The reflecting pools at the Royal Botanical Gardens were doing their job well on my last visit.

A beautiful day at Harrison Lake, in Harrison Hot Springs.

awesome sunset at Devils Lake, MN

I know this doesn't look real, but it is. This was taken in morning light and the water was as still as I have ever seen. The only processing (in LR3) is a slight crop and minimal tweaking. Taken at Huntington Beach State Park, SC on one of the most enjoyable weeks I've had with my camera.

I couldn't resist the addition of Reflection Perfection and it's against Charlotte's (my wife for 45 years) better judgment. You would think by now I would learn to listen to her.

One of my favourite images I have taken, beautiful reflection and autumn colours. 6 shot panorama captured at emmarentia dam in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Ever since I saw Richard Heeks Bubble Pop: Reflection Perfection I wanted to capture images of a bursting bubble. It turned out that it is really difficult to capture a bubble in mid burst. It takes about 10ms for a bubble to burst. So you can imagine that it took me some attempts until I got the images I wanted.

First I tried to use little metal balls to burst the bubble but it turned out that those balls were to little and they just went through the bubble without damaging it. Therefore I decided to use different objects to burst the bubble. I did some research in the internet and it appears that the thickness of a bubble is around 140 nanometer. This is about 10x smaller than the diameter of a red blood cell or about 1000x smaller than the width of a strand of human hair. Even if they seems very fragile I captured some images where a straw and a needle are going through the bubble without doing enough damage to get the bubble to burst.

As I mentioned I wanted to use little metal balls and a photo gate to have more reproducible method but as this didn't seem to work I decided to use other objects and trigger the flash by hand. It was very exhausting (even if no cleanup work is required here) as my success rate was about 5%.. But finally I'm very happy with the outcome. I was able to capture the bubble at very different stages of the burst.

This one is the first of the series showing the very beginning of the burst.

Some words to the camera settings. It turned out that 1/16th power is to slow to freeze the action, so I had to go with 1/32th power. To increase the DOF I was using a very small aperture. All those factors resulted in a very dark image so that I had to set the ISO to 800, even if I don't like to increase the ISO. Due to the "high" ISO you can see that the picture is noisy in the upper left corner.

Between Crinan and Tayvallich in the Knapdale Forest lies Loch Sween and Caol Scotlish sea-lochs, home to vast coniferous plantations and Atlantic Oak woodland.

The flora and fauna are abundant on these steep, rocky

linear hills or “knaps” with sea-submerged “dales,” between.

From a vast array of bryophytes, liverworts, mosses and fungi

to Red and Roe deer, Wildcats, Golden Eagle, Osprey,

Red Squirrel, Pine Marten and the recently re-introduced European Beaver.

Maerl beds, anenomes, oysters and Volcano Worms inhabit the many inland miles of water-channel or “dales.”

Offshore, near islands like Scarba, Jura and Islay live a wide variety of Cetacea from Dolphin and Porpoise to Minke Whales and Basking Sharks.

It is truly a nature-lovers Garden of Eden.

Here, the north-east to south-west tree-covered “Knaps” are reflected in the glassy, still waters of Loch Sween.

Lush, verdant, green tones contrast brilliantly with the golden shoreline seaweed, and the peace and tranquillity is overwhelming!

Despite shooting quite a few springtime images today, I had to return to my water drop rig to shoot my shot of the day!

It doesn't seem to matter how many times I press the shutter, I'm always fascinated by what I'm going to see next!

It never gets old! It's never boring! It's totally absorbing and completely fascinating! You can't help but become addicted once you've started! Even when you've got a keeper, there's an urge to try just one more time, just in case you get something better!

Even after getting this collision, with its fantastic reflection, I still managed to shoot another twenty or so images - just in case there was a better collision hiding somewhere in the drip tray! :)

This is the first photo of this semester's concentration on orbs in all types of places at night. Last night, Johnny, Matt and I went out to a location that I HAD been dying to go to but will no longer be going there because of the annoying lights that lit up the bridge.

Anyways, the setting is pretty sweet. This little "river" was part of a water feature built a while ago that doesn't get water run through it anymore and this is just leftover rain water I believe. With the dirt however, there was now a tiny layer of mud with water which is why there is still a great reflection. Thankfully there was a large enough dry spot for me to run from the camera to the spot to spin the orb (yay for self-timers!) I had Matt first stand there so that I could auto focus and turn it back to manual.

Because for my first week I wanted to focus on "completing" the orb and portraying a sense of depth, this is a great photo for this week. I way I was able to get such a blown-out blue color was having to spin slowly for two rotations. I also changed out the lights and used three of the tiny LED bulbs and three of the cone LED bulbs that gave more of a glow to fill the gaps. I never realized how much my forearm began to hurt after spinning the orb tool for a minute...not fun since I had spun it for about three of these photos. I wasn't sure at first however, if the mud would produce enough of a reflection to see the actual orb but after a test shot, all three of us were impressed at how well it worked!

For post-processing, I now shoot in RAW and I have never looked back thanks to Lightroom. I open it there and used some basic editing to enhance the blues and reduce the reds/oranges/yellows in the background because they were quite distracting. After that, I focused on trying to emphasize the reflection in the water using the clarity slider. Next, I used the brush tool and moved down the sharpness slider so that it would give the appearance of a high aperture though this was shot at f/18. I brushed all the way around the orb (and its reflection) and left the far side wall of the "river" un-brushed as well.

This photo fits well with my concentration because I have the focus of orbs in all places. I have been trying to broaden my locations for night photos and I think this spot under the road and the background setting puts this idea into perspective: I am trying to spin an orb in every situation, even surrounded by water with some of the worst lighting yet.

I really think this turned out great for my first shots for this concentration and I am really looking forward to the rest of the upcoming semester!
