Adobe Reader stinks. Evidently, it renders images in PDF files by hiring an arthritic gnome to redraw them with a quill pen. (I'm referring to the quavery variable thickness of the black edge lines.)
I won't even start about color consistency or drop shadow glitches.
Basically, it's the Internet Explorer of PDF viewers.
Dublin's sixth annual Readers' Day took place in the Civic Offices on 6th October. The event brings readers and writers together. Over 200 readers from book clubs attached to Dublin City Libraries attended, and they discussed a range of issues with well-known writers. Among them was Louis de Bernières, the acclaimed author of 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin'. He spoke about the impact writing the book has had on his life. Carlo Gebler, Adrienne Dines, Gerald Dawe and Ailbhe Smith asked whether female authors write too many dull novels about domestic life. A fascinating discussion followed.
According to Divisional Librarian Jane Alger, "supporting book clubs is an important activity of Dublin City Libraries. Nearly 100 book clubs are currently supported through provision of books, information about new publications and reading-related events such as author visits. The main benefit is to introduce readers to books they would not normally read and enable discussion on the various topics in a social environment".

Actually, I was looking for an Amazon Kindle but the device would be useless in Europe as the "download" of items cannot be accomplished using a computer. The Kindle uses CDMA (Europe uses mostly GSM) wireless technology to distribute daily newspaper and book downloads.
The Sony Reader is a great gadget too, providing an almost identical functionality using e-ink technology! However, the Sony device reminds me of using a Gameboy in the old days. Flipping a page from a PDF, Word document or e-book takes noticeable time to refresh the screen and the usability is pretty low. I am now waiting for the Xbox 360 edition of the reader :)
The first test in the long flight over the Atlantic proved the Sony Reader to be the ultimate travel reading companion. No heavy books hauling if you like to read more than one at the same time, no dog-ears on the book, no tedious deposition technique necessary in the tight perch.

6:15 pm, 13 June, Detroit Bridge, Salford Quays. She and her friend were on their way, as we were, to Opera North's Das Rheingold. at the Lowry, which is visible as a cylindrical tower in the left background. (The tower of the Imperial War Museum is visible behind it). She is reading 'My Guide to Manchester' by Jonathan Schofield, which she had just bought; he is a well-known and wonderfully opinionated expert on local architecture. I think she was reading about Salford Quays. She is on Detroit Bridge, an old railway swing bridge moved to this position as the quays were redeveloped. My apologies for not getting in more of the bridge.
Thank you for participating in my project, and apologies for interrupting your reading. Other photos in my series of readers are here: www.flickr.com/photos/greg_myers/albums/72157652125931010.
