African Bush Elephant (Loxodonta africana)

African elephants are the species of elephants in the genus Loxodonta, one of the two existing genera in Elephantidae. Although it is commonly believed that the genus was named by Georges Cuvier in 1825, Cuvier spelled it Loxodonte. An anonymous author romanized the spelling to Loxodonta and the ICZN recognizes this as the proper authority.

The African Bush Elephant is an intelligent animal. Experiments with reasoning and learning show that they are the smartest ungulates together with their Asian cousins. This is mostly due to their large brain.

Herds are made up of related females and their young, directed by the eldest female, called the matriarch. Infrequently, an adult male goes with them, but those usually leave the pack when reaching adolescence to form bachelor herds with other elephants of the same age. Later they lead a solitary life, approaching the female herds only during the mating season. Nevertheless, elephants do not get too far from their families and recognize them when re-encountered. Sometimes, several female herds can blend for a period of time, reaching even hundreds of individuals.

The matriarch is the one who decides the route and shows to each other member of the herd all the water sources she knows, which the rest will memorize in the future. The relations among the members of the herd is very tight; when a female gives birth to a baby the rest go to acknowledge it touching her with the trunk; and when an old elephant dies the rest of the herd will stay by the corpse for a while. The famous elephant graveyards are a myth, but it is true that these animals can recognize a carcass of its species when they find one during their trips, and even if it is a stranger, they form around it and sometimes they even touch its forehead with their trunk.

Mating happens when the female becomes receptive, an event that can occur anytime during the year. When she is ready, she starts emitting infrasounds that attract the males, sometimes from kilometers away. The adult males start arriving at the herd during the following days and begin fighting, causing some injuries and even broken tusks. The female shows her acceptance of the victor by rubbing her body against his. They mate, and then both go their own way. After 22 months of gestation (the longest among mammals), the female gives birth to a single 90 cm high calf which weighs more than 100 kg. The baby feeds on the mothers milk until the age of 5, but also eats solid food from as early as 6 months old. Just a few days after birth, the calf can follow the herd by foot.

Some African Bush Elephants will attack and kill rhinoceroses. This behavior, when it occurs, is mostly observed with younger adult male elephants who have come into musth prematurely.

African Bush Elephants are herbivorous. Their diet varies according to their habitat; elephants living in forests, partial deserts, and grasslands all eat different proportions of herbs and tree or shrubbery leaves. Elephants inhabiting the shores of Lake Kariba have been recorded eating underwater plant life. In order to break down the plants they consume, the African Bush Elephant has four large molars, two in each mandible of the jaw. Each of these molars is 10 cm wide and 30 cm long. Over time, these molars are worn away and new ones are grown to replace them as the elephant ages. Around the age of 15 their milk teeth are replaced by new ones that last until the age of 30, and then by another set which wear off past the age of 40, being replaced by the last set of teeth that last approximately until the age of 65–70. Not much later, the animal dies of starvation from not being able to feed correctly. There are known cases of over 80 year old specimens in captivity.

These animals typically ingest an average of 225 kg of vegetable matter daily, which is defecated without being fully digested. That, combined with the long distances that they can cover daily in search of more food, contributes notably to the dispersion of many plant seeds that germinate in the middle of a nutrient-filled feces mound. Elephants rip apart all kind of plants, and knock down trees with the tusks if they are not able to reach the tree leaves. In some national parks there is overpopulation, so that managers of overpopulated parks often contact other parks with fewer specimens to transfer excess individuals.

Elephants also drink great quantities of water, over 190 liters per day.

The Reasoning - a rock band from Cardiff on the heavy sde of prog that certainly woke up the Sunday lunchtime crowd at High Voltage

Who can argue with that reasoning? :)

A light in the distance is dim through the foggy night. Water surrounds the boundaries between here and there.

What is the emotion versus the choice of freedom?

What is the emotion of freedom?

What is freedom?

