Readers who regard H. G. Wells as strictly a writer of science fiction are sadly mistaken. This volume collects the best of H. G. Wells’ horror tales, including chillers about monsters (“The Strange Orchid,” “The Sea Raiders,” and “In the Avu Observatory”), black magic (“Pollock and the Porroh Man”), the supernatural (“The Plattner Story”) and some that are just plain creepy (“The Apple,” “The Red Room,” and “The Story of the Late Mr. Elvesham”).
Ottawa volunteers raise funds for Canwest Raise-a-Reader, a national campaign that promotes local literacy programs and increases awareness about the importance of encouraging family literacy.
Actually, I was looking for an Amazon Kindle but the device would be useless in Europe as the "download" of items cannot be accomplished using a computer. The Kindle uses CDMA (Europe uses mostly GSM) wireless technology to distribute daily newspaper and book downloads.
The Sony Reader is a great gadget too, providing an almost identical functionality using e-ink technology! However, the Sony device reminds me of using a Gameboy in the old days. Flipping a page from a PDF, Word document or e-book takes noticeable time to refresh the screen and the usability is pretty low. I am now waiting for the Xbox 360 edition of the reader :)
The first test in the long flight over the Atlantic proved the Sony Reader to be the ultimate travel reading companion. No heavy books hauling if you like to read more than one at the same time, no dog-ears on the book, no tedious deposition technique necessary in the tight perch.

OK, keen reader Neville Williams has
just raised the bar. Instead of sending us
his ‘They’re Reading Our Mag Where?
(TROMW?) pic or pics from one exotic
location he has chosen two, the first one
on a quiet street in Treviso, Italy where – he
tells us - near total silence was only broken
by the appropriately sweet sound of a passing
Ducati Monster, and the second half a
world (but less than 24 hours later) away on
a busy and noisy street in Shanghai, China.
Neville tells us that; ‘we tried to take a pic
of me sitting beside the pillar in the centre
of the road but we were instead lucky to
have crossed the road in one piece.’ He
also points out that motorcycles and scooters
are not permitted on Shanghai’s motorways...
and having seen first hand how the
locals drive he reckons he wouldn’t want to
ride one (on the motorway) anyway!
“Oh yeah, “ he adds, “and not a Mighty
Power Ranger in sight!”
I took this with my Nikon D5100 using a 50mm f1.8 lens. I apologize for the color, the color profiles we use strip a lot of the fun out of photographs.
I have to say, I was thinking of Curiosity when I staged this photo. Gottat love that Mars Rover!

The Customer Services Team hosted a short, lunchtime event at the library Wednesday, featuring Johnny Heller, an audiobook reader from Recorded Books. He gave lively readings from five books (including Iron Man, Marley & Me, and Dave Barry’s Complete Guide to Guys).
He and a Recorded Books representative also explained the research and production that goes into the making of audiobooks. “You have to read the book all the way through first and see how it ends,” Heller said. “It’d be awful for ALL of us to be surprised at the same time.” During that first reading, the narrator makes notes about characters (that will assist him with voices) and pronunciations (that company researchers correct or verify). The recordings themselves take place in studios above the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan. A 15 hour recording might take 30 hours to record in two- or three- hour segments.
Heller, by the way, is an in-demand, award-winning reader. More than 100 of his titles appear in our library’s catalog.

I went out on this amazing date last night and went to see Joyful Noise (really good by the way i recommend going to see it) and i had so much fun.
Now im going out with my friends and dance the night away
and there are so many things i wish i could tweak about this picture. but oh well i was in a hurry.

1 SB-900 unit in a softbox camera right, behind subject, providing rim light on the face. Second SB-900 bounced off umbrella with the intention of providing fill light on face, and showing some detail on the page of the book.
Metered through iTTL and triggered via CLS. Softbox light + 1 EV, second light -2 EV. Camera meter set to -0.6 EV. Played around with levels and contrast in Photoshop.
I like taking photographs on holiday, my girlfriend likes reading. Perfect..........
