Haven't done this hike in a bit so I thought I'd post a shot of where "Gaphiker" comes from. Standing on Mt. Tammany overlooking Mt. Minsi, the Delaware River and I-80. I never tire of this view and do tend to post it a lot, I even have a dedicated album for them.

At 1,260 m (4,133 ft ft) MSL.

The mountain refuge is that little red house up there, on the left. It's a good walk from here, but after the refuge to the summit, it's up that ridge of rocks to the tourist peak.

Fitness and health.

Consider the risks of this sport.

First mountain refuge.

This is the route that goes up to Cerro López in Bariloche from "la panchería" in Circuito Chico. The path goes up the rocks on the side of Arroyo López, quickly gaining height and opening up to the first viewpoints with views of Cerro López, Cerro Llao Llao and Lake Nahuel Huapi. After crossing a sector with rocks, the path enters the forest until reaching the "first refuge" of Cerro López, also known as Refugio Roca Negra. Here I rested and enjoyed the views of the Llao Llao area before continuing towards the next refuge, Refugio López.

From Refugio Roca Negra, the trail continues up steeply through the forest until the trail becomes a slightly wider and flatter path, although it still has a slight slope. If you pay attention on the way up after the first refuge, you can see the red Refugio López further up the mountain.

After walking a little along this wider and flatter path, I crossed a stream and then the path continues uphill, more and more pronounced, until I reached the door of the refuge. Many choose to stay here to enjoy the views and eat something tasty, but I still wanted to continue climbing the mountain and it was not too late, I continued to the summit of Cerro López (Pico Turístico), notifying the refugee in advance, charging and respected the instructions she gave me.

It is best to make this climb from Refúgio López to Pico Turístico in good weather to enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramic views in all of Bariloche with a clear sky. If you want to reach Pico Turístico and not just Refugio López, it's important to start the day very early, even in the summer months! For everyone's safety, refugees usually don't let you up after noon.

Most hike during the day, but Refúgio López has beds for those who want to stay overnight, and also has a camping area outside the refuge with beautiful views of the hill. During the winter, Cerro López becomes a cross-country ski destination in Bariloche.

From this mountaineering refuge, moderate stone walls. The demanding part of this adventure begins. I will use my hands, body and feet.

The green is gone and the gray will come in.

At 1,780 m (5,643 ft) MSL.

From the López Hut I continued up to a small tarn “La Hoya” and a little further up to “Pico Turista” (2.080 m.a.s.l.). Be very careful on this section as there are lots of loose rocks and a fair amount of scrambling.

Round trip up to Pico Turista is roughly 3 hs. Check with the hut keeper for the trail conditions and only head up if you are experienced in this terrain. There are loose rocks and there may be snow even in summer which can cover the red markings. The first section up to “La Hoya “ is the most technical and is advisable to hire a Mountain Guide.

The way down is by the same trail, be careful with the junctions and identify features on the way up to recognize going down.

At 2,010 m (6,594 ft) MSL.

70 meters (229.65 ft) high to reach the summit and the hardest part.

It's the most difficult part, because I'm on a small hill. It is not a straight trail. Getting down this little stone hill is really challenging.

Amazing hike!

The last part to the summit is adventurous and sometimes I needed my hands to climb. If you are afraid of heights or not in good shape, I'd recommend to return at Refugio Lopez.

The path is very well marked.

You haven't seen the other side of the mountain yet. You will see the 360º only from the summit of Cerro López. You only saw 180º since the beginning of this series of photos (this album).

The views from anywhere along the summit ridge are spectacular. The northwest side of the ridge is dominated by Cerro Tronador with Volcan Osorno and Puntiagudo clearly visible in Chile in the distance. The southeast side of the ridge is dominated by Lago Nahuel Haupi, with Lago Moreno and Brazo Tristeza also present.

From the refugio, a steep trail continues uphill for another half hour to a small lake in the sector referred to as Hoya de Lopez.

This glacial water is used in mountain refuges and infinite pool.

Don't forget to bring your trekking poles.

This is the soft part of the trail. Follow the read & white dots. Look at the tree!

From the trailhead, the hike should take roughly two hours until meeting up with the auto road.

At 890 m (2,919 ft) MSL at the moment.

At 1,520 m (4,986 ft) MSL.

Always follow the red and white dots or red arrows. In this section of the trail it is easy to see the path marked by the footprints.

The descent from the top of that rock to where I am now is the hardest part. It should have a rope or steel cable.

And the return is the same. It's rock climbing. I used my hands, feet and body.

Follow the red & white dots or the red arrows.

Almost there.

My experience:

Tourist Peak Cerro Lopez 2080 m.s.n.m.

I haven't reached the summit yet.

Small Circuit Route - Roca Negra Refuge - Lopez Refuge 1.45 hours

Lopez Refuge - Tourist Peak 1.30 hours

In February and March the path is more accessible (there is no snow, no particular equipment is needed) and the path is well signposted; the steepest and most technical part is the first after the Lopez Refuge; from "la Hoya" up the path is always steep but easier and more fun!

It's worth it, very nice summit!

Fly Above an Enchanting Forest

Mount López is located in the Short Circuit. Colonia Suiza is located at the foot of Mount López towards the east, and Moreno and Nahuel Huapi lakes towards the north and northeast, respectively. It's summit is 2,075 meters (6810 feet) above sea level.

A 3-hour hike through a trail took me to Lopez hut where I found an excellent spot with everything I needed for food, beverages and registered my name.

On Mount López, I also got the chance to go on an incredible tour and reach two mountain lodges: López and Roca Negra. The ascent to all two of them started at the base of the mountain with a great trek through a sharp mountain path, amidst hundred-year-old coihues and tall lengas (White Oaks). The natural turns in the road provide great viewpoints that show the immensity of the great Nahuel Huapi National Park, with great views of the amazing lakes, islands, and mountains. I walked through the woods and the mountain. It's a medium-difficulty trek.

