Really early in the year for fungi to appear - is it edible?

Right now there is a Golden Orb in my back yard I call “My Friend”. She is really large and I have been getting my face very close taking these photos with the Canon S3 IS. I am happy with the results. This spider is more than 8 inches across (around 215 mm) counting its legs. Some information about this weaver spider:-

Golden-Orb Spider (Nephila pilipes)

The family of Orb-Weaver Spiders is unusual in showing a marked size difference between the two sexes. The bodies of the males are only 6mm long but the females are giants, with bodies up to 60mm long and leg-spans reaching 200mm or more. The female can be 600 times bigger than the male. Populations living further from the equator tend to be smaller, possibly because of the shorter growing season.

The females build large webs, in open areas often high in forests. The web is a vertical oval made up of a golden spiral bridged by colourless radiating threads; the oval is suspended by colourless threads from the surrounding vegetation (or structures) which may be meters away.

These spiders eat flies, beetles, butterflies and other flying insects that become ensnared in their webs. Leftovers of meals, such as the exoskeletons (skins) of insects are left hanging in the web (and are visible in the photograph).

E.J. Banfield, a naturalist who lived on Dunk Island in Queensland, wrote in 1918 about indigenous people using these webs for fishing. “The end of a stick was twisted in the web to attach the web to it, then the stick was waved about to spin the web into a single line about a metre long. The spider was squashed onto the end of the line and trailed in the water. Fish that attacked the bait became attached by their mouths and were taken. The breaking strain of the line was estimated at about 0.3kg but this was of no real consequence because the fish that were being caught were only about 4cm long. However, the method was successful enough to yield 17 fish in 10 minutes of observation.”

Spider silk is highly elastic and very strong for its weight. Different types of silk are exuded from different glands in the abdomen. In the web of the Golden-Orb Spider, the golden spiral is sticky but other threads are not. Silk is exuded as a liquid but quickly solidifies, remaining highly elastic and very strong for its weight. Because of these unique properties, many laboratories are working on production of this silk by genetic engineering.

Reproduction in the Orb-Weaver Spiders is not a straightforward affair. The web is occupied by a single female and several hopeful males. Although it might not be true of Nephila pilipes, in the related species, Nephila plumipes, 60% of males are eaten during or after sex! It appears that the larger males are more likely to be eaten, which probably explains their small size. However, males that have been eaten generally have copulated for longer, so that more of their sperm fertilize eggs. These males leave more offspring, passing on more genes into the next generation and contributing to their biological success.

In Nephila fenestrata, some males copulate with females that are preoccupied with feeding. These males are even more successful because they have long copulations while the female is eating, thereby transferring more sperm. Not only this, but they survive the event to defend the female from fertilization by other males as well as having the opportunity to mate again!

The female digs a pit in the ground into which she deposits the fluffy yellow egg sac and covers it with soil and leaves. After hatching, the spiderlings quickly make their way up trees and other structures.

This species was first described by the Danish entomologist, Johan Fabricius, in 1793. A pupil of Linnaeus, the Swedish scientist who devised the basis of modern biological classification, Fabricius went on to become a professor at the University of Kiel (which was in Denmark at that time), publishing several important works on insects.

The Golden-Orb Spider is found in the northern parts of Australia as well as in South-East Asia and in the Papua-New Guinea region.

Really like how this turned out! She has beautiful eyes :D

Have you ever brought one dish to a potluck and gone away with a full belly and a balanced meal? everyone brings and goes away with more. We all have skills, ideas, objects, smiles, talents, friendships, discussions and many other things to share. If we bring them together at the REALLY FREE MARKET, we can provide more balanced and full lives for us all.

As noted before, we journeyed up to the magnificent Canadian Rockies, and were lucky enough to hike through both Yoho and Banff National parks. The views from all parts were stunning. Because the water is glacial water, the 'flour' colors the water a characteristic turquoise. The clouds were ever present, but didn't get in the way of looking for images. Thanks to those who keep inspiring us - we all keep trudging along trying to capture some wonderful memories.

I really had fun to do this theme ! This picture represents how the war can be painful, and that we can live without this, and it is so easy to walk, to forget and forgive, and to make peace, and to love. On this picture, we can see fighters who died, and Lee who survived, because she loved and made the peace with the world, forgetting all the pain.

Talking about love, I would like to dedicate this picture to the people who has a big place in myn heart. My family, my friends, and you guyz :)

I would love to dedicate this picture to my family for all the support and the patience that they have for me. I know I'm not easy with them, and I'm really thankful that they are always there for me, even with my teen attitude. I try to do the peace with them, and to do not look behind me, as Lee does. I feel really good that they care about me and what I do. My mom watches almost each episodes of the BNTMs that I joined, the same thing for the pictures that I do. Even if sometimes I say that you break my life, mommy, I love you <3

I would also like to dedicate this picture to my friends, for all the love and the complicity that I have with them. Thanks for being a part of my life, for the laughs and the tears. An enormous thank you to Flora, who discovered me this beautiful word who became my passion, that we can also live togheter. I love you Flora <3

Finally, I would like to dedicate this pic to you, guyz. All around the world. It's because of you that I am still on Flickr, doing pictures and improving so badly as I do. Why everything that I dreamed became true is because of you guyz. Thank you for appreciating and supporting what I do. Thank for loving me for who I am. I really feel I can be myself. You guyz are freaky awesome. Thank you so much people for changing my life ever.