How does a person think? What do we realize versus percieve? How do our perceptions affect our emotions?

What comes from percieved emotions and how much control do we have over them? Can we create emotions? ;)

Do our thoughts develop how our emotions develop? How are we trained to think how we do?

Are we born with it, do our parents and family tree drop down the apples of thought response or are we shaped through our life? Is there a combination of the two?

An example:

Say a mother is a musician and the child becomes a musician; does the child have traits born made to be a success? Or does the stimulus from the mother as a musician influence after the child is born and raised? If a child of a musician is raised away from the mother and grows up around accountants, does the child still gain musical talent or not?

Potential. How does that work for us? For me?

I've got a couple of ideas after talking with Jes and storming our brains together. I have a loose plan that may just work in the next two years.

In my crazy plan, I may end up going to Los Angeles and of all things, auditioning for a character in Japan at Tokyo Disney. If we get picked up as characters, we'd be flown down to Tokyo and make some hefty money for six months. Once we get that, we could then get a store in Eureka Springs and sell our art and paintings! Wouldn't that be an incredible experience?

Well, Jes and I had a nice little day, we went to Wild Oats where Jes had this extreme sinus juice shot and a veggie drink. We also got some Dagoba chocolate bars. YUM. We then waltzed down to Gilcrease museum and its park for a walk, followed by tea at Cafe Cubana. Now, we're sitting at Panera and figuring out our lives. Snacks, tea and talk sounds great for me!

I'll write more later. adios.

The reasoning for my choice of using flowers as my texture that I personally believe it goes hand to hand with I was trying to achieve with the editing choices Iv'e made, example - the gradient mask of teal and pink and blending option of light soft to make the image dark but not to dark with the texture. Plus the flowers look like a pattern on my shirt.

I didn’t plan my 100th day to have such lovely universal symmetry, though I chose the dates of my travel for numerically perfect reasoning. I planned it so that I would spend my first day in Australia on what would have been my brother, Dan’s, thirty-sixth birthday.

This is the first photo I took today and it’s almost exactly the same as Day 4. One is Manhattan, the other Melbourne. One is dark and grainy, taken in the thick light of January morning. The second is full of the white light of April in the Southern Hemisphere. In the first, I am sad and afraid that I will never be in the same place again. My breath is held. In the second, I am still unsure of the future, but my optimism abounds.

All day long, I looked to the heavens and thanked him for bringing me here. For guiding me to this point in my life. It is lovely and painful to have and lose love - lovers, brothers, friends - and it is something that fills me with light.

Nothing in life is guaranteed except that it will eventually end and you can never know when or how. Nate always likes to tell me, “The only thing I have to do is stay black and die.”

One hundred days into this year and I have never been happier.

Thank you.

“Comfort me with stars, not apples,

For always the sky was my bright consoler.”

It’s been a fun week. Almost got canned. Got a “talking” to twice in one day last week. Once from my new supervisor. The other from a REGIONAL Ops. Manager that was here helping while ours was out.

Apparently my internet usage is being monitored. They have also noticed my lack of motivation & un-happiness. I told them the truth. I am not motivated. I am not happy. I TRIED to explain my reasoning, but they did not “hear” me. They listened, but none of it seemed to make a difference to them. She wants me to start doing all the duties that they just took from me and gave to someone else that recently started. I also, explained that to them. They didn’t care.

She wants me to make my position my specialty. My baby.

IT HAS BEEN!!! For TWO years!!

“Anyone who has a question on this should think of you first to be, ‘The one to go to’”.

THEY DO ALREADY!!!

“You made this really great Spreadsheet/checklist, you have potential”

You have NO IDEA!!! WOOHOO!! A FUCKING CHECKLIST!! I FEEL SPECIAL!!! I was just trying to keep myself from having to correct too many screw-up’s from other’s work. At least once a day I hear someone say to me, “What would we do without you!?” I guess the answer is, “You would wait AT LEAST four hours for a call back from the retards at the helpdesk, you would have to wait for someone else to figure out the answer to something you probably should have know to begin with. All in all, you’d be FUCKED!!”

