an opportunity to take some rainy photos at Centre Place, so I passed through on my return to the station. I'd hoped to get some good puddle reflection shots, but I found that it's really difficult with dirty brown water! Either way, I still really like this low-level perspective of my favourite photography spot.

This was one of my last efforts to get a reflection off of Lake Manly during the morning. This area was protected a little from the wind and gave me a start of a nice reflection. The clouds from the morning had left and I decided to go up to Dante's view to see what the view looked like from there.

The wind is always a concern when trying to get reflections shots and it is compounded when you bring up Death Valley. It is almost always blowing wind here. When I went to the visitor center, the weather for the next day was supposed to have 20 to 40 mph winds. I was hoping and praying that the wind would die down today. Tomorrow wasn't going to work.

Probably I´m one of the most camera-shy persons here at flickr. Though I really love the camera..... but only if it is not pointing at me. From time to time I find myself in some reflection shots like this one. And I think how odd this shyness is...

for a nice long hike in 85 degree weather :D Plus stopping along the way for some beautiful reflection shots!

Reflection shot along the Icefields Parkway in Jasper National Park.

We went to visit friends in nearby Saratoga, a town in the Silicon Valley, California. They have a kitchen with a shiny marble kitchen top, which invited me to take a reflection shot.

I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

When you are a travel photographer, you discover some locations quite by accident that turns out to be exceptional. Sparks Lake in central Oregon is one such location for me. I only heard about this spot on my second trip to Oregon, even though we passed through the nearby town on both trips. It was a billboard that informed me about the location. I knew immediately the kind of shot I wanted, and a perfectly calm lake was essential for the photo. This being a mountain pass, my past experiences have taught me that the best chance for a reflection shot is at sunrise.

So we woke up at five and drove up the mountain pass to Sparks Lake to be on time for the sunrise. Unfortunately, the day we picked turned out to be cloudless, and it being summer, the light was coming in from behind the mountain. As a landscape photographer, I have been adept at working with less than optimal situations by then. Since the sky was rather bland, I decided to include very little of it in my composition, instead focusing on the rock formation that I was standing on. I wish I had paid more attention to the polarization effect on the sky, though. But I am still happy with the image.

Last December I headed to Chur, a regional capital in the Swiss Alps. I went to high school there at the Kantonsschule. There was a Christmas market in the old part of the town. At times it was raining heavily. I ended up at the Arcas square for this reflection shot. There are concerts and other activities at this square in the summer.

This is the San Joaquin River near Jackass Meadow. We missed the aspens changing color by a couple of days and I didn't bring my fishing pole. So I set up the tripod and tried to get some nice reflection shots. It was a difficult task because the wind had started to pick up. I had to patiently wait for the wind to calm down enough to get shots like this one. It is such a beautiful location that I didn't mind waiting.

Some years ago, we did a road trip through some of the American southwest's iconic locations, including stops at Sedona, Monument Valley, Lower Antelope Canyon, and the Grand Canyon National Park. One of the most surprising places during the visit was Sedona, as I had not heard about it much before. The only spot I had in mind was the Crescent Moon Picnic Area which had a great view of the famous Cathedral Rocks.

If I remember this correctly, our timing was a bit off, and we missed peak fall colors by a week, but there was still a bit of color left over on the cottonwood trees that adorned the park, and views here turned out to be some of the most stunning that I have seen. A slick rock area in the park has these massive scars leading up to the rock formations in the background. Sometimes this area has puddles in these holes that make it possible to take a nice reflection shot but even without the water, they worked well for this image. I am glad I found this image while reviewing my old files.

I like to visit nearby Hakone Estate and Gardens, a Japanese garden in Saratoga, California. Three Vietnamese women did a photo shoot at the wooden arch bridge at the end of January, in preparation of the Chinese New Year. I used this occasion to take a reflection shot of two women in beautiful dresses posing for their photographer standing on the bridge.

After a great afternoon of photography, the clouds lined up nicely for a few brief moments as the sun set so that I could get this reflection shot.

Every time I visit the Abbey I have a go at the 'classic' reflection shot - not managed it yet, but I'll keep trying!

The fourth of five reflection shots, all sufficiently different to merit posting.

Shot on iPhone 13 Pro.

Went for a ride with mates around the river - and stopped at the man-made beach at South Bank to get a reflection shot. Had a couple of different frames but went with this one, with the palm trees offering a balance/contrast to the CBD on the other side of the river. Not bad weather today.

hello Flickr friends....i just got back from our trip in Sedona and the Grand Canyon...we're still in San Diego though for another 3 days and then we head to Toronto for the last part of our trip.....this was one of my first shots of the Red Rocks in Sedona...this one is called Cathedral Rock and i took this shot from a dammed section of Oak Creek which allowed the water to be still enough to get some decent reflection shots.....took a bit of a hike to to get to this place and when you've just driven 7 hours, it gets to be a bit of a challenge too to push yourself to go out and explore right away....with views like this one, i totally forgot right away that i was dead tired....

shot this using a circular polarizer with a tripod, using my kit lens for my D90 an 18-105mm.....pls.View On Black

sorry if i've been slow in visiting your streams lately but i will try my best to catch up with your streams as soon as my vacay is done......have a good one friends!!!!

