Here’s a redrawing of an old illustration I made 7 years ago, in response to how early stores push out Halloween, and rush in Christmas. A problem which has only gotten worse in the years since I drew this. I will never understand the logic behind it. I know some people don’t start doing Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I on the other hand am SUPER into Christmas, and have been known to decorate the day after Halloween (depending on temperatures…I’m very moody if it isn’t cold enough for the holidays, and often will cancel Christmas if it’s freakishly warm out)….but you just can’t put out Christmas as early as these stores are doing. Anything before November should be off limits. Christmas time and Christmas decor is supposed to be full of cheer and good feelings. But seeing it out this early, feels nothing but depressing and wrong. Some of the places I’ve seen Christmas up as early as September. It DOESN’T make sense! Pushing everything up 1-2 months doesn’t produce more purchases. They’d have a point if they put out Christmas early, and kept it full though December. But half the time they just start putting up Valentine’s or Easter shit. So I ask you, what is the point??

Leave Halloween alone.

Sincerely,

The Great Pumpkin

Big thanks to jackie0870yang for redrawing this for me!!

This is a screen print I made for my final outcome. I used different artists work as inspiration from a visit to the National Gallery, redrawing each piece to create a composition which worked as a repeat pattern. I used a various religious imagery and thought this could work well as a backdrop for a theatrical piece or as bed sheets, curtains or blankets. If I were to develop this piece further I would Spend more time on making it more detailed and making the pattern flow better so there is no obvious stops to where the pattern has finished and started again.