How am I supposed to be motivated when I have HAD TO move my damn cubicle over ten times in two years??!! Only one person here comes close to having that many moves…I started before her btw, she gets to move up and onward. Not me. Otherwise I would be fine with it. I didn’t get my 30 cent raise this year. You want me to take initiative?? You want me to be happy that my previous “Supervisor” still managed to fuck me over months AFTER he left for my raise this year??? You want me to be motivated to do things when I have been given a boat load of shit to do and then you dwindle my responsibilities down to nothing?? You want me to be motivated to do OTHER’S jobs?? Isn’t that what I have a job title for??? It’s not OB!!! But that’s not being a “Team Player”…

In the past, I have been given so much to handle that I have been busy every second of the day, told that they are going to “re-adjust” the work load, which never happened…well I guess it did, they took me completely off that with no warning. No, “Hey you need to improve on this.” Or, “You’re not doing that up to our standards.” Just, “Did you hear??” Yeah I no longer have this one or two people to take care of…then suddenly the next day the revised list comes out & instead of the revision I was expecting, they revised it to not include me at all!!! “Oh, well we are moving you back to doing this. And by the way, your going to have to move your cube again.” FREGGIN SWEET!!! Glad I didn’t respond to all on that email saying, “My name isn’t Robert”. Give me something!! Why am I the only one you jack around like this??

Head this up with no feedback…Oh your going to be doing this from now on….No wait, now your doing this. Here’s barely anything to do. Motivates me SOOO much. I wonder what I will be doing next month??? Maybe it will be back to everything cause right now they have me doing nothing….then a few more months it will be right back to nothing. I used to love my job. Used to….

I HATE being OB!!!!!

So your’s truly will not be here nearly as much as I used to. I am going through withdraws!!!! I can access Flickr on my phone but have no access to groups or flickrmail. So I will be there every once and awhile, but it just sucks that way. I guess I will have to make myself ANOTHER new computer fund.

If you are marked as a friend, you can view my email address through my profile. Till then….

Grammar and Philology (the love of learning & literature) are at the service of theological learning, but so increasingly is logic, namely that discipline that studies the "functioning" of human reasoning, so that the truth of a proposition seems evident. Today, one is struck by the order, clarity, logical connection of the arguments, and of the depth of some of the intuitions (or impressions) is a precise meaning and, between believing and understanding, there is established a reciprocal (or mutual) movement of clarification.. stimulates us to be always ready to answer anyone asking for the reason for the hope that is in us. To take the questions as directed to us and thus be capable also of giving an answer. It reminds us that there is between faith and reason a natural friendship, founded on the order of creation itself.

"Faith and reason are like the two wings, with which the human spirit soars towards contemplation of the truth." Faith is open to the effort of understanding on the part of reason; reason, in turn, recognizes that faith does not mortify (diminish or distracts) it, rather it drives it toward wider and loftier horizons..

Faith and reason, in reciprocal dialogue, vibrate with joy when both are animated by the search for profound union with God. When love vivifies the prayerful dimension of theology, knowledge, acquired by reason, is broadened. Truth is sought with humility, received with wonder and gratitude: In a word, knowledge grows only if it loves truth. Love becomes intelligence and theology the authentic wisdom of the heart, which orients and sustains the faith and life of believers. Let us pray, therefore, that the path of knowledge and of deepening in the mysteries of God is always illumined by divine love.\

My grandfather squatting in front, after promotion to WO in July 1937.

As Senate majority leader, Lyndon Johnson became the most effective legislative leader of his time. Johnson believed that finding the middle ground was the essence of legislative leadership. Referring to one of his father's favorite passages from the Bible, he would say to a Senator, "Come now, let us reason together. . . ." which is an excerpt from the Bible verse Isaiah 1:18.