I forgot to dedicate this picture to everyone around the world who misses love and peace. Who misses hoping and dreams, and that they think dreams can't come true. If you are one of these persons, trust me, they can come true. A dream became true for me. I was sure that I'll never be able to stay on Flickr, and doing great pictures. Well, I continued. I also thought Bratz Next Music Top Model will get the success that it got. I am giving a big hug to everyone around the world who misses love, peace, hopes and dreams. Everything is possible.

Peace

First I tried dressing him in drag, but that didn't help the poor little fella' ... then I thought perhaps some wings & a crown would uplift his self-esteem a little; but somehow I doubt it.

Apparently this is a sculpture of a man riding a horse*.

A new arrival in one of the small squares along Victoria Street, it is by Nick Hornby, and apparently inspired by the many statues of men on horseback that can be seen around Westminster.

I remember taking a series of photos of horse sculptures a while ago - so it is good to be able to add the hashtag #horsesnearmyoffice to a new one!

See next photo for proof! (it is all about where you stand to look at it)

If you thought those bridges were low, think again. This one takes the cake. Amidst my fascination with things around me, the wind blowing in my ears and the loud noise of the boat's engine, my driver-guide (who was seated behind me) told me something about this being a local access to something nearby, and can be used by pedestrians and bicycles (at the most two wheelers) only etc. It was too low for boats to sail under. (May/ June 2011)

This is really a lens I love. We all know that with a wide/angle lens you get no or not much bokey at all. You have to be really close. Even at a 30cm distance with this lens, there isn't much bokey. But it's an M42 so I can use the helicoid adapter. Now a distance of only 10cm is possible. And that's where the magic happens. OMG what a wonderful world you step into.

Be it any trade or proffession. The common thing that binds all, is the need to catchup on the happening in and around you.

This boy delivers it HOT.......

To quote David Byrne.. how do I work this? I looked in and laughed, had to shoot it as a joke, just for the boards.. and I usually shoot a self portrait at my shoots - do you? It's a great idea ;-)

I have one life and one chance to make it count for something . . . I'm free to choose what that something is, and the something I've chosen is my faith. Now, my faith goes beyond theology and religion and requires considerable work and effort. My faith demands -- this is not optional -- my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can with whatever I have to try to make a difference.~Jimmy Carter

I really didn't spend a whole lot of time at TBG-it was steaming hot,and we were in a bit of a hurry. I don't recall ever seeing this scene. This photo, however, is from the 1950s

Really, titanic!

I really freaking love playing with eyeshadow!!! It's wayyyyy too much fun. On a second thought though, I really wish I wore something instead of going topless. Damn. Ah well.

Today while I was with my bff Juliana, who has started to call me Zoltar [I love it!], we went into this little store, and I saw this dress that I really wanted to buy, not for a costume, but to actually wear while out, and I caught myself thinking, ah but I don't wear dresses anymore. Then I said, wait... fuck that. Why not? If I like it, think I'd look good in it, and dare I say... comfortable in it? Then fuck yeah, I'm gonna get it. It has been maybe hmm 5-6 months since I've worn a dress while out, and I honestly haven't had much of a desire to wear a dress but recently I've been thinking about it more, so I shall. I always worry that people would misinterpret me and my gender identity if I do this or that but I am over that. I am just going to do whatever the hell I want to do, and people can think whatever they want... funny thing is that for a split second as soon as I decided I'm going to start wearing dresses again whenever the urge hits, was that oh but I'm so hairy now? Then I scoffed, I'm gonna be a proud hairy beast in a dress, tight sports bra, and boots. That's what! Ha.

Now I'm going to have a shower because my eyes kinda hurt... and have a real meal, the jelly beans just won't do.

really! ...visitor from intergalactic garden...

Kelleigh brushing her hair inside of an ice cream parlor. Notable because her hair is frigging long.

This Humpback came real close to our boat when Huguette took this shot with the G9 while I was filming with the other camera (see video later in this set).

This is about as much of the body of the whale as we were able to see on this tour. There was no breaching (leap out of the water) as we often see in magazines and publicity pamphlets. But Humpbacks are very energetic and do breach frequently, but mostly in agitated water and rarely when surface conditions are calm as they were in this instance. Well, can't have everything! I think that we were lucky enough to see them as close as we did! They're marvellous animals whether they are breaching or just lying motionless at the surface.

this is really old, but i never posted it. it was a total half-assed photo shoot for CMJ, where i had about 20 minutes on the roof of their offices in 4pm august afternoon sun. no lighting gear other than my on-camera flash. not my best work ever. but it's a cover. my only cover, actually. i don't feel that terrible about it because they don't pay their photogs anymore and i told them straight up that photo shoots are not my strength. but since they weren't paying me, i figured, well, sometimes you get what you pay for. they did give me a badge for the marathon that year, though.