Route

25 km (15 miles) from Bariloche's Civic Center.

Duration

All day

Crossing the lake on the right, the trail continues steeply up to the col that is the pass to continue the trek to Laguna Negra.

From here, turn right and traverse the ridge up to Pico Turista.

It's not the summit yet.

There are 30 meters (98.42 ft) of height left to reach the summit, Pico Turista on your right.

You have to know what you are getting into.

Each mile is 1000 feet of elevation….the first two miles are tough. After about a mile I reached the first Refugio. One more mile got me to a flat but dull part along a road/path, then I started the elevation gain again for about a mile to the second Refugio.

After that it is all rock scramble.

Not scrambling over boulders, but loose rock or granite faces and crevices that are dangerous but fun.

I first reached a little pond (from which the Refugio gets it water supply), and then scrambled for the last 2 or 3 miles to the top.

The first peak is white and the views of the lakes are amazing.

I still had energy, and my legs complied, I went down the other side of this tower and up the second, black tower (Cerro Lopez) to reach the true end of this hike which afforded me a 360º view and is spectacular.

Just remember, you have to come back down… oy, the knees.

A great hike altogether but difficult and dangerous for sure at the rock scramble. Not for the faint of heart, and certainly not for those out of shape.

TIP: follow the red dots!!

Past the refugio is all rocks with some scrambling - view is worth it!

PS. You see refugio López and infinite pool in the corner on the left.

All year round

The peak Cerro Lopez is rewarding us with an amazing 360º viewpoint (incl Cerro Tronador, Osorno Volcano, Volcán Puntiagudo e Bariloche).

The video is narrated in Portuguese by me, as few people in my family and friends speak English. Sorry.

I narrate where I am and what I see from the summit.

The views from anywhere along the summit ridge are spectacular. The northwest side of the ridge is dominated by Cerro Tronador with Volcan Osorno and Puntiagudo clearly visible in Chile in the distance.

Steep, dusty, not too crowded, don’t under estimate, insane views from the summit. At this point in the summer there is not much snow remaining at top though I did have to cross two sections.

View from Mt. Tammany, NJ overlooking the Delaware River, I-80 and the Pennsylvania side of the Water Gap. I been trying to get back into hiking shape and enjoy this Fall view. I posted a shot from the first hike taken 14 October 2020 and have been waiting for a decent day to return. 27 October was pretty overcast but at least it wasn't wet. Fearful that it was pasted peak I hiked up and was treated to this spectacular view. Another gap hike for the Gaphiker!

4 December 2020 - As seen on my hike from the top of Mt. Tammany, NJ overlooking the Delaware River, I-80, Mt. Minsi and the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap. Overcast day with rain just a few hours away, saw a total of 6 people on the trail, 2 of them are in this shot. All in all a good day. Nine 20mm vertical image panorama stitched and processed in Photoshop.

I took advantage of this 10,1 km (6,275 miles) round trip trail near Bariloche, Rio Negro. Generally considered a challenging course, it takes an average of 6 hr 8 min to complete.

This is a very popular area for backpacking, camping and hiking, so you're likely to meet other people as you explore. I met few people.

The best time to do this trail is from November to April.

A beautiful day for a hike. I always take a couple of shots on the trail but I'm never really too happy with them, this one I liked. Best get the snow before it all melts with a stretch of warmer weather headed our way!

6 April 2021 - As seen on my hike from the top of Mt. Tammany, NJ overlooking the Delaware River, I-80, Mt. Minsi and the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap. Clear skies and many hikers in groups from 1-4, everyone was social distancing as appropriate but now zero masks to be seen, I didn't mind. All in all a good day. Ten 20mm vertical image panorama stitched and processed in Photoshop.

8 January 2021 - As seen on my hike from the top of Mt. Tammany, NJ overlooking the Delaware River, I-80, Mt. Minsi and the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap. Clear skies and only saw a few people, everyone now is wearing mask and social distancing as appropriate. All in all a good day. From the sublime to the Ridiculous.

What a crazy year so far but I remain hopeful and thankful for all the blessings I have. All the best and Happy Thanksgiving.

View from Mt. Tammany, NJ overlooking the Delaware River, I-80 and the Pennsylvania side of the Water Gap. Changed quite a bit from the last time I visited when the leaves were in peak color. When it's crowded with groups hiking, there's not much opportunity for conversation, it was much better this hike. It's also better hiking up, less folks mean you can set your pace and stick to it - 1.5 miles, 1100 ft. elevation gain in 51 minutes and no stops, I was happy. Another gap hike for the Gaphiker! I always recorded my hikes on my GPS and just checked out the file and it still works, I've done this hike over 150 times with the bulk in 2008-2011.

24 February 2021 - As seen on my hike from the top of Mt. Tammany, NJ overlooking the Delaware River, I-80, Mt. Minsi and the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap. Stunning perfect day with clear skies and temps in the 50's deg. F. Tough hike up with the hard pack snow softening up and feeling more like sand than frozen snow. Saw about a dozen people on the trail, all stopping to put on masks before passing, all in all a good day. Ten 20mm vertical image panorama stitched and processed in Photoshop.

This Image got shot by me during the a great Challenge for #SmileonSaturday called A Toch of Red. I choosed another one for it but this one is also worth to share with you. At least i guess so :) I enjoyed playing around with the contrast of a little red spot within the complete image. When i went to my local fresh food market that morning i bought as every week in this time of the year those berries. Wuppsss...there was the 2nd idea right in front of me. Some blackberries sourounding a little lonesome raspberry :)

Have a great smileful week :)
