White Heath Aster - Aster pilosus (or Symphyotrichum pilosum depending upon what source you use) - is a very common native wildflower, often seen in bloom in September and October in old fields, vacant lots, waste areas, roadsides, along railroads, and in pastures throughout the eastern U.S. It is a perennial herb, 2-5 feet tall, with extensively branched upper stems, leaves that are either slightly toothed or with no teeth at all, and open, diffuse inflorescences of 100 or more flower heads, each flower head with white ray petals, usually 15-30 in number, 0.2-0.4 inch long, with yellow to reddish disks 0.2-0.3 inch wide. This species is sometimes also called Awl Aster (because of its narrow, pointed involucral bracts; reduced leaves at the base of a flower or inflorescence) and Hairy Aster (the species name pilosus means covered with long, soft hairs). Another name is Frost Aster. There are three similar species found locally in late summer and early to mid fall in north Alabama. Panicled Aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum, also known as Aster lanceolatus, Aster paniculatus and Aster simplex) has somewhat more hairy foliage overall and it prefers drier habitats, with about 20 ray florets, its leaves with wedged-shaped bases, rather than rounded or cordate (heart-shaped), its stems with lines of fine white hairs, and its mature leaves that are hairless on both their upper and lower sides. Another similar species, the Calico Aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum), has smaller flower heads with fewer petaloid rays (9-14), coarsely toothed leaves, and disks that are usually purple. The Calico Aster also prefers shadier habitats, such as woodland borders and woodland openings and can bloom a bit earlier (in August). Yet another species, the Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides), also has smaller flowerheads with fewer petaloid rays (usually around 12), and its leaves are smaller in size (3 inches long maximum, while White Heath Aster has leaves up to 4 inches long). Horn, Cathcart, Wildflowers of Tennessee, the Ohio Valley, and the Southern Appalachians. www.illinoiswildflowers.info/weeds/plants/fr_aster.htm www.illinoiswildflowers.info/prairie/plantx/hth_asterx.htm www.illinoiswildflowers.info/prairie/plantx/pan_asterx.htm 2. Yesterday was the most beautiful day here in Ohio. It was sunny and warm (well 40 degrees which is warm this time of year). The morning was frosty, with temps down in the teens. All the sap that was flowing the day before had stopped and was frozen in the spiles. It didn’t take long for them to thaw out with the sun and warmth and start flowing again. These are prime sugaring temps; you want it to be above freezing during the day and below freezing at night. The rest of this week and next week look like it’s going to be beautiful, especially for sugaring.

Proposed improvement: Paving the shoulders during the next road resurfacing and reducing the speed limit.
Why did I buy a pink toothbrush? At the time, it didn't occur to me that we wouldn't still be a couple. At least when you're living alone there's no one to make fun of you.
Harsh, yet glossy, reality
These two pepers were on the reduced produce rack. The package of two cost 50 cents. Not bad considering one usually goes for a buck.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District project manager Dave Cook (left) and ProVen Management Inc. superintendant Patrick Feeney outline April 8, 2011 where double-barrel box culverts will soon pass beneath Main Steet in Napa, Calif. The Corps will install the culverts during the next construction phase of a project to reduce the risk of flooding from nearby Napa Creek. ProVen Management is the contractor building the culverts.
“These box culverts will give the creek a straight shot out towards the river,” Cook said. In high water, Napa Creek often overtops and spills into adjacent neighborhoods, causing persistent flooding. The culverts will direct flood waters more quickly to the river and away from homes and businesses. The $14.8 million project, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, is a joint effort of the Corps, the city of Napa, and the Napa Flood Control and Water Conservation District, to reduce flood risk for the city. Sukadelappen, schorseneren, aardappelen en jus.
Braised beef, salsifies, potatoes and gravy.
Not bad at all. :-)
I just need to buy this beef at a butcher next time, because these ones from the supermarket are ridiculously thin!
I cooked the salsifies with some cream, chickenstock and thym for about 15 minutes. Reduced the sauce and finished with some verjus, as I had run out of lemons.
The beef I forgot how I did it. Only that I quickly panfried them, added red wine, old gravy from the freezer and some spices and then braised them in the crockpot for about 11 hours.
And of course I forgot to add the staranise again. (Blumenthal's tip for intensifying the beef-flavour) So now I'm writing it down, hopefully next time....
African countries have made considerable progress in increasing agricultural productivity and reducing hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. But continued population growth, urbanization, changing diets, and climate change are putting pressure on food systems not only to provide more food but also to make more diverse and nutritious foods available and accessible. New digital technologies and services are already making an impact on how food is being produced, processed, marketed, traded, and consumed across the continent. How African countries position themselves to harness and deploy digital technologies will determine the future competitiveness of African agriculture and its contribution to African economies.
This seminar will explore how African countries can develop a “digitalization ecosystem” to help foster growth and competitiveness in the continent’s value chains. Participants will also discuss the institutional and policy innovations that have already been implemented by African governments as well as efforts by the private sector and ag-tech startups to increase the development and use of digital tools and services in agriculture.

A Sister or Houseparent in a Children's Home could easily reduce a child to a quivering wreck.
There are eight children at the Christmas Party, Sister now mentions that you are the one who is not going to get the slice of the chocolate cake as there are only seven pieces, have a biscuit instead.

He is less aggressive and cries less due to frustration.
He has settled very well. "

Since Earth Day I've decided to be a little "greener." I always take my plastic bags back to Walmart to recycle, but today I bought 4 reusuable bags and will buy more the next time. I really hate the plastic bags.... especially when they just put a few things in each and you come home with tons of bags. My 4 new bags were stuffed full today and it felt so good!

New York 28 Nov. 2017 - The Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today formally endorsed a new and ambitious strategic plan for the Organization for the next four years. Under the leadership of its new Administrator, Achim Steiner, the plan sets out a new direction for UNDP as it supports countries to end extreme poverty, reduce inequality and achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
UNDP’s Executive Board is made up of representatives from 36 countries. The Board provides inter-governmental support to and supervision of UNDP activities, ensuring that the Organization remains responsive to the evolving needs of programme countries. The Board carries out this mandate by, among other things, monitoring the performance of UNDP, approving programmes and deciding on administrative and financial plans and budgets.
