After making a reputation with lighter-than-air craft, Thomas Scott Baldwin turned to heavier-than-air flying machines in 1909. In the spring of 1911, he began testing a new airplane. It was similar to the basic Curtiss pusher design that was becoming quite popular with builders by this time, but it was innovative in that it had steel-tube structural components. It was powered by a 60-horsepower Hall-Scott V-8. Baldwin called his new machine the Red Devil III.

gotta love the gearing on that bike. And I thought riding my 48x14 at the track made me a tough guy.

No. 3450 "Red Devil" began life as an SAR Class 25NC, 4-8-4 locomotive, which was built by Henschel in Germany, with a works no. 28769 in 1953.
The Class 25NC was the final main line steam design for South Africa. 50 of this type were built, plus 90 with condensing tenders, which were used on sections through the Karoo where water supplies were scarce.
Whilst the Condenser variety (Class 25) were successful, these sections of line were among the first to be electrified in South Africa. As the Class 25 were relatively new, most were rebuilt as conventional 25NC locomotives, although retaining the distinctively long framed tenders. These were the only really successful main line steam condensing locomotives anywhere worldwide. It was a Class 25NC, no. 3450 which was chosen for rebuilding in 1980 by engineer David Wardale, following the principles of Argentinian LD Porta, to increase steam efficiency. The result was the Class 26 - the ultimate in steam development and the most modern steam locomotive worldwide. This locomotive was able to produce over 3000 kW power, which was significantly greater than contemporary Class 34 diesel or Class 6E1 electric locomotives. The locomotive was painted bright red and was nicknamed the “RED DEVIL”.
Unfortunately, the locomotive is currently under repair.

Photos taken before the very rainy Marche du Nain Rouge event this past Sunday. A parade to drive away the Nain Rouge, an impish devil of a character, who has been wishing ill will to Detroit since it's founding in 1701. Me and my two Shutterbug Sisters, Kathy and Mary Jo, brave the rain and Nain Rouge.

Panama's stunning 'Diablo Rojo' buses are soon to be making their last runs.
The government is offering compensation (at the moment USD25,000 each) to owners and a new fleet of 420 modern square buses - known disparagingly here as neveras (refrigerators) - are soon to be ordered.
Panama's streets will be a less colourful place to be when the last Diablo Rojo has been removed!
A contact of mine is hoping to find buyers for at least a couple of the most spectacular buses!

NS DE3 "Rooie Duivel", 114, leads NS DE1 "Blauwe Engel", 41, through Geldermalsen. 114 has collected 41 from Blerick and was taking it to the Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht. I had no idea that these would pass through here and had stopped at Geldermalsen in the hope that some freight might pass here. No freight, but this more than made up for it.
