This dragonfly is a valued predator. I found it in a padi field. It provides natural ecology to the environment: it typically eat mosquitoes, and other small insects like flies, bees, ants and butterflies that could be destroying the crop.

This red one kept zipping around me, landing on my toes, checking the color of my eyelashes, and eventually landed about a foot away from me on the dirt path... I am pretty sure we're in a relationship now.

Illinois Beach State Park Summer/Fall 2009

Red Dragonfly on a red flowering stalk of Croscomia "Lucifer" flower plant.

I am delightedly surprised to see this type and color of Dragonfly that I last saw half a world away, in tropical Bangladesh !!! Out of all places, in Newcastle, Washington (State) !!! At a Fruit & Produce & Nursery Stand, sitting on an also deep red blooming stalk of a Croscomia "Lucifer" flower plant !!! What a sight that was!!! At first I thought it was a lawn ornament, then it moved and flicked its wings! And I was like, "Oh my Gosh! IT IS REAL!" I ran back to my car to grab my camera and snapped a few pics. Here are a few. They are fun to watch.
