"Everybody knows the destiny of Henry VIII's six wives: divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived. But behind the familiar story, lies a far more complex truth: the extraordinary untold tales of the other women Henry loved but never married, the mistresses who became queens..."
A little dry, a little jumbled...but full of interesting information. Really drives home the point that much of what we think we know about Henry's love life (and love children!) is mostly based on speculation and rumor.
"The Plantagenets transports readers to the era of chivalry and the Crusades, the Black Death and the Hundred Years War. The first Plantagenet king inherited a broken, bloodsoaked realm from the Normans and transformed it into an empire that would stretch at its peak from Scotland to Jerusalem. His descendants and their fiery queens, including Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, Edward II, and King John, shaped England into the country we recognize today and gave it many of the laws, contracts, and bodies of governancelike Parliament and the Magna Cartathat would shape our own nation. The Plantagenets will appeal to fans of Game of Thrones , as well as to anyone who has curled up with a history of Henry VIII or Queen Elizabeth and marveled at the cunning, the treachery, and the seductiveness of England’s most illustrious monarchs."
A great deal of information is crammed into this book and it is well worth reading if you have any interest in the Plantagenet dynasty.
Secret History -- "In sixth-century Constantinople, one woman, Theodora, defied every convention and all the odds and rose from common theater tart to empress of a great kingdom, the most powerful woman the Roman Empire would ever know. The woman whose image was later immortalized in glittering mosaic was a scrappy, clever, conniving, flesh-and-blood woman full of sensuality and spirit whose real story is as surprising as any ever told….
After her father dies suddenly, Theodora and her sisters face starvation and a life on the streets. Determined to survive, Theodora makes a living any way she can—first on her back with every man who will have her, then on the stage in a scandalous dramatization of her own invention. When her daring performance grants her a backdoor entry into the halls of power, she seizes the chance to win a wealthy protector—only to face heartbreak and betrayal.
Ever resilient, Theodora rises above such trials and, by a twist of fate, meets her most passionate admirer yet: the emperor’s nephew. She thrives as his confidant and courtesan, but many challenges lie ahead. For one day this man will hand her a crown. And all the empire will wonder—is she bold enough, shrewd enough, and strong enough to keep it?" -- from www.amazon.com
A nice novel, interesting read...not spectacular, but decent.

Legends and Stories... -- "Legends and Stories of the Finger Lakes Region contains twenty-one legends – three on each of seven topics: lake legends, evil legends, geographical legends, ethereal legends, Native American legends, destiny legends, and self-sacrifice legends. The book also contains seventy-six stories about the area -- narratives of serpents/strange tales, travails/tragedies, ordinary stories/ observations, romance/rivalries, inventions/ideas, eclectic/extraordinary stories, and sources/sites." -- from www.heronsbendproductions.com
Some stories I liked and some I didn't...the writing style was very dry and boring...and some of the stories didn't seem as though they belonged.

25 Book Challenge 2012 Book #35
"An innocent pawn A kingdom without a king A new dynasty will reign… 1415. The jewel in the French crown, Katherine de Valois, is waiting under lock and key for King Henry V. While he's been slaughtering her kinsmen in Agincourt, Katherine has been praying for marriage to save her from her misery. But the brutal king wants her crown, not her innocent love. For Katherine, England is a lion's den of greed, avarice and mistrust. And when she is widowed at twenty-one, she becomes a prize ripe for the taking—her young son the future monarch, her hand in marriage worth a kingdom. This is a deadly political game, one the dowager queen must learn fast. The players—the Duke of Gloucester, Edmund Beaufort and Owen Tudor—are circling. Who will have her? Who will ruin her? This is the story of Katherine de Valois."
A good book but sometimes more like a romance novel than historical fiction. Frankly I prefer Vanora Bennett's book on Katherine de Valois much better.

In 2010 I learned how to drive. In 2011 I learned how to sew (and completed my goal of reading 200 {mostly children's} books).
In 2012 I should probably learn a less sedentary skill.

After The Falls -- "In this follow-up to Gildiner’s first memoir, Too Close to the Falls (2001), she details the family’s move from small-town Lewiston, New York, to a Buffalo suburb. Used to working side-by-side with her father in the family pharmacy from the age of four, she now must refocus her considerable energy into fitting in with her peers. But once she conquers the clique of popular girls, which takes her little more than two months, she moves on to land a job in a gritty, working-class doughnut shop, which she almost burns to the ground. The second half of her memoir deals with her experiences at Ohio State University, where she enters into a romance with a black football player and becomes involved in civil rights work, which leads to a frightening encounter with the FBI. Her relationship with her father, once so close, becomes frayed until she realizes he is suffering from a severe health issue that requires her help." -- from www.amazon.com
I read her first memoir "Too Close to the Falls" a few years ago and really liked it...I'm from Buffalo and I went to college just outside the city of Niagara Falls so a lot of the places she talks about are familiar to me. Her first book was very funny and interesting, this second book is more serious and sad, especially when she writes about the family's financial problems and her father's illness.

