Some derelict buildings in the Gloucester Quays area in Gloucester. I'll head back and take a few more shots when it isn't pouring with rain and the light is a little more flattering.

30 minutes in the Botanic Gardens..

I've worked next to the Wollongong Botanic Gardens for 38 years, and I've never actually gone there for a walk around. Dropped in on Friday afternoon for 30 minutes after work before the rains set in for the weekend.

Must get back for a decent walk soon ;-)

(RDM - Grofsmederij / Ketelmakerij (Urban Frontiers 131))

Europe, Netherlands, Rotterdam, RDM, Grofsmederij/Ketelmakerij, demolition/renovation of the quays, Caterpillar excavator (six word story) (uncut)

The RDM wharf on Heijplaat…... After the bankruptcy of the wharf and many years of dereliction and mixed use, it's been redeveloped.

For in-depth critical information about the history and redevelopment of the RDM, check out RDM, architectuurhistorische verkenningen (2005) by Crimson architectural historians, to me one of the most authoritative sources in the field of Dutch urban development.

One the first parts to be redeveloped was the Machine hall. It became the RDM-campus. The Port of Rotterdam (Havenbedrijf), Hogeschool Rotterdam and ROC Albedacollege were the instigators. The latter two became the prime users. The giant hall is split in two halves. Check out this post, it was shot in the one for educational purposes - in the ROC Albeda college sub-part. This organization provides low and mid level professional education

After that, the Onderzeebootloods was renovated. Until 1994, submarines were built there, and it is now a facility for large-scale exhibitions. Check out this post..

For an overview of the other buildings that are redeveloped , check out this.

The most recent part that´s being redeveloped is the ´Grofsmederij´ (Foundry) /´Ketelmakerij´ (Boiler production facility). It will be made available as modular production facilities. Dimensions: 15.000 sq m, height under the overhead cranes 16 m, length of the quay : 150 m. What´s shown here is the stripped outer shell of the giant building and the renovation works of the quays, which involve the demolition and renewal of the top layer and partly also that of the foundation. More Information about this project is here.

A block in The Town of Schwedt/Uckermark/Bramdenburg/Germany being 'redeveloved' in the 1990s. Schwedt, a town of currently 50.000 inhabitants, was one of the 'show off'- towns of the GDR. Stamping out a petrolium indusrtry out of the nothing, drawing workforce from all over the GDR., privileged in Schwedt. Today, they are desperate..

My husband and I were fortunate to tour Whitehall Mill (early 18th century), an historic mill currently in redevelopment to become a mixed-use retail, office, and housing complex. I'm obsessed with historic preservation and real estate development, so this experience was a treat! To make it even better...the developers and architects gave us the tour!! Yay! I loved every minute of it! Thank you Doors Open Baltimore and Terra Nova Ventures for an inside look at this property and its future plans!

Auckland's main station - under redevelopment

Looks like the wrecking ball will soon start swinging.

The building on the left is called Development House - a bland and unremarkable name that turned out to be a foreshadowing of its imminent fate. After its demolition, a new 10-storey office is due to take its place.

The photo was taken around 1985 on 35mm film.

The old station was demolished very quickly after closure, and the running lines placed in an excavated formation about 30 feet below the previous level., and continuing to Farringdon via Snow Hill tunnel, reopened about 2 years earlier.

At the top of the frame, the lines now pass under Ludgate Hill instead of over it on the former cast iron bridge.

The site was later built over. and became St Paul's Thameslink.

Work by Network Rail to redevelop Reading Station and the rail approaches continues to move forward. The 'ski jump' style roofs are part of the new station and the clock tower of the old part of the station is dwarfed by everything around it.

This photograph is of the back of the station and redevelopment of the front (the Station Hill side) will eventually lead to the demolition of Western Tower (the disused office building on the right) the shops below it and the old bus station.

The two projects together will cost around a billion pounds.
