When visiting Japan one of the more pleasant insects you might see if you’re a bit lucky is the red dragonfly (aka tombo, 赤とんぼ).

Near the end of my 5 hour walk I found a field populated by halloween pennants, Celithemis eponina. Man they were hard to photograph. Notice the characteristic pink bars on the wingtips.

Red Dragonfly at Indian Canyons in Palm Springs. Do not know the exact name of this guy, just liked him. They always look like they are wearing a helmet.

DSC_7494_Edit: I have to admit it...I've become quite a bird watcher over the past year or so.

I have a particular liking for the Robins (or Rouge Gorge -- literally "Red Throat" -- as they're called in French) that are in our neighborhood this time of year.

This evening I was sitting out on our front lawn with our cat Elliott (who also likes to watch birds very much coincidentally -- like all cats), when our neighbors across the street started talking about a bird sitting in a nest in the crotch of a tree on their front lawn -- but they don't know different kinds of birds, so they weren't sure what kind it was.

I took a look and saw this little guy sitting in the nest quietly.

I came back a few minutes later with my Nikon gear and got this really close-up shot: probably one of the best Robin pictures I've taken.

I plan to go back in a week or so to see if he's still there and to see what kind of physical changes he's undergone as he's grown.

This red dragonfly is perched on the edge of a tomato leaf .... I wonder if it's noticed how long the drop to the ground is :)

A demo for a special effects video I've been working a bit on recently. Doing shooting, visual and sound effects. Part of a larger video I'm putting together with several sequences.

I started this several weeks ago and have been pecking away at it once in a while.

I have no idea when I'll be finished with this video, but thought I would post what I have so far.

I shot most of this back in the late winter when there was still snow on the ground, so what you see is real Lego standing in real snow shot outside.

More with 3D cubes and pyramids using some video plates that I made some time ago, but reused in a new kind of shape - what I call a digital snowflake. After all, it is Christmas time and it is snowing outside.

Music: Massive Attack: "Be thankful for what you've got".

I cranked this out in about 3 hours tonight, just eyeballing the geometry.

This is a picture of a red maple leaf seen on our lawn in mid-August 2010. Certainly a sign of things to come.

This was shot with HD Pentax-DA 35mm ltd macro on top of the Kiron 2X TC, so the actual aperture is 2 stops closer.

A rare insect shot from me!

DSC_6076: Caught this plane flying over our house, next to the crescent moon.

Spring 2003 in the Annapolis Valley, near Wolfville on my family's farm.

In this video you will hear many of the birds around the area.

Of note are the call of a male pheasant at 0:44

and near the end of the video you will see and hear one of my favorites that always reminds me of Spring. It is a male Bobolink.

This picture, I took in Jige Furusato Village, Aoba Ward, Yokohama, Japan.

Tugboats on the downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia waterfront on an unusually mild (+13C) January 13th.

Autumn Meadowhawk, Sympetrum vicinum, Male.

I went to one of my local ponds yesterday. I wasn't expecting to see much as the dragonfly activity there has as slowed down considerably. I sat for a bit and watched for movement. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something red camped out on a lily pad. It was so small that I thought it was a "new to me" damselfly. After a closer look I realized it was a small dragonfly. I was SO excited to see a red dragonfly, and a new species to me. Once I took a walk around the pond I saw them everywhere. I have never seen these dragonflies before and had no idea they were about to take over this pond. Apparently they are one of the last dragonflies to be seen in the fall...thus their name Autumn Meadowhawk. They were quite inquisitive and one even came over and landed on my arm. Unfortunately, I missed that photo op. The females are much harder to spot. I did see a few pairs mating but was unable to capture any shots.

"Formerly called Yellow-legged Meadowhawk.

Males are mostly red, lacking the black abdominal triangles of most of our other meadowhawks. Instead they have variable black markings laterally and dorsally on segments 8-10. Females are recognized by the prominent projecting subgenital plate. Contrary to the name, legs range from yellow to brown or even reddish.

The vagrant Saffron-winged Meadowhawk is quite similar and should be looked for."

I have always wanted to photograph a dragonfly, but they are hard to catch. I had never seen a red dragonfly, so was pretty excited when this one landed near our campsite. I was surprised that I was able to move around and capture several shots while he stayed still.

I'm glad I have an 18-300mm lens!! =)

This summer is really hot in Taiwan.

Even the dragonfly is trying to find the shadow to take a break.

La libèl·lula Crocothemis erythraea és típica d'aigües estancades. Els mascles d'aquesta espècie són vermellosos i les femelles més groguenques. L'exemplar de la foto, que és un mascle, va ser fotografiat prop de la platja del Serradal.

A special effects video dedicated to old of my all time favorite bands: The Police.

This took about 3 days to do, on and off. There are over 400 layers in this video to give the segment displays 100 pixels depth each.

Now that I've created these shapes I've got plans for them in other, future videos.

Video showing the great distance covered by the Minas Basin tide at Evangeline Beach, Nova Scotia when it comes in twice each day.

The Minas tides are part of the Bay of Fundy. The vertical distance between low tide and high tide is that of a 4 story building (40 feet or 12 metres).

The beginning of this video show time lapse video shot over 1 hour and sped up 10000%. The end of the video show the tide on another similar day when it was all the way into the breakwater.

The amount of water that pours through the Minas Channel between Cape Split (near Cape Blomidon in the distance) and Northern Nova Scotia is equal to that of all the rivers in the world running for 24 hours. As you might imagine, hydro power is of keen interest to developers.

Recently, an undersea turbine was installed in the Channel, but it only lasted for about a day and was greatly damaged.