"Joan of Kent, renowned beauty and cousin to King Edward III, is destined for a politically strategic marriage. As the king begins a long dynastic struggle to claim the crown of France, plunging England into the Hundred Years’ War, he negotiates her betrothal to a potential ally and heir of a powerful lordship.
But Joan, haunted by nightmares of her father’s execution at the hands of her treacherous royal kin, fears the king’s selection and is not resigned to her fate. She secretly pledges herself to one of the king’s own knights, one who has become a trusted friend and protector. Now she must defend her vow as the king—furious at Joan’s defiance—prepares to marry her off to another man."
I really enjoyed this book. It was well-researched and written, very interesting and engaging. Very consistent with her other novel about this period, "The King's Mistress". The two books read almost as two parts of the same story rather than separate novels.
"Deep in the ocean, in a world not so different from our own, live the merpeople. Their communities are spread throughout the oceans, seas, and freshwaters all over the globe. When Serafina, a mermaid of the Mediterranean Sea, awakens on the morning of her betrothal, her biggest worry should be winning the love of handsome Prince Mahdi. And yet Sera finds herself haunted by strange dreams that foretell the return of an ancient evil. Her dark premonitions are confirmed when an assassin's arrow poisons Sera's mother. Now, Serafina must embark on a quest to find the assassin's master and prevent a war between the Mer nations. Led only by her shadowy dreams, Sera searches for five other mermaid heroines who are scattered across the six seas. Together, they will form an unbreakable bond of sisterhood and uncover a conspiracy that threatens their world's very existence."
A fun and interesting story. Handles merpeople without being too comic or "Disney-ish". Looking forward to the next book in the series.
"Emily Braden couldn't resist the invitation to join her charming but unreliable cousin, Harry, on a visit to the town of Chinon-where, according to legend, Queen Isabelle hid her treasured jewels during a seige in the 13th century. But when Harry vanishes and Emily begins to search for him, she uncovers the mystery of a different Isabelle. A mystery that dates back to the German occupation during the Second World War. As Emily explores the city, with its labyrinthine tunnels and ancient history, she's drawn ever closer to the mysterious Isabelles and their long-kept secrets"
Wonderful book...loved it. Lots of history, a good mystery, interesting characters.
The Winter Sea -- "In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown.
Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next bestselling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write.
But when she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction, Carrie wonders if she might be dealing with ancestral memory, making her the only living person who knows the truth-the ultimate betrayal-that happened all those years ago, and that knowledge comes very close to destroying her..." -- from www.amazon.com

The American Heiress -- "Be careful what you wish for. Traveling abroad with her mother at the turn of the twentieth century to seek a titled husband, beautiful, vivacious Cora Cash, whose family mansion in Newport dwarfs the Vanderbilts’, suddenly finds herself Duchess of Wareham, married to Ivo, the most eligible bachelor in England. Nothing is quite as it seems, however: Ivo is withdrawn and secretive, and the English social scene is full of traps and betrayals. Money, Cora soon learns, cannot buy everything, as she must decide what is truly worth the price in her life and her marriage." -- from www.amazon.com
An interesting novel...I had the urge to slap a few of the main characters for their actions but the writing was good and the ending a little bit unexpected...all in all, a pretty good read.

The King Must Die -- "The story of the mythical hero Theseus, slayer of monsters, abductor of princesses and king of Athens. He emerges from these pages as a clearly defined personality; brave, aggressive and quick. The core of the story is Theseus' Cretan adventure." -- from www.goodreads.com
This was a great book...very dense -- a great deal of story packed into one novel -- but wonderful to read. Renault is a very good researcher and a great writer.

"The Boleyn Reckoning heralds the triumphant conclusion of Laura Andersen’s enthralling trilogy about the Tudor king who never was: the son of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn—Henry IX—who, along with his sisters and those he holds most dear, approaches a dangerous crossroads. The Tudor royal family has barely survived a disastrous winter. Now English ships and soldiers prepare for the threat of invasion. But William Tudor—known as Henry IX—has his own personal battles to attend to. He still burns for Minuette, his longtime friend, but she has married William’s trusted advisor, Dominic, in secret—an act of betrayal that puts both their lives in danger. Princess Elizabeth, concerned over her brother’s erratic, vengeful behavior, imperils her own life by assembling a shadow court in an effort to protect England. With war on the horizon, Elizabeth must decide where her duty lies: with her brother or her country. Her choice could forever change the course of history."
A nice ending to this series. It was definitely interesting to see the twists and turns the story took over the course of three novels, and the ending was certainly realistic and just.
