Minlaton –Barley Capital of the world.
Minlaton’s claim to fame is the above title but like other Yorke Peninsula towns it began in 1874 as a wheat growing area. Barley was a difficult crop to grow but after the general use of superphosphates from the 1890s more and more barley was grown, mainly as a fodder crop. From 1913 onwards prized malting barley was grown around Minlaton with great success. By the 1920s barley had replaced wheat as the dominant crop. Barley likes the higher humidity during the ripening stage which comes with the sea breezes of southern Yorke Peninsula. By the 1960s Yorke Peninsula was growing 75% of Australia’s barley crop. Minlaton is perhaps the barley capital of SA these days but it is not the barley capital of Australia! The Minlaton Information Centre is on Harvest Corner in the former barley store house which used to have an attached flour mill. Grain from this area was carted to Port Minlacowie.
The other attraction of Minlaton is the Captain Harry Butler memorial. Harry grew up in Minlaton and gained fame as a pilot in 1919 by carrying airmail from Minlaton to Adelaide. His Red Devil aeroplane was the first to cross the sea in SA. The plane was last flown in 1945. It had begun its life as a World War One fighter plane.
Photos taken before the very rainy Marche du Nain Rouge event this past Sunday. A parade to drive away the Nain Rouge, an impish devil of a character, who has been wishing ill will to Detroit since it's founding in 1701. Me and my two Shutterbug Sisters, Kathy and Mary Jo, brave the rain and Nain Rouge.

Panama's stunning 'Diablo Rojo' buses are soon to be making their last runs.
The government is offering compensation (at the moment USD25,000 each) to owners and a new fleet of 420 modern square buses - known disparagingly here as neveras (refrigerators) - are soon to be ordered.
Panama's streets will be a less colourful place to be when the last Diablo Rojo has been removed!
A contact of mine is hoping to find buyers for at least a couple of the most spectacular buses!
