There's no blue at all in these skies, turned so white with fog and haze and smoke from out west that I feel like a bird lost in the clouds. Sunlight really takes it out of me, the blinding haze of peak summer bringing on a steady exhaustion. I barely want to move, let alone hike, and each step feels like a monumental effort to make. But by the same token, I've learned to embrace the heartwaking experience of extremes. There are so many ways to crowd your senses out here. The endlessness in the view from a high vantage, the incredible stillness of a powerful ocean reduced to tiny ripples, and the sour scent of salt water lapping on warm beach rocks. I've had no trouble believing I belong wherever I am, however long I stay there. It's perhaps the greatest beauty in being a solitary soul. Your sense of fitting in doesn't have much to do with country, boundary, or culture. Instead, it's found in what happens when you're left alone in your surroundings. I insist on remembering, that when it comes to humans, the world is mostly an empty place.

At the beginning of the 1930s, the City of Montréal decided to replace the Maxwell pavilions with a spacious heated building. Like the work site at lac aux Castors, the construction of the Chalet, in 1931-1932, was one of the large make-work projects undertaken to reduce the unemployment caused by the Great Depression.

The architect, Aristide Beaugrand-Champagne wanted the Chalet to be well back from the lookout, unlike the Maxwell pavilions. The rhythm of the openings and arrangement of the windows mark the 49.5-metre façade. We find these characteristics of rhythm and symmetry on each side of the Chalet. The gabled tile roof has a large cornice that overhangs the front of the chalet.

The building is a study in contrasts with its imposing size, its luxurious materials (marble, granite), and its elegant doors and paintings by great artists, that combined make it a beautiful, opulent building. But it remains humbly known as the Chalet for its exposed beams, the simplicity of its interior layout and its vocation as a shelter for hikers and skiers. It was renovated in 2001-2002.

They took down the forms and packaged-up everything — even the 2x4s — for reuse elsewhere.

Very cool.

Recent find. Almost dumpster diving. Someone put this out on their curb for the scrap metal recyclers -- looks like it was only used once - almost brand new. So I replaced my existing smoker (similar model, but about 16 years old and used so much it was rusting out), and left my own -- bought for $5 from a neighbor at a garage sale long ago -- out on the curb for the next guy.

"Coming Home 1942"

This mural depicts Broadway between Grove City Rd and Park Street in 1942. The block, then occupied by a private residence, a drug store, a barber shop / real estate office and a restaurant, became the site of City Hall in 1990.

The mural is based on three photographs believed taken on a single day in 1942.

Last October 6, 2010, members of the Lasallian community at De La Salle

University- Dasmarinas in Cavite, Philippines joined the world in an

advance celebration of the 10/10/10 Global Work Party initiatives in support

for the international call to action for the reduction of CO2 emissions to

350parts per million.

Students from the volunteer organization Students' Extension of Resources

Through Voluntary Efforts(SERVE) rode their bikes within the 27 hectare campus

and distributed leaflets to spread the campaign to the general studentry. To add

up to this, they also managed to set up a freedom board wherein students

are encouraged to post different ways and ideas to help reduce one's carbon

emission. A handprint board was also prepared so that students and employees

alike can stamp their paint -soaked hands as support for the 350 campaign.

A mass sponsorship was also carried out in the University Chapel in coherence

with the global campaign which was supported by various offices within the

campus including the Lasallian Community Development Center(LCDC), Environmental

Resource Management Center(ERMAC), Campus Ministry Office, and Chaplain's

Office. After the Holy Communion, a slideshow presentation with regards to the

350 campaign as well as the university's efforts to mitigate climate change

impacts was shown to the hundreds of students present that day within the

chapel. The students also signed up their names and contact details to hundreds

of miniature paper pinwheels as support for the Greenpeace South East Asia's

local campaign for an Energy [R]evolution target of 50% Renewable Energy

Pilipinas by 2020.

Students can also calculate their individual carbon footprints through the ERMAC

office which is in line with the University's Project Carbon Neutral. The ERMAC

also handles the One Million Trees Project and Beyond wherein the different La

Salle Schools in the Philippines aims to plant 1million trees by 2011 in line

with La Salle's Centennial Celebration.

Most of the old railroad track over on the other side of the road is still in place, it is just way too overgrown to be able to see it.