After Vik we drove east and for destination Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, located in the south-eastern region of Iceland. On the way we found a still pond next to the road, perfect for a reflection shot. In the back in the center you can see the Fjallsárlón Glacier, to the right is a bit of the big Jökulsárlón Glacier. Both glaciers are fed by Vatnajökull, the largest and most voluminous ice cap in Iceland.

reflection shot, using Nikkor 10.0-24.0 mm f/3.5-4.5

I've only ever seen a couple of these birds and both were in The Okavango, in Botswana. This one was much more intent on the water than on our quiet presence and the surface was still enough for a nice reflection shot. Taken on our recent holiday to Slovakia.

The previous reflection shot was the spot where this was taken. I had a few perches etc placed about the place. It's not one I have the opportunity to photo often around here. So to be able to get any sort of shot is a bonus for me.

Thanks to all who view and comment on my images, much appreciated :)

A sudden, heavy, rainstorm helped me catch this nice reflection shot of one of the more interesting and beautiful 21st Century churches I've seen, the Church of the Holy Archangels in Etchmiadzin.

The Church of the Holy Archangels (Armenian: Սրբոց Հրեշտակապետաց եկեղեցի), is a church located in the precincts of Etchmiadzin Cathedral, the mother church of Armenia.

It was designed by Jim Torosyan and built from 2007-11.

It is a circular-cylindrical church with an intentionally minimalist design. It has a diameter of 15 meters. The small, high, windows give an intentionally soft and filtered quality to the interior light.

It occupies the northeastern corner of the Mother See complex, the area between the Gevorkian Seminary and the Gate of Vazgen I.

The consecration of the church took place on 5 November 2011 by Catholicos Karekin II. The church is mainly used by the deacons and students of the seminary to hold their daily liturgical services and divine worship, although it is also open for secular worshippers. It is currently (summer 2022) very busy as Etchmiadzin Cathedral is closed for renovation.

This was the first shot I took of this bridge east of Paynesville, MN as a westbound behind a single GEVO crossed it on a calm evening in November 2008. It turned out pretty well, but I regretfully cut off the reflection at the bottom of the frame. I would return to this location a bunch of times over the years before I finally got an equally clear reflection shot that included the entire thing.

Getting a good reflection shot is not an easy task. Alpine Lakes in the mornings are the traditional source of a reflection shot, but while the valley is home to Merced River, there are no significant lakes in the area. Now the Merced river snakes its way into many of the classic views of the Yosemite Valley, being a quite fast-moving river, the chances of a good reflection shot is scarce.

So, imagine my surprise when we were at Valley view spot for a sunrise shot during the winter of 2014 and saw perfectly still water with reflections everywhere. After the customary sunrise shot at valley view, we did a quick check of all our favorite spots. This spot at the hanging bridge is my preferred composition of the Yosemite Falls. Now during 2014, the drought in California was at its peak, and the majestic Yosemite falls was a shell of its usual self. Now, this is not a unique composition by any means, but the luck of the traveling photog was with me that day.

Another reflection shot taken on another run. Bridge nerds might be interested to know our Story Bridge was designed by the same bloke who did the Sydney Harbour Bridge. He was into metal.

Wet shoes are well worth it sometimes. Do you agree?

I went to the park to get some reflection shots and as I was standing on the edge of the lake looking at the reflections in the water this mute swan decided to have a flap for me, giving me some added interest.

I was glad I just got it in frame.

I am a big fan of reflection shots.

Explore #428 Goooooooooooooooooodddddddddddddddddd Morning all...I have just got home from taking shots this morning. I went to do some sunrise shots, but it was a little cloudy, then by the time I got myself organsied I had missed it.

I decided to try and get this water reflection shot that I have been looking at everyday on the way to work and when I got there a man was mowing the area lol

So I then took myself instead to the city to get another shot for my photo group for the looking up challenge. I have all three now. (so if you are in the group - don't look ) lol

I also got some reflection shots of the city and the river which I will work on later....I just wanted to get this too you hot off the Nikon lol

I have taken shots of this building before a lonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg time ago it seems now.

Hi... It's been a while i didn't post a sunset shot...

and its all chairs........!

After substantial rains in May and early June, I had the luxury of some reflection shots.....albeit with a bland sky. This is an image taken late in the day. The next morning is also featured in my photostream.

I've unfortunately been drawn to read some of the recent nauseating articles about the metaverse hype. Discussions of how "luxury brands" can expect to profit handsomely since... obviously... people will just NEED to buy Gucci shoes and the like for their avatars and other metaverse "possessions." Ridiculously enough, plots of real estate are already selling for multi-millions. (Yes, let's pause to reflect on the irony of the term REAL estate, as it is used so seriously in these metaverse descriptions)

Ugh. I'm not exactly a Neanderthal and am sure there will be legitimate and worthy uses of this platform, but leave it to humanity to immediately dive in and rush to make it an inconsequential space for meaningless preening. Another world for profiteering is what's on the mind for the creators, I assure you... not the empty platitudes about connecting people. The "connections" will largely be ranting, bullying, polarized factions. Good luck controlling that.