After he became president, Johnson continued to use his skills as a master legislator. One of the most important laws he pushed through Congress was the Voting Rights Act of 1965. President Obama's election in 2008 was really the culmination of a push that had its origins in that Voting Rights Act.

The full verse from the Bible is:

""Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool."

After much deliberation, Nathan finally settled on the Big Gulp. It's hard to argue with his reasoning. It is almost always better to have too much rather than too little.

Whatever is consistent with right objective reasoning should be accepted even if it comes from a boy or a parrot, and whatever is not, should be rejected even if it comes from an old man or the great sage Śrī Śuka himself.

=====================================

The mess in India is because most activist-leaders are sponsored by wealthy individuals, MNC-owners , Missionaries and super-corporates of India. eg The Anna and Chhote Anne are sponsored by Jindal and MNC-owners and Missionaries pay mediamen to give them coverage. MNC-owners pay ToI, India Today to give coverage Subramanian Swamy and MNC-owners also pay Supreme judges to give favorable judgment on Subramanian Swamy's PILs.

Due to funding and publicity, these activist leaders have become immensely popular.

Now to retain elite-support, these leaders refuse to support good laws. eg The Anna, The Chhote Anne, Subramanian Swamy etc all oppose wealth tax, Jury System, giving Mineral Royalties to citizens, Right to Recall Janlokpal, RTR PM, RTR Supreme Court judges etc. When activists ask them to support these good laws, the activist leaders start beating drum "unity", "timing" and ask middle layer to beat drums of leader worshiping.

IOW, all this leader worshiping is to crush the activists ' key question "why our leader ism opposing these good law-draft proposals".

=========

The leader worshiping cult in India was first started by Duratma Gandhi. He deliberately wore saint like clothes, so that he middile layers of activists can call him as a Super Saint, and thus evade all questions on his bakwaas. Today, we see leader worshiping in all activist groups

I use my trike (and another recumbent bike) as my primary transport. The trike is my utility vehicle that I use for hauling groceries, 5 gallon water containers--and even a fridge (see photo). It has 192 speeds so it can haul any weight up any hill with ease. Once one gets use to biking/triking for their transportation needs, cars look silly for general transportation needs. A 15-mile radius around your house can be done easily and a 30-mile radius if time permits (time, more than energy, being the issue.) I have biked in all weather conditions, but most of the time extremes can be worked around.

The intention of this course series seeks to provide an insight into classical Aristotelian logic in order to strengthen critical reasoning/rhetoric skills amongst the activist community. This course allowed for individuals to better represent themselves and the struggles they support in interviews, and will better allow for participants to hold-their-own in media interviews and in conversation amongst detractors from causes actively supported by Peace House/Affiliates.

Each course will be structured into a two-hour block containing two parts: theory and application. The first hour will contain teachings from varying works of antiquity, from Aristotle's Logic to the Socratic dialogues and orations from Cicero & other distinguished rhetoricians. From here, theoretical knowledge will be applied in addressing/critiquing potent arguments through the history of philosophy, from Descartes Cogito Ergo Sum to Immanuel Kant's metaphysical theory. The second one-hour block will deal with the application of technique acquired in the aforementioned block. Through consensus, we will decide which topic those in attendance would like to address, and will allow for a demonstration of informal logic and constructive criticism relative to the presentation of said argument (Note: if it is felt that there should be scheduled topics by course attendees, methodology for topic selection is subject to change).

-Presentation One: Introduction to Logic/Rhetoric: Presentation One will address one-third of Aristotle's triangle-of-rhetoric: Logos

1) Layman's Logic vs. Logic as a Math/theoretical science (If everyone has opinions and they're all equally valid, why does debate exist?) -This section will cover the distinction between logic and Logic, as well as an introduction to the syllogistic form/ overview of the structure of argument.
