I grew up in Rapid City, and was in high school at Central in the late '70s when the mall opened and downtown emptied out. Every time I've visited in the past 10 years or so downtown has been cooler; more fun. But this: I never imagined something this awesome would ever happen.

Castledown House is a listed building, but no one seems to have told the English Heritage people that it's already been demolished. It was once the vicarage for St Mary in the Castle church and is said to have some connection with Alister Crowley, although I have no idea why. Legend has it that there was once a tunnel to the church from here, but the builders have found nothing to substantiate that.
I don't know much about Castledown House, but remember it as an abandoned, derelict eyesore. The London Gazette records it as a guest house and its owner going bankrupt in 1967, but I'm sure it was already abandoned by then. The family that lived here in WW2 lost their son, who was in the RAF, in action over Italy.

Once due for demolition, now a city icon.
After standing empty for years the old Las Palmas was due for demolition. A pity, especially considering the history of the edifice. The building had been erected as workshop building for the Holland America Line by the architects Van den Broek & Bakema in 1953 and could certainly be considered part of the Dutch architectural heritage. After years of many different functions it finally fell into disrepair. Many plans were devised to save it, but none were feasible financially and it seemed to mean the end for the building…
OVG developed a business model that enabled the old warehouse not only to be saved, but also to make it something more than it had ever been. A unique mix of cultural and commercial organizations jointly provided a financially sound foundation on which this creative redevelopment project could be realized.
Most extraordinary, however, was not what happened inside the old Las Palmas, but what happened on top. A unique design by Benthem Crouwel Architecten enabled OVG to almost double the effective space of the property and furthermore create the most sought-after workplace in Rotterdam. In our view this project exactly encapsulates all that OVG stands for so it should come as no surprise that we decided to occupy this revolutionary property ourselves.
The huge Luggate steading is getting some repair work done to the chimney as part of the redevelopment of the farm. The view from the top of the scaffolding - of Traprain and Whittingehame and all the way out to Pressmennan and Spott - would probably take in at least another five farms with their extraordinary chimneys rising out of the rolling East Lothian fieldscape.
Update: the scaffolding is down, the chimney looks great and work on the rest of the steading has restarted.
